To think its ridiculous you can do nothing about loud music from a party?

I am exhausted today as I spent a restless night on the sofa after a house about 2 mins away had a party till the early hours of the morning and played music so loudly it was impossible to try and sleep in our bedroom.

Music was on and off all day, then at about 8ish it got turned up, full bass. God knows what time they turned it up, I fell asleep on the sofa at about 1.30am and woke up at 5am and it was off.

I wanted to phone the police but they just say they don't deal with noise issues and the council will do nothing unless it is a regular occurance.

About three weeks ago we had the same from a different set of neighbours and I had to spend another uncomftable night on the sofa then as well.

I am fully prepared to accept IABU as I am 32 weeks pregnant and exhausted. Dh starts work at 5am 6 days a week so Sunday is my only chance of a lay in and I had been looking forward to having a lay in all week. Until I realised I was going to have to sleep in the living room with the telly on loud and the fan on to try and drown out the nosie.

AIBU to think that we should be able to report anti-social behaviour like this. What is the point of having laws to say music cannot be played after a certain time if no one enforces it?

YANBU but didn't you just ask them to turn it down a bit or, at least, turn the bass down? Apologies if there is "history" so that you can't.

I completely agree that there should be some way of reporting anti-social noise at the time it's happening.

I have occasionally noisy neighbours too. I bought some really very good earplugs. I know this is not ideal with a small child but it worked for me. I could still hear DD on baby monitor (when she was small) and it cut out enough noise so that I could sleep.

YANBU. I agree with you completely. Have had the same problem with my neighbours and have been known to storm over there in my PJs to tell them off! I also called the police and insisted they come and do something about it. Have two very young DSs and barely and sleep as it is so need to grab every minute I can. Just think it's antisocial to play loud music after 11pm on any day of the week. If you want an all night party, hire a place in non residential area. Babies screaming all night, now that's another matter! :)

If this was a one-off party from your neighbours then I'm afraid YAB a bit U. It seems unreasonable to me to expect people never to make a loud noise in case they disturbed someone. I sympathise with you though, being pg and uncomfortable.

DH was going to go over but there were a lot of young men in the front garden who looked quite intimidating. I don't really know these neighbours, they live across the way and I didn't know if it was just teenagers or if there were adults there to.

They must have been keeping everyone around here awake so I presumed if turing it down was a possiblilty someone who actually knows them would have done so.

If it was one off then it was probably a special occasion for them.

People do have parties, birthdays, etc.

paisleyleaf · 05/09/2010 17:52

yanbu I only found this out the other night myself. I was sure there'd be some sort of number to ring to report it.

Quenbioz · 05/09/2010 17:54

YANBU. No-one needs music so loud it annoys the neighbours.

hairytriangle · 05/09/2010 17:54

YANBU. But you could have (or asked your DP to) gone and asked politely if they'll turn it down.

Police will intervene if it carries on all night in my experience.

Heracles · 05/09/2010 17:57

If it's not regular then you should just let it go, I feel. It wasn't even an all-nighter; it's a bit annoying, but that's living near other people for you...

YANBU. If they are spilling out onto the street the police can do something about it.

I'd have been tempted to go and hammer on their door 1st thing this morning to make sure they were up.
