thinking people should clean up after their dogs?

We live in small cul de sac of about 20 houses. There is a small communal green area which is very rarely used. We are the only people with kids so I use it sometimes to play with the kids (our garden is tiny), just messing about or having a small picnic. Othere people in the estate are quite a bit older than us so no small kids.
Anyway one family (parents and grown up son) have a dog which they let out to run around in the evenings. I have no problem with this. He is a lovely dog, and just runs around a bit and chases a ball. He is never out for that long.
However I have started to notice that this family never clean up after him, and the little green area is now covered in dog poo. I can't really let the kids play there now. I don't know the family very well, except for saying hello. I am not sure how they will react if I point this out to them, after all they can hardly be unaware that he is doing it, they are out with him all the time. Its a such a small estate I don't want to have a falling out with neighbours especially ones who know a lot of the others well. Maybe just easier if I clean it myself?

Interesting idea. Yes they definitely should clean up after the dog, as leaving it is disgusting - however if you do it quite visibly it may shame them into starting to do it themselves.

Or tell the council, they will clear it up, just dont say you know who it was.

and suggest they put a doggy bin and sign close to the green, maybe it will be a big enough hint.

pagwatch · 03/09/2010 17:40

Of course they should.
But no one will come on here confessing that they don't
we always clean up after Penis Dog - it is revolting not to, But i have walked down the street calling to someone who ignored their dog crapping on the pavement and offering them a doggy bag.
They did at least have the decency to look shame faced

YADNBU. I would ask them to pick up their dog mess, politley but firmly. If they refuse report them to the dog warden.

BlueFergie · 03/09/2010 17:42

No I suppose I don't think I'm being unreasonable, but I'd say thats the same for anyone posting in AIBU. I guess I am wondering about the best way to handle it.

Tiredmum - Oh the council are useless. Even cutting the grass over there is happening less because of all the cut backs. I have been trying for 3 years to get them to clear some grafetti nearby to no avail. The green is really tiny I don't think they'll put out a sign and doggy bin for it.

I know the right thing to do is ask them but I guess I am worried about a fall out.

TBE - I know, I think they may becine quite defensive about it. The mother is so house proud. Is always cleaning/ washing windows etc, but is happy enough for her dog to poo all over the green just yards from her front door. I actually suspect they may let him out just for this purpose so he doesn't poo in their garden.

only a couple of weeks back there was a story about a toddler in danger of losing her eye due to dog poo. It's vile. YANBU.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 03/09/2010 18:06

If you do gather it up, I'd be very tempted to suggest you tip it all out on their doorstep and path. Just returning what's theirs, after all.

I'd pick it all up and leave it on her front door step. It's irresponsible twits like that who give all dog owners a bad reputation.

Maybe you should contact the dog wardens and see if dogs can be banned from the green, its really not a suitable place for dogs imo.

Ripeberry · 03/09/2010 18:11

We live in a small hamlet of 20 houses and down one of the streets there is dog mess all over the place.

One resident got so fed up of cleaning up after the culprit that she put handwritten notes up on the walls and trees pleading with the perpetrator to do his duty!

The dog mess is still there.

Another familly have three dogs that they let run lose a couple of times a day and they NEVER clean up after their dogs.
If they mess in my garden I just wait until nightfall, scoop it up on a piece of carboard and deposit it on their path.

They still don't get the message Hmm

LamberDinghy · 03/09/2010 18:15

Instead of just doing it yourself, you could go round and ask if she could help you do it together. Be ridiculously nice and friendly about it, it'll make it easier to broach in the future and she might even offer to do it all herself. If you say: "seeing as it is our children and your dog that use the green..." she should feel suitably shamed - however, you do need to be prepared to do half the clean up if it comes to it.

pjmama · 03/09/2010 18:16

pagwatch is your dog really called Penis?! Brilliant! Grin

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 03/09/2010 18:28

I live by a park with public paths. I hate going down there sometimes because of all the dog fouling. Calling my local council hasn't helped unfortunately. Even when it was covered in snow all winter people would just leave their dogs poo lying there.

YANBU. Dog fouling is disgusting and people should clean up after their dogs.

Also I saw this a few days back www.metro.co.uk/news/838444-toddler-could-lose-sight-in-one-eye-from-infection-in-dogs-poo, this isn't the news [age I read it on initially but it's the same story.

pagwatch · 03/09/2010 18:29

Actually not officially [shame faced]

I call him Penis Dog. But Dh gets annoyed.

It sounds great 'shit penis dog - shit!'

pjmama · 03/09/2010 18:40

I know what you mean! I call my cat Annoying Bastard. Wink

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 03/09/2010 18:44

I have to say that the snowy, icy weather did make clearing up the dog poo from the garden much easier. If left for long enough, they turned into poopsicles that were very easy and not too unpleasant to pick up. Grin

muminthemiddle · 03/09/2010 18:56

I agree with Alouiseg, but would just shovel the lot up and throw it on their path.
Failing this shove it through their letter box.
YANBU and people like this make me want to vomit.
