Having spent half an hour on a packed tube being banged in the face by some woman's oversized handbag last night, I need to check if this is only me...

When you know you are going to travel by tube during peak, can you not take something smaller?? I mean really, what do some people carry in their handbags?! I'm convinced it must be said baby elephant, because no amount of make-up can need a carrier that size.

So, AIBU to demand expect people to either carry something smaller if you know you're very likely going to be crammed in during your commute, or at the very least drop it to your feet (which I sometimes do if I have a bigger bag / backpack with me) so as not to assault others? Huge bags over your shoulder means huge bags in people's faces.

Rant over.

YABU

You could have asked her to drop the bag to her feet?

MisSalLaneous · 10/09/2010 12:39

No, I tried the "excuse me" bit, but she either didn't hear me or ignored me. Everyone pressing against each other, so gentle nudge didn't work either.

I guess I could have made a huge scene and started shouting, but really, after rough day at the office, I just want to get home.

Surely you know (or can see if you look back) that a bag at head hight in a packed train will hit someone else in the face?

YANBU, I hate the need for people to take handbags anyway tbh, it just enforces all the negative stereotypes of women. (Uh, sorry, ended up ranting!)
I was whacked in the arm the other day by one of those ridiculous handbags that people wear as close to their armpit as possible, meaning they stick out at the side and then they have to wrap their elbows round them!

I carry everything in my pockets or wear my rucksack. (Although people can be equally annoying with those). If I'm standing on a bus or something, it usually goes at my feet.

MisSalLaneous · 10/09/2010 12:48

That's the problem, Skyrg - over the shoulder, stuck under the armpits. So whilst it might not be very "wide" to the carrier's sides, it sticks out at the back, however much they refuse to look back.

YANBU - I particularly hate when said monster bag is on the shoulder and then she sits next to you smashing you in the ribs before she swings it on to her lap, FGS take it off your arm first.

I also have this issue with some rucksack users and laptop bag carriers, I don't want to want to whacked round the head by your ipad, piss off!

Mingg · 10/09/2010 13:24

So what size bag would be acceptable to you? Or maybe no bags at all :) ?

MisterW · 10/09/2010 13:27

I used to lean on people who had rucksacks on their backs on rush hour tube trains. I suggest lots of bumping into the bag until she gets the message.

Claw3 · 10/09/2010 13:28

If someones bag kept hitting me in the face, i would say something. No need to shout or cause a scene, but an "excuse me, your bag is hitting me in the face, could you lower it please".

Or do you mean potentially it could have hit you in the face?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 10/09/2010 13:30

And people who carry their umbrella in their hand and whiz it back and forth. My dd had a near miss on Tuesday with a brolly. My immediate reactin was to grab it on the backstroke and pull. The stupid tart overmade up lady nearly fell off her 20cm heels.

MisSalLaneous · 10/09/2010 13:32

I think bag size should correspond with level of common sense. So yes, some people should go without bags. Grin

Seriously though - it's not the bags per se, but inconsiderate use that's the issue. Like all in life, I guess.

Oooh kreecher, you're right. Umbrellas are one of my pet hates actually. In heavy rain, fine, but watch where you're going. In light rain.. seriously, do you NEED it? What, is your precious hair going to get a bit damp? Stupid invention anyway, those metal spikes are eye height to a lot of children.

Mingg - I don't think it's size, it's more the shape and how it's held.

The other one is people with those bags who sit on a seat on the train, and somehow fail to notice that their enormous bag is taking up the other seat as well. On your lap or at your feet, not difficult..

MisSalLaneous · 10/09/2010 13:36

Claw3, no, it was one of those horrendous rush-hour trips. It actually hit me in the face. Not hard, just annoying, and then kept brushing against me. Tube was so full I couldn't move out of the way, so I ended up turning around, at least better from the back.

Claw3 · 10/09/2010 13:50

MisSal, we are far too polite sometimes arent we.

I did once ask a lady to move her bag off of the seat, so i could sit down. Her narky response was "where would you suggest i put it"......i was tempted to tell her! Grin

MisSalLaneous · 10/09/2010 13:52

Grin Claw3. She was asking for it though, I would have been tempted to reply too! Such a missed opportunity.

Next time, MisSal, next time i might be brave enough! (i doubt it very much, i say sorry when people bump into me )
