to not want to cut down my buddleia?

We moved into our house last year, which has required a ridiculous amount of renovation (had been empty for months, previously occupied by oddballs with very odd taste, kitchen had been ripped out etc.)
Next door neighbours both sides are nice enough. One one side is a lady of around 70. She has asked me many times to cut down a buddleia that borders our two properties, but is on our side. Now, I love it. Yes it is tall, but shorter than the beech, willow and two massive conifers on her side that block my view. All of these trees are on the border between the properties.
Now, it would appear that the only reason she wants me to chop it down is because "buddleia are supposed to be shrubs, not trees". Not because it is restricting her view, shading her garden or any other practical reason. (The other trees do this already). I love it because it attracts the bees and butterflies. Neighbours on the other side recently cut down their beautiful lilac to maximise their view, so insects will already have been displaced. Also, it is simply not on my priority list, there is still so much to do on the house.
So, am I being unreasonable to not cut it down? It is too big and awkwardly placed to do ourselves, we would need to get a specialist, so I really resent paying for something that I don't want to happen. She came over yesterday with the details of one she has used before.

As far as I can see, our options are:

a) refuse to cut down tree, risk upsetting neighbour
b) agree to have it cut down, if she considers cutting the ridiculously large conifers on her side (we would have an amazing view if they were gone)
c) agree to cut it if she goes half on costs
d) agree to cut it if she pays
e) just cut it, no fuss.

What would you do? Is it worth upsetting her or not?

Thanks :)

Oh, I know she'd be happy with a rowan.... we cut an ash half way as it was massive, and she came over to express how uspet she was that the "rowan" had gone. It was still there, and still an ash!

Thing is StayFrosty, the conifers are HUGE (As tall as our 4 floor house) so I'm imagining they will be quite expensive to remove. Buddleia surely won't cost that much, so I'd be forking out quite a lot all in all.

"Expect to pay around £100/day for a tree surgeon, give or take."

Blimey! Can I have your tree surgeon's number please? I have been quoted £1,000/day.

Effjay · 10/09/2010 10:03

Eek senua Who are your tree surgeons? that is a fortune Shock That's the daily rate for Management Consultants or real surgeons. You need to shop around a bit.

loopyloops · 10/09/2010 10:19

W~HAT? A grand a day? In that case it's staying!

Cut down the buddleia. You will get masses of growth and lots of butterflies next year. You do not need a specialist to do this: a hacksaw will do.

spiritmum · 10/09/2010 10:43

Shock Senua.

Mind you, I am in the sticks with tree surgeons aplenty.

Even so though...Shock

Personally I hate buddleia - I consider it a weed albeit a pretty one that attracts butterflies etc. We have neighbours walls with the plant growing out of it so it grows just about anywhere. Buddleia grows about 3ft a year so it needs to be lopped regulary to keep on top of it.

I would try to come to some comprimise with her - you scratch my back i scratch yours etc so you both get what you want.

Good luck!

You hate buddlias lazycow007 Shock

Prune it right down

Speak to her about her conifers (nasty things)

PrivetDancer · 10/09/2010 22:37

Our gardener pruned one of our buddleia (only down to about 3 or 4 foot) and it completely died.

He said he'd never managed to kill one before - seemed quite pleased with himself!

ChippingIn · 11/09/2010 02:43

B

It's the only option I'd offer her Grin

nomedoit · 11/09/2010 02:54

Help! I have a buddleia that I massacred last year it came right back from 12 inches to about 7 feet.

But, it still has a dangly, shapeless shape. It just sprouts randomly. How do I get it to be more bushy and less stringy? Should I try to shape it as it grows in the spring?

gtamom · 11/09/2010 03:43

I am amazed at this! My butterfly bushes usually die and I replant each year. Tallest one has ever grown has been about 5 foot.
What am I doing wrong? I planted 5 this spring, none are over 4 feet tall.

I'd just trim in in answer to the original, question. You like it, and it is your yard, not her's. I would never ask neighbors to cut anything down, it seems rude to me.

ragged · 11/09/2010 04:13

Your neighbour is being quite cheeky in asking at all.
I'd go for option B) and try to see about cultivating a budleia or 2 elsewhere on my property (away from her boundary).
