Our pre-school has a uniform of sorts - polo shirts and jumpers with any kind of trouser.

redskyatnight · 01/09/2010 16:54

Ones that get dirty.

PhoenixReborn · 01/09/2010 17:00

comfortable and those which you dont mind getting dirty

purpleturtle · 01/09/2010 17:01

My older 2 just wore their normal clothes - not their best ones, but nothing specifically set aside for pre-school. DS2 -wears wore a uniform - polo shirt, sweatshirt, school trousers.

If no uniform is required, I don't think you need to get clothes specifically for pre-school.

curlymama · 01/09/2010 17:01

Anything that washes well, and that you don't mind being covered in paint or anything else messy. Bear in mind that big floaty dresses aren't great for climbing on climbing frames, and if they go on walks or anything like that they will need closed shoes and preferably legs covered.

Onlyaphase · 01/09/2010 17:02

DD goes in leggings (so she doesn't need any help going to the loo) and a t shirt or long sleeved top or tunic. There is a uniform t shirt and sweatshirt available but this is optional. Also wellies or sunhat depending on weather, with DCs names written on them to make life easier for the staff there.

Agree with Redsky - send DCs in clothes that are OK to covered in paint/flour/water on a daily basis.

carriedababi · 01/09/2010 17:03

i already don't let her wear long dresses as they get in the way of going up the slide etc.

she needs alot for autumn and winter as hardly anything from last year fits...
so i'm not buying things especially for preschool just autumn and winter stuff with keeping an eye on whats suitable for preschool

I used to buy mix and match t shirts and jogging bottoms/leggings from supermarkets/H and M - cheap and doesn't matter if they get paint splattered, sandy, wet etc. Jeans might be tricky for a recently trained child who has to use toilet independently.

colditz · 01/09/2010 17:05

Cheap comfortable ones.

chimchar · 01/09/2010 17:06

just practical, comfy clothes. layers...a tshirt and cardi/dress and cardi that children can do themselves, toilet friendly clothes too...that they don't need too much help with (dungarees and tights mine found difficult)and yes, washable on a daily basis!

domesticsluttery · 01/09/2010 17:08

Ones that they can remove easily themselves to go to the toilet (ie no dungarees), that don't get in the way of running and climbing (ie no long dresses or flip flops) and that you don't mind them getting paint on.

LisaD1 · 01/09/2010 17:37

DD2 is constantly in leggings/easy to pull up/down trousers (she's now potty trained) and also put her in things I am happy to throw out when they get ruined!

oneofthosedays · 01/09/2010 18:45

DS wears a pair of cheap grey joggers every day with a t-shirt or long sleeved top. Stuff that washes well and doesn't need ironing. Same for DD, pants and tops, nothing too special or expensive!

Ours recently had parents whinging that their child got paint on their D&G pants or whatever designer thing they were wearing and they had to send a letter out requesting not to send them in anything expensive as it was likely to get covered in paint, sand, water, food etc.

We've also had an (old, outgrown) pair of boden joggers nicked out of his nursery bag so for that reason I won't send him in anything decent either as nursery couldn't give a shit.

CuppaTeaJanice · 01/09/2010 18:59

DS has never worn a dress to preschool though........Grin

Triggles · 01/09/2010 19:01

comfortable clothing that they can easily pull up and down to use the toilet, as well as older stuff that can be covered in paint, mud, or food .. it's a time for them to have fun and be messy without worrying about clothing

Shaz10 · 01/09/2010 19:03

I love you all. As a former nursery teacher my heart would sink when I saw children appear in white lacy dresses or designer gear. I knew the parents would go mad when they got covered in play dough, and they always did. :(

chocolatefroggie · 01/09/2010 19:24

I've been wondering about this as well, I've got a couple of denim pinafore dresses some jeggings and lots of cheap long sleeved t-shirts for dd also fleece lined raincoat and wellies especially for nursery so I don't have to remember them everyday Grin I'm hoping this will pass muster

mummynoseynora · 01/09/2010 19:28

always comfy and easy for them to put on / remove themselves....

when DD first started she wore a lot of jeans (generally with belts) but as I have learned its become more leggings / trackie bottoms.... will prob get her wearing jeans as it gets colder again, but maybe elasticated waist type ones instead so easy again.

DD's 'uniform' is optional too but she always wears her preschool top - she is incapable of staying clean ever so near that much stuff she can ruin a top thats not getting worn elsewhere ;)

lizziemun · 01/09/2010 19:32

Anything that your don't mind being ruined.

As 9 times out of 10 paint will not come out even if it washable.

compo · 01/09/2010 19:33

I knew this thread would be you Grin
stock up on Cherokee / George leggings and sweatshirts
and stop worrying Grin

prozacfairy · 01/09/2010 19:41

I am very tightfisted-- love a bargain so none of DD's clothes are expensive, therefore I dont mind them getting dirty and she lives in leggings/t shirts/dresses combos. Basically things she can deal with easily when going to the loo. And wellies. The nursery is a huge fan of wellies, as is DD Smile

I have noticed quite a few little girls showing up in floaty or maxi dresses, hotpants with tights underneath (look like a toilet accident waiting to happen) and what turned out to be a bridesmaid dress Hmm bet her mum was pleased as punch when she saw her DD's spag bol smeared down the ivory bodice...

Oh, and a pair of sparkly red shoes with 1 and half inch heels had to be confiscated from one little girl few weeks ago because all the girls were fighting over them!

mitochondria · 01/09/2010 20:44

Ones that got dirty - as everyone else has said! With a spare set for if he got too dirty before the end of the session.

There was a little girl who used to wear white lacy dresses and sparkly shoes with beautifully curled hair.

Not a problem with small boys - although apparently mine used to go for the Princess option from the dressing-up-box.

MumNWLondon · 01/09/2010 20:47

tracksuit trousers and cheap t-shirts.

I have had my 2 DC in 4 different nurseries over the past 4 years and belts and tights generally not encouraged as hard for toilet.

carriedababi · 01/09/2010 22:02

compo, ihate it when people recognise me from the titles! Grin
thanks for the advice, i never normally get trackie bottoms for her, but i'll buy some followng your advice, i genrally don't put her in anything i'd mind getting ruined, and she doesn't wear long dresses or long skirts so other than trackies just what she normally wears really.

she does try to get me to buy her those red sparkly healed shoes and i refuse.

thanks for the help
