FFS yet another reason to feel guilty about formula feeding!

So in addition to potentially lethal bacteria, some formula milks also contain dangerously high levels of aluminuim.

www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1308517/Health-fear-Up-40-times-aluminium-formula-milk-breast-milk.html

Just what I needed to read with a 6 week old DS who will not breastfeed fulltime (uses me as a dummy and then screams for a bottle as well) as I was in such agony with bleeding nipples that I had to run out to Asda in tears in the early hours of the morning to get him bottles and formula and of course since then he prefers bottles!

Of course the article says that there is less aluminium in the powder but I have been giving DS the ready made cartons to avoid the risk of the bacteria in the bloody powder!!

AIBU in being fucking furious that formula milk manufacturers cannot provide a product that will not potentially harm my baby? Apparently the aluminuim residues come from the packaging. Why can't they sell it in glass jars then? I am positive that people would not mind paying extra for that.

Oh apparently they've know about this for years so at least my other 3 DCs who were all on FM at some point have all been potentially poisoned too not just this one FFS.

Where are the government is all this? I know they are promoting breastfeeding but some people can't and have no option but to buy formula. Why are these companies not more tightly controlled?

Erm...I've not read the article, but you seem slightly hysterical. I've never met anyone who's been 'poisoned' by formula milk.

deakell · 03/09/2010 22:36

Not to ignore your concerns, but it's the Daily Fail!

Biggest scaremongers going.

If the FSA and/or DoH hasn't made a statement (check their websites for information), I wouldn't stress about it too much.

2shoes · 03/09/2010 22:38

yabu
don't read the crap
babies are not poisoned by FF, the mums minds are poisoned by crap like this.

TheCrackFox · 03/09/2010 22:40

Stop reading the Daily Mail the health section can tip anyone over the edge.

BigMommaOfAlmost4 · 03/09/2010 22:42

Well it was in The Sun as well if that makes any difference Hmm.

Am not hysterical just pissed off that I have no choice but to buy a product which could POTENTIALLY cause my baby harm in later life. I am aware it is a potential risk but it is a risk that should not be there.

'poisoned' well that is what it would be.

I FF DS, Heinz Nuture and HiPP. I don't think HiPP comes in ali lined tubs, think it was plastic in card.

Altaira · 03/09/2010 22:52

Formula milk is big business. I would like to say that they would not knowingly be making a product that was harmful, but having read how they modify their formulas in developing countries, I wouldn't really trust them.

I think it does demonstrate that it is difficult to replicate breastmilk and there may be a lot we don't yet know about benefits and risks of FF.

As you say, many mothers use formula and it is very worrying to hear there may be risks, but difficult to interpret the science when translated into tabloid speak.

EgyptVanGogh · 03/09/2010 22:53

6 weeks = growth spurt. Constant feeding, never satisfied. Lasts about a week. He is upping your supply. Get your latch checked - it shouldn't hurt.

scottishmummy · 03/09/2010 22:54

dont berate yourself about ff.live with your choices

fuschiagroan · 03/09/2010 22:54

Oh never mind, there's toxins in absolutely everything. There are safety tests for formula, as much and more as there are for anything.

2shoes · 03/09/2010 22:57

strange i gave both my dc's poison and they are fine(ds is 18)
FF is not poison ffs

CheckingCheques · 03/09/2010 23:02

You are doing your best for your baby. You are doing the best for your family. This is scaremongering. OK, formula is not as good as breastmilk, we all know that. But it's a hell of a lot better than letting your baby starve.

Don't let this get to you chick. You need to focus your energies on nurturing your family

scottishmummy · 03/09/2010 23:11

op,keep opining ff=poison plenty will pile in and agree.posting stats from shitsville uni that ff causes
boils
bunions
tennis elbow
...just to cheer you up

so congratulations on baby.live well.feed your own baby guilt free.and best wishes

ForzaDelDestino · 03/09/2010 23:12

what SM said

SirBoobAlot · 03/09/2010 23:19

Stop beating yourself up. Make up the formula in the safest way, store it in the safest way, use it in the safest way, and be content that you are being as safe as you can be.

Though as an aside, six weeks is major growth spurt time. As for your nipples bleeding, have you had your latch checked?

I hope you feel better soon - don't let the Fail get you down.

verylittlecarrot · 03/09/2010 23:20

bollocks, SM.

I bet not one person posts that ff = poison in all seriousness.

OP I agree there should be tighter controls on formula companies and more transparency about formula contents. There is far less control than many people assume, and it seems to be too easy for manufacturers to introduce novel ingredients without proper testing or proven benefit, just to get a competitive marketing angle.

(and no, I do not think formula is poison)

scottishmummy · 03/09/2010 23:23

really?have seen plenty mn ff causes bunions, blisters etc and links from shitsville uni or youtube of some guru to substantiate

mamatomany · 03/09/2010 23:27

Egypt is right, it's a slippery slope, if you want to carry on BF you have to let him use you as a dummy in order that the body know it's required to make more milk, just one of those things.

duchesse · 03/09/2010 23:28

If one read the DM every day, one would in my opinion be left a sobbing wreck within a couple of weeks, cowering at home in a tin foil helmet. Manufacturers rarely sell poisonous stuff to consumers. It wouldn't look good. I think you are a little fragile at the moment, but I truly believe that your baby will be absolutely fine.

scottishmummy · 03/09/2010 23:31

lol,If one read mn every day,one would be left a sobbing wreck within a couple of hours cowering at home yacking i'll get the popcorn, not like ole days, are you newbie

SkiHorseWonAWean · 04/09/2010 04:24

The more I read this shit, the more it gets my heckles up and makes me think formula from day one for my next child.

Yes, there will be trace elements in formula - like everything I suppose. Like the vegetables you grow in your garden and lovingly prepare. Like your breast milk. Which, if you're to believe the stories, contains up to 1000 synthesised chemicals due to atmostpheric pollution, general pollution and believe it or not - the shit that people rub in to their hair/face/lips etc.

So unless you're planning on feeding your baby mannah from heaven we're all a bit fucked. ConfusedGrin

In defence of formula-feeding mummies battling verrucas, bunions and failure to share the remote control, formula feeding has been proven to improve dress sense. Studies have shown repeatedly that BF mummies wear ill-fitting tents woven from lentils.*

*May or may not be true.

OnEdge · 04/09/2010 06:39

bigmomma you considered expressing with a pump and then bottle feeding it. Less painful and no aluminium from packaging.

pommedeterre · 04/09/2010 07:06

Hmm... when I have one of these weird wobbles about the fact I ended up ff I sit and think about how my dh and myself are slim, intelligent and healthy. I then feel reassured and very full of myself!

TheHouseofMirth · 04/09/2010 07:35

Bigmomma, I'm sure with 3 other DCs you must have your hands full but none of the breast feeding problems you describe are unusual, or insurmountable, if you want to get back to BF full-time. La Leche League: 0845 120 2918 and NCT 0300 330 0771 have helplines, or ask your HV if there is a BF cafe in your area. Good luck!

wahwah · 04/09/2010 08:07

Calm down! Remember YOU are not being 'used like a dummy', dummies are a substitute for you. Having said that, 6 weeks is a tough time, so you have my sympathies and I hope you get some breastfeeding support.
