To hate it when kids exclaim Oh My God!

I was at the annual school fair today. I lost count of how many times I heard 5-12 year children exclaim "oh my godddddd", that was .

The phrase grates me to my core.

I am not even religious, so I am not sure why it bothers me. Some sort of respect issue I think as well as it sounding a bit cheap.

?

ditto. exactly what I think too. Heard it a lot this week and it's really bugging me.

serenity · 04/09/2010 14:17

My DCs say Oh My Gosh (and Darn, for some reason), which sounds terribly twee to me, but is probably a Good Thing as they go to a church school. I'm quite fond of a bit of pseudo-blasphemous cussing myself, but definitely not in front of the DCs.

You're entitled to your feelings so NBU to dislike it (hate is a bit strong surely?) but there are far, far worse things for 5-12yos to say, believe me.

PadmeHum · 04/09/2010 14:17

Why is it always delivered with a slightly whingy/nasal tone?

Why do I care so much???

I hate it too and have forbidden my two to say it.I'm not particularly religious, but other people are and it is disresepctful.

PadmeHum · 04/09/2010 14:20

I dunno Serenity. I think I have issues with this one Wink.

I do really hate it.

My kids so oh my goodness which is a bit twee (I agree) but altogether less High School Musical.

PadmeHum · 04/09/2010 14:21

My kids say rather...

Technoprisoners · 04/09/2010 14:25

My 4 year old DS says "Oh my little godness".

nagoo · 04/09/2010 14:26

Is it the American twang? I hate 'Maaann' and will garrote my nephew the next time he says it in front of my DS Wink

serenity · 04/09/2010 14:32

It all comes from those irritating Disney kid shows like Suite Life of Zach and Cody and Hannah Montana (which I thought we'd bypassed, but the DCs sadly discovered over the summer holidays)

nelliesmum · 04/09/2010 14:44

I was looking at rather a nice child's teeshirt in M&S when I noticed it had "OMG" as part of the print. I was quite shocked, when didi any of this become normal.

I would rather my children said "Fuck" than "Oh My God", speaking as a not terribly fanatical but none the less heart-felt Christian.

Onetoomanycornettos · 04/09/2010 14:51

I've had to teach my two not to say it, I agree the first time I heard my eldest say 'Ow my gawd' I just thought, we can't have that...

Philosykos · 04/09/2010 14:52

My DCs have started saying it. It drives me to distraction. DS1 picked it up at school and the little ones are copying him.

I actually swear quite a lot around the house (less than I used to but I was one of those people for whom it is a reflex in stressful situations - am working on it), but never say that for respect reasons.

And of course the DCs never copied any of my "shit shit shit shit shits" or "fucking hells" but are all saying "oh my godddddddd" and I tell them not to and they keep doing it and I am sure it's some sort of ironic punishment for being so filthy-mouthed.

nelliesmum · 04/09/2010 14:54

I had to allow myself "bloody", even my DH agreed on that one. I should be able to not swear but...

BoojaB · 04/09/2010 14:58

DD's started to say it, as I do all of the time.

As a devout athiest, I has no problem with it! We'll need to expand her vocab soon though, to include Jesus Christ, and flaming hell. Wink

BoojaB · 04/09/2010 14:59

"I has no problem" - I think I need to improve my own vocubulary first!!! Blush

Starbuck999 · 04/09/2010 14:59

I think YABU. Oh my god doesn't sound that bad, certainly no way near as bad as FUCK nelliesmum!!

My dd says it sometimes (she is 6) by not in an attitude kind of way with that american twang, just "oh my god" when she is surprised. I say it alot so I guess she's picked up on it from me. I also say "Jesus!" alot, not sure why, much better than swearing though, which I very rarely do.

BackOnceAgain · 04/09/2010 15:00

I dislike it for same reasons as the OP.

ds 2.5 says "oh my goodness me" where he has picked this up from is anyone's guess Confused

clemetteattlee · 04/09/2010 15:02

DD went through a phase of saying it and then stopped. DS currently doing it. I have no idea where they have picked it up because their TV viewing is limited to CBeebies but for DS I am following the same tack I did with DD - just ignoring it. Forbidding anything in this house makes it much more inviting.
Now DD says "oh my word" and both of them have embraced "you are a poo-poo head". I will continue to ignore (and inwardly wince) Wink

seeker · 04/09/2010 15:03

I stop my children saying this. I explain that while we are not religious, other people are, and it might offend them. Not appropriate for children, IMHO

pagwatch · 04/09/2010 15:08

My DD is more likely to say bollocks.
But she sees it (OMG) said on tv etc and has been known to say it. I don't like it because it makes the person saying it sound like an air head

But I still get slightly more annoyed that she has started correcting herself by saying that she shouldn't say it " as it will make Jesus cry" Hmm

I have suggested that if Jesus is likely to cry over something so trivial he needs to shape up a bit - that I think she is probably under estimating him a little

MrsCadwallader · 04/09/2010 15:15

My instinctive reaction is one of irritation when I hear kids say it, simply because I dislike hearing kids saying any 'adult' phrases - it just feels inappropriate.

However, as a Christian, I have to tell myself to get over it as, after all, the exclamation of 'Oh my God!' is.... well.... it's nowt but a prayer, is it? Wink Grin

hystericalmum · 04/09/2010 16:44

I say it. And now my children say it! They know not to swear though. Biscuit

VictoriousSponge · 04/09/2010 16:52

agree under 12 or so is bad

SauvignonBlanche · 04/09/2010 16:52

I hate it too. DS is always saying it.Blush

pagwatch · 04/09/2010 16:52

I find 'just, like...' even more annoying. As in 'well we gotthere and it was just like brilliant and I was just like wow this is so great...

A guy on Radio 5 was interviewing one of the female rowers at the youth olympics. she kept saying.... 'and it is just like great here and like so exciting and like I can't wait to compete ...' all the time. At the end he said " and that was jenny excitable who doing like rowing'.

Made me arf Grin
