ffs I am giving the tv away, it works, so why the cross examination??
she even asked why dd got a new tv(after I let slip that it was dd's old tv)
If I had more than one person interested I would tell her to stuff it

I left mine outside my house on the pavement with the remote taped to the top and a Post It saying 'I work perfectly, please take me home'

Was gone in under an hour

sloanypony · 02/09/2010 18:56

Yes, I agree.

I never respond to people that ask for photos or ridiculous measurements (basic ones are okay) so they can decide whether they "want" it or not when I haven't even offered it to them.

teaandcakeplease · 02/09/2010 18:57

Same as Sloany

2shoes · 02/09/2010 18:58

i might be out when she rings tomorrow lol, trouble is I am fed up with tripping over it, and if I left it outside no doubt the shits up the road would smash it

Ha ha ha - totally.

I always ignore the ones that say "what colour is it?" or "does it have the inverted finagler included?" on the basis that they probably are at the bottom of the I really need this heirarchy.

Can't quite believe you only have one person interested in a working TV. Where do you live??? If it were on Bristol's freecycle, you'd get about 50 replies within the hour!

Ladyanonymous · 02/09/2010 19:47

I don't like it when people what to "come and have a look" to see if they want it Hmm - its FREE ffs and if you need one and don't want to buy one you cannot afford to be picky!!

Mendeleyev · 02/09/2010 19:57

And as for the people that ask for something and then don't turn up! Grrrrrrr!Angry

RandyRussian · 02/09/2010 20:15

Round here if it's not a flatscreen no-one wants to know. An ordinary one you literally can't give away. Must be worth less than a Dom's pizza Grin

People on there are too damn fussy IME. Too many just want things they can sell on Ebay.

splashy · 03/09/2010 00:41

lol at ladybiscuit.

a friend was moving out and put a load of things outside and people were at it like a load of scavengers, everything went within an hour i think.

i agree people are too picky when its free ffs! gave away a tv too once and everyone was asking is it flatscreen, can i have photos, and even.. wait for it.. does it come with an xbox?

if i had an xbox i didnt want i would sell it on ebay where they go for a fair bit!!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns · 03/09/2010 00:47

i hate what freecycles become,

the wanted adds are unbelievable, someone asking for an xbox the other day as her ds has adhd or something like that,

another asking for a high sleeper as there child had a dust alergy and needed to be further away from carpet Hmm

also a working car asked for, preferably with tax!!!!!

and the most recent was an iphone, since they needed to access emails, and no other phone will.

(load of rubbish, my touch screen samsung was £35 in cpwh on a summer deal and accesses everything, even mn)

i read them just for a laugh, and i desperatly hope there are no kind hearted people giving out to these grabby prats.

CatButler · 03/09/2010 09:03

Grin my favourite hobby horse at the moment the Freecycle greed of some people.....

I really want an Ipod touch at the moment and putting some saving together to be able to buy one.

Said to DP the other night, perhaps I should ask for one on Freecycle, joking (we'd been talking about people asking for silly things on there)

Clicked on to the latest Freecycle e-mail round-up and lo and behold there's someone on there asking for a free Ipod touch since their daughter has lost hers somewhere and was very upset.......FFS!!!!

If that was a daughter of mine she'd jolly well stay upset for a long time if she managed to casually lose a gadget like that......

expatinscotland · 03/09/2010 09:06

I stopped using it due to no-shows. I just put stuff on Gumtree as 'FREE' or on cards in the local paper. Also, we live in a council/HA building so when we have something to give away we just ask the neighbours. If they don't want it, they usually know someone who does.

bytheMoonlight · 03/09/2010 09:12

I love our freecycle.

In the past fortnight, I have recieved an ikea cot for new baby, an elc easel for dd (which is in such nice condition I am holding back for her third birthday) and today dh is going to collect a fisher price learn and groove centre for new baby.

I have also managed to get rid of a freeview box and an old TV that was cluttering up the spare room.

Ours works quite well as people are only allowed to post one wanted post a month and words like 'desperate' are baned, as are sob stories.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/09/2010 09:15

When we got new Sofas we out our old ones on the front Garden, just overnight until they were going to be collected for the dump.. i went to the shop for 10 mins and came back and they had been stolen.

For old TV's have you asked at local homless and womens shelters, maybe hospital childrens wards... that sort of thing.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/09/2010 09:20

We had a lady on ours that asked every month for several weeks for a new Phil and Teds travel system..She needed one desperately for her baby apparently Hmm
In the end i got fed up and messaged her to say i had an old bog standard Argos travel system and did she want ti if she was so desperate..

She emailed me back with a 'oh no it has to be Phil and Ted's, my twin sister has one and we like to match... i was very Hmm but emailed back saying in that case she wasn't really desperate and that her posts were coming across as if she had a baby with no pushchair, she then wrote back to say she was only 5 week pregnant. Grin

NewbeeMummy · 03/09/2010 09:26

I found Freecycle a god send when I was expecting, got almost everything we needed for her from there.

I must admit a few times I would turn up to collect an item that had been described as useable, and it obviously wasn't, but I happily took them away and readvertised them with the correct desrciption, and people happliy took them away.

My biggest annoyance with Freecycle is the no-shows, I think you should be able to post feedback (like on ebay) so that people don't constantly mess people around. (although personally I got very lucky as a result of no shows - one woman in our area, kept beating me to baby stuff, but never showed up and so I got offered it all)

DingALongCow · 03/09/2010 13:14

Ours is quite reasonable, although someone asked for a car trailer and a shed the other day.

I just got rid of two car boot loads of stuff from the house including two heavy pieces of furniture, 20 bags of books, a large metal box and 15 bags of assorted crap and got one reply from a man who wanted to know the bus route I was on so he could get the bus to come and pick it all up. I was almost tempted to say yes, had images of him wobbling down the road to the bus stop. I also ignored the cross man who said he had applied for all of my offered stuff and I hadnt bothered to reply-I had over 90 messages and posted a TAKEN once it had gone.

I dont drive though so was ecstatic to get rid of it all with minimum effort.

Pushmeinthepool · 03/09/2010 13:32

I've met some lovely people on freecycle; everyone has turned up on time to collect items, and all have been very friendly and appreciative.

I do lol at some of the wanted messages on the board though; also when you post an offered post and get replies from people saying "I'll have that" or just giving you a phone number.

princesspuds · 03/09/2010 13:37

I have just posted in the wanted section of freecycle yesterday asking for a spin dryer as my washing machine had packed up last night, wouldn't have dreamt of asking for a washing machine, I can easily hand wash the stuff.

I have had some lovely stuff from there, I got a stunning pink chest of drawers and bedside table for dd3.

There are some people who are ridiculous in their wants though.Hmm

nymphadora · 03/09/2010 13:44

I got rid if loads of stuff when I moved but had loads of 'i want it ' posts. At this house we have had masses of stuff taken from skips so I just took to leaving stuff outside with a note. Got rid of loads of plants & excess turf that way & some people put money through the door.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 03/09/2010 13:45

Oh hurrah. Another moan about Freecycle/Freegle thread.

In the rules of the forum, people are perfectly within their rights to turn up and decide that what you offer is not for them.

They are doing you a favour by getting rid of your unwanted tat preloved consumables so you don't have to take it down the tip, suffer landfill related guilt, drive to a WEEE centre / recycling centre or pay a house clearance company to take it away. It can cost £££ to recycle computer equipment for example - it is highly polluting if thrown away and a lot of people upgrade their computers regularly. Most charity shops won't take a lot of what is offered on the forum anyway because it's electrical or not high quality enough.

People can ask for what they want - ANYTHING THEY WANT - whether they get it is up to the universe - not some people who think we should be 'ever so 'umble and only ask for broken crockery and used nappies. Yes, I have seen someone ask for a car and get it and it made my heart feel a bit warmer.

If the tv is so great and works - it's perfectly reasonable to ask why someone is getting rid of it. Some of the stuff that gets offered on ours IS pretty high quality so one needs to check it's not too good to be true. I am sometimes amazed at the stuff I see given away but also amazed to get some of the massive interest in items of mine that I think are worthless.

Yes, there are people who are rude and cheeky. You're not obliged to give them anything and you can report them to the moderator.

I have met some extremely charming, interesting and occasionally weird people through giving and getting stuff.

Rant over
Grin
