this morning at 1.30 the smoke alarm suddenly wet off. i shot out of bed to investigate - nothing- then it stopped, then started again a few times over the next hour.

dh didn't even flinch or roll over let alone wake up Hmm

today he had a day of and i asked him to sort out a new battery and hoover the blasted thing.

roll forward to now.

it has just started doing it again.

has dh investigated and fixed it? no he bloody hasn't.
?

his solution? to pull it off the ceiling - it was wired into the mains - he claims he didn't know this.

so now it is broken and i am alarmless over night. not that he bloody noticed when the bloody thing went off anyway.

i am not happy.

his slution

What a pain.

In our area the firemen will do home visits and talk about escape routes etc. They also fit smoke alarms if needed.

Every cloud eh?

EccentricaGallumbits · 06/09/2010 21:02

but now??? will they come round now?

OP posts:
Altaira · 06/09/2010 21:03

only if the worst happens Grin

Sorry!

Meglet · 06/09/2010 21:06

I would be sending him off to the nearest large 24 hour supermarket and get him to buy another one.

I used to work for the fire service so it's been drummed into me to not muck about with smoke alarms. We have 6 Blush.

pozzled · 06/09/2010 21:08

Agree with Meglet, is there somewhere he can get it replaced tonight? That would teach him not to leave important jobs.

Altaira · 06/09/2010 21:09

Meglet--6! How big is your house/mansion?

Where are they?

EccentricaGallumbits · 06/09/2010 21:09

he thinks i am unreasonable as 'it's only for one night'.

i'm going to ave to sleep on the sodding sofa (as if that'll save us in event of a catastrophe) ( the dog is damaged so may sleep on sofa anyway)

it's one of the very few non-negotiables i have - seatbelts, teeth brushing and smoke alarms.

EccentricaGallumbits · 06/09/2010 21:10

he's gone to bloody bed (works silly hours)

Meglet · 06/09/2010 21:12

altira my house is tiny. i'm just a worrier Grin.

One by the kitchen door and one at the bottom of the stairs (open plan downstairs)

One on the landing.

One in each of the 3 bedrooms.

And a carbon dioxide alarm.

EccentricaGallumbits · 06/09/2010 21:13

it's not as if the bloody thing woke him up anyway. and it's so so loud.

EG - if you don't calm down I will find Tokyonambu and get her to explain the actual chance of you having a house fire tonight - it will probably be the same odds as a Green Geenie appearing in the next 5 minutes :)

Tell DH if he doesn't sort it out tomorrow you will call a man who can Wink

What's wrong with your dog??

Altaira · 06/09/2010 21:16

Meglet I think you are v sensible. Esp good to have them in DC bedrooms (imo).

However, you have 6 and EccentricaG has none......do you see where I'm going with this?

AuntieMaggie · 06/09/2010 21:16

Yes the fire brigade will fit one but not at this time of night - sorry :)

Bonus is it has a 10 year battery or something too.

booyhoo · 06/09/2010 21:18

i vote for firemen!!

sorrento56 · 06/09/2010 21:19

Of course your home won't burst into flames tonight as it knows you have no alarmHmm. Your husband is an idiot.

We have 3 smoke alarms and 2 carbon monoxide alarms.

EccentricaGallumbits · 06/09/2010 21:19

Glad your doggy is okay.

WantAnEasyLife · 06/09/2010 21:25

sorrento, can i ask why 2 cma and where?

(We only have 1, near the boiler, but am panicking now)

notsocrates · 06/09/2010 21:25

I had a friend whose 6 yo DD died in a fire at their house. He got to her room and rescued her but she had breathed in too much smoke Sad Even though he is sure she opened her eyes in the ambulance and looked at him, she did not make it Sad. He had no smoke alarms. I won't make the same mistake.

sorrento56 · 06/09/2010 21:27

One in the utility room and one in our bedroom - though I am wondering now if that is a smoke alarm and it was CM alarm in our bedroom at our last house.

KickArseQueen · 06/09/2010 21:30

What would have happened if it hadn't made any noise when it went wrong? We've got 1 carbon monoxide 4 smoke detectors, 2 of which are the optical type, I need another 3, and they all get tested every week :) How many people have tested theirs in the last week (since this post doesn't count Grin)...

Can you tell I woke up in a house full of smoke when I was 8 yrs old?

WantAnEasyLife · 06/09/2010 21:31

We don't have utility room Grin.

The boiler is in the kitchen and i thought one there is enough. Should i have one upstairs too?

costacoffee · 06/09/2010 21:31

That is so sad notsocratesSad we have two smoke alarms which I feel very happy about knowing we have children especially.
