AIBU or just grumpy?

It's my birthday at the weekend. Quite a big one and a friend is flying over tonight to celebrate with us. All together there will be about 20 people at the party (it's just friends - family party is in a couple of weeks) and we're having it at our house.

Now. Friend booked her flights a couple of months ago and requires a lift from the airport (and back again on Monday). She has given us a vague idea of when she is arriving, but not said a proper time. We have LOADS to do to prepare for the party, preparation which I am finding with DD in tow is not progressing very fast. DH will probably be picking her up after work, but he obviously needs to know when to leave. He can't just hang around at the airport from about 5ish onwards waiting for her to turn up.

I asked her when she booked her flights to forward me the email with details, or just email me the times, and she hasn't. I have asked her several times on the phone to do the same, and she hasn't. She promised me last night that she would - and she hasn't. FFS! I know I can check online and find out about today's flight and I know that if I just did that instead of moaning about it here that I would have found out by now - but WHY doesn't she just write me a 5 second email with the times? As if I don't have enough to bloody do!

Have just sent her an email saying that she will be stranded if she doesn't tell us when to pick her up.

AIBU to be annoyed? I know it's trivial but I find it quite bizarre behaviour!

She'll call you soon enough when she's there....if it's inconvenient let her wait for your DH or take a taxi.

You've been reasonable enough and have 20 other people to think about.

walesblackbird · 03/09/2010 10:45

I'd be irritated as well. If she can't be bothered to tell you then suggest she rings once she's picked up her luggage and then you'll leave to pick her up.

kittywise · 03/09/2010 10:45

she's an adult, I'm sure she will understand that there are consequences to behaving the way she has.

maddy68 · 03/09/2010 10:49

just wait until she calls you from the airport then go and get her

Ishouldprobablywax · 03/09/2010 10:53

I would just do a quuick google, yanbu though

Psammead · 03/09/2010 10:55

Ishouldprobablywax I have done now, and relayed the info onto DH. He works about 5 mins from the airport so it would be really stupid if he came home (40 mins) and then waited around here for a phone call to go all the way back, although I was tempted by the suggestion. We just have too much to do!

It's the principle though! Why wouldn't someone give a time? I am really pleased she's making the effort to come over and all, but FGS....

She should have emailed you the times. That said, she obviously loves you enough to fly in on your birthday so that should make you feel better.

Just wait for her to ring you from the airport. Unless she said my flight departs at 15:30 (and assuming you know where she's flying from) then you have no way of knowing when she'll arrive.

I'm sure she'll understand.

Don't be grumpy - have a fab party

DetectivePotato · 03/09/2010 14:12

I would be pissed off if I was you as well.

I hate not knowing times and stuff. She must know when her flight gets in, why not just tell you when you asked.

Your reply about her ended up stranded was a good one. If she does end up stranded, she will have to get a taxi or something. It isn't fair of your DH to come all the way home, then go back again.

Yes she is making a nice effort to fly over for your birthday but there is no reason why she couldn't let you know the details.

mumbar · 03/09/2010 14:27

Just realised your 'big birthday' I had that one 2 weeks ago and so wich you big birthday wishes.

I'm sureits just an oversight but yanbu tbh.

Nancy66 · 03/09/2010 14:35

Your friend thinks so much of you that she's flying thousands of miles and spending (presumably) a large sum of money to be with you on your birthday.

Sounds like she's a bit flakey - some people are. But look at the bigger picture.

diddl · 03/09/2010 14:40

Why does the fact that she´s flying in excuse her for not being polite enough to tell OP what time she is landing?

She´s the one wanting a lift!

Nancy66 · 03/09/2010 14:44

I doubt it's deliberate!

The Op asked if she was being unreasonable and grumpy - yeah, she is a bit.

AgentZigzag · 03/09/2010 14:51

Are you sure she's coming? Sounds weird to keep dodging it when you ask.

Have a great birthday whatever she decides she's doing Smile

diddl · 03/09/2010 15:08

So she´s had a couple of months to tell OP the flight times?

OP-I´d have told her to get taxi by now!

AgentZigzag · 03/09/2010 15:13

She sounds really selfish to me, as though she expects the world to revolve around her.

How can it not be deliberate?

OP - 'What time does your flight get in?'
Friend - '4.45'

Easy.

Like diddl says, tell her to get a taxi.

Psammead · 03/09/2010 15:33

She's landing in an hour! I'm so excited, we've been best friends since secondary school. I am still pissed and plan to rag her about it the entire weekend - that'll learn her :P

Less grumpy now - had a productive day. STILL no email from her, but I checked the time myself.

She's just someone who would play things cool sometimes, you know? The more she knows it's infuriating, the more she'd do it.

Meh - I don't care anymore - PARTY TIME! 29b here I come :D

Thanks for your replies :)

well, it is annoying she didn't email, definitely, but shurely you'd check online to make sure there wasn't a delay or whatever anyway, so don't see prob tbh

diddl · 03/09/2010 15:58

TBH I think that not answering an email with a reasonable request such as "what time do you land?" is rude.

"The more she knows it's infuriating, the more she'd do it." Hmm how childish lovely-each to their own.

OP-looks as if you should have known better than to think she would bother to answer!

ChaoticAngel · 03/09/2010 18:41

I agree with diddl.
