To have my mirena put in under GA????

dh thinks its ridiculous Sad and is being a bit funny about it.

I had ptsd after traumatic birth with ds2. I am terrified of anything medical now, in fact most things, even seeing the hygenist is a big deal. My pain threshold has lowered considerably and Im anxious about having stuff done.

So my consultant has offered to put a mirena in under GA, well not GA as such, I wont be intubated, just a laryngeal mask, with minimal sedation for the 10 minutes it will take him to do it. So no more risk than being sedated for anything else really.

So AIBU?

Are you having it just for contraception or for management of heavy bleeding?

If it is just for contraception would an implanon implant be better for you.

YANBU, some people cope very well with having the mirena inserted and some people really struggle. You should do what is best for you.

YANBU re your DH's comments.

Small point - if you have a larry mask stuck down your throat then you most definitely are having a full general anaesthetic. Not sedation.

Common misconception from even fairly holistic surgical types, who also think there's something called a "light anaesthetic".

mosschops30 · 09/09/2010 13:48

brux I used to be an anaesthetic nurse so I know that Smile
I imagine it will be a bit of propofol and management of airway, with possibility of LMA, but I have to discuss this with the anaesthetist

Fair enough, didn't want you to be mislead.

Emster30 · 09/09/2010 14:48

yanbu. i would like the coil but i only gave birth 7 weeks ago and simply can't face any more fiddling around down there for now, so am taking cerazette instead. if sedation is an option i might rethink!

mosschops30 · 09/09/2010 14:56

I feel your pain emster Wink I am going private though, not sure if its done routinely on the NHS but Im sure someone can tell you if it can be done

You go for it. It's between you and your consultant.

jobhuntersrus · 09/09/2010 16:55

I had mine fitted under GA after a failed attempt at having it done by GP. I passed out while they were trying to fit it and gave them a bit of a fright so they refused to try again and said it would be safer done in hospital under GA. Initially I thought I wouldn't have it as it would be an unnecessary GA but GP convinced me it would be perfectly safe and would be worth it, I think she is a big mirena coil fan!!

HalfTermHero · 09/09/2010 17:45

In your shoes and feeling as you do, I would use condoms and if that isn't good enough for dh he can go and have the snip. My dh would have the snip in a heartbeat if I had your issues (assuming you don't want to go through another birth, of course). I think he is selfish, frankly. He should have a lot more sympathy with you and support your choices rather than critise them.

YANBU

Your consultant has recognised your need and offered it to you, so he obviously thinks that it is fine for you. I'm sorry that your DH lacks understanding.

Have you considered seeing a hypnotherapist for your fear? I really think it could help you (not talking about this in particular, just the future).

I had a copper coil taken out on Monday this week and a mirena one put in. Also had an endometiral biopsy at the same time. I was in ALOT of pain and was nearly in tears. The consultant said that they prefer to do it without a LA or a GA. Next time I would insist on some form of pain relief. I had to take two days off from work due to the cramping. Am feeling now and bracing myself for any side effects I have heard about it. The mirena was put inserted in the hope that it would stop or lighten my heavy and prolonged periods. Also for contraceptive purposes

evenmoremiserablethanbefore · 28/06/2011 19:19

I had mirena put in for severe heavy periods....was fabulous....my 3 week period turned into ONE DAY!!! and quite alot of spotting but,it was heaven compared to what id put up with for years.(it fell out though :(( )
my hubby had a vasecomy after i refused him sex until he had it done.....much easier for a man.
we already had 3 children and 1st birth ,i ended up with swab being left in causing severe PID,had laser treatment,2nd birth - severe haemorrage,3rd birth....emergency section.....(was all worth it though :)
so you can understand that id already been through enough and they werent gunna touch my bits anymore!!!! decided it was husbands turn!! he was back at work (building) 3 days after his snip.(but did he milk it those few days!!)

ps; for me the mirena didnt hurt first time (under GA with 2 other procedures) ,but it fell out ,so i had another put in without pain relief and insertion did hurt but only for seconds.the worst pain was later as it was 'settling in',so make sure you take strong painkillers......had no problems after that until,lo and behold .....it fell out again several months later.the doc said it was due to the large blood clot dragging it out (sorry tmi)

YADefinitelyNBU

I had my first Mirena fitted 2 weeks ago and a biopsy at same time. Had to fight like hell to get a consultant gynae to do it rather than a nurse. (I have cancer-related issues which is his specialism.) I refused to do it without anasthetic because I also have PTSD. They persuaded me to only have local and despite painkilling "gel" I was literally in screaming agony from start to finish and for 2 days after. (Not a wimp - I have annual colonoscopies with minimal sedation and they are fine). It took 40 minutes because my cervix kept flipping back the other way. The nurse who was initially sniffy told me afterwards there was no way she could have got it in.

Please DO NOT have this procedure without sedation! They tell you that most people "tolerate" it without (presumably because it's cheaper and quicker for people to just bite their lip) but this is not the fricking middle ages! I had to spit the dummy in the middle of the procedure (used language and everfink Blush - uncharacteristic!) and they slapped a bit more gel in and promised to sedate me next time. It's lucky that your gynae is so understanding, but your husband sounds less so....!

(OTOH I am really pleased with my Mirena - no pain after first couple of days, and quite randomly my skin is best its been for 20 years!)

I had my mirena put in with no anaesthetic - just at GP surgery. I felt no pain at all. Had it taken out under GA as it went wandering. Was ill for a week following GA - really tired, shaking. Not quite sure if you're going to hospital for this, but the whole hospital procedure is a right pallava. Had to go in for blood test, pre-op appointment, then on day of op, had to be there at 8am having starved from 10pm the night before. DH had to take a day off as I couldn't be left alone following GA. Several staff asked me the same (very personal) questions over and over again. Sat there til lunchtime, naked in gown and thirsty. I think it's easier to have it put in at the GPs is my point - but I guess only you know what you've been through and what you can cope with.
