not allowed to do French at preschool

I tend to steer clear of AIBU but I need some quick responses which this thread won't get if it is posted in preschool.
DD (4) attends a preschool which changed hands over the summer. The LA also increased the hours of funding from 2.5 to three. Last term I paid top up fees so I effectively paid for half and hour so she could attend three hours. In addition I paid £30 for her to have a group French lesson which she enjoyed immensely
Now the LA pays for three hours so the preschool have extended their session by 15minutes and charge this at £15 per hour. My financial circumstances have changed (not for the better) and I decided I would drop her off 15 minutes later so she attends solely for the funded period. I emailed the owner and manager to let them know and received a confirmation that this would be OK. Today I have received a letter telling me DD will not be allowed to French because of funding policy. Are they being unreasonable or am I?

I should add that of course I would be willing to carry on paying for the french lessons. They are just denying me the chance to.

I am not sure how the French fits in. Is it because the French takes place during a non funded part of preschool?

If you are paying for t on top I am not sure why finding comes into it.

ruddynorah · 09/09/2010 14:35

sorry i don't understand. what has the french got to do with the funding?

toolly · 09/09/2010 14:37

The french is an extra. The letter says that DD will not be offered french because I have not paid the top up fees. Sorry if I have not made that clear.

Do they understand that you are happy to pay for the french lessons? If so, then they are being unreasonable I would have thought.

Is it particularly important to you that she learns french for some reason? If so then there are probably other classes you could take her to outside of preschool.......or even a tutor at home.

Have you clarified with them that you are still happy to pay for the French lessons?

It sounds like a misunderstanding to me at this point.

Hulababy · 09/09/2010 21:29

I agree. I would clarify with them that you both understand the letter. D they think you have chosen not to pay for the French fees as well?

Are they allowed to only offer French to children attending for the full session (inc the top up 15 mins)? Surely that can't be right. I would definitely follow it up and get clarification.

Does the frecnch lesson start before your dd turns up?

pointydog · 09/09/2010 21:46

And how many french lessons do you get for £30?

toolly · 09/09/2010 22:12

You get 10 french lessons (about 20 minutes). She's learnt quite a lot and enjoys it that is why I would like her to continue.
I have spoke to the owner again and she assures me this is a decision the LA have made. They are adamant they will not allow parents to pay extra fees for things like french whilst they are in the funded period IFYSWIM. I am just getting my head around it.
I feel sorry for the owner now. Loads of parents are really upset, the french teacher is upset because of funding policy.

It sounds as if the school are wanting to charge you almost £7 for a 15 min french lesson, if I've understood correctly?

I get this as almost £4 for 15 minutes + £3 for each of the french lessons. As the french lessons can't take part in the LA funded time, they must be taking part in the extra 15 minutes.

If this is right, then you can surely find a cheaper french lesson elsewhere?

Hulababy · 09/09/2010 22:29

You could alwys phone the LA and ask them for clarification of their policy on this.
