to think the Great British Bake off made baking sound terrifying?!

Watched last night and love it, but occurred to me when they describe all the potential pitfalls of each kind of baking that if I hadn't done it before I might be a bit put off? I def thought bread making sounded far too complicated. I guess they're trying to big up baking as a skill, which I applaud but it is possible to start without a degree in molecular gastronomy!

Oh yes it is a bit serious isn't it. My victoria sandwich sponge mix always curdles - it doesn't matter how slow I add the egg. But they'd have you think it would be like eating a brick but its still light, moist and fluffy so who knew.

It is pretty serious if you do patisserie at college level - but then you'd expect it to be.

Home baking - not so much. Its hard to make a really awful cake unless you have a proper dogey oven.

Apart from the mars bar bun things, I thought it all looked great, but silver fox man is deeply scary!

Eglu · 01/09/2010 13:09

Must agree re: sponge mix curdling. It really does not make a bad cake, if it curdles a bit.

littlebylittle · 01/09/2010 13:16

and the main thing about home baking is that usually you're doing it for friends and family - I'd be scared to make something like that competitive. Not that you shouldn't and I'd love to win, just would add performance anxiety to something that is relaxing at the mo.

Silver fox man is scary! I felt sorry for beardy man who got thrown out, - he'd been good up until last night. Whereas bald competitive bloke has only ever been mediochre. [over involved emoticon]

This programme is strangely addictiveBlush

I feel I ought to stand up & say "My name´s diddl & I watch TGBBO"Grin

Was a bit sorry to see that guy go last night as I thought his buns were better than Jas´s!!??

Miranda irritates the crap out of me.

littlebylittle · 01/09/2010 13:29

am i being dense or not listening properly - who's silver fox man? I kind of want to be Miranda and then kind of don't because she is a bit too good to be true. (From appearances on telly anyway). Bald man should go I'm afraid. Wow - this is BB for bakers!

When did Mel and Sue lose their quirky appeal and turn into middle aged blando types with no humour or fun to their presenting style?

It's odd.

And they have lost all their chemistry - in fact on camera they don't even look at each other, far less interact or have a laugh.

I suspect mutual distrust and career envy :)

KurriKurri · 01/09/2010 13:38

Silver fox man is the 'expert baker' judge little. Is Miranda the blonde woman or the dark haired one?, - which one said she'd shove it in the bread maker at home? - I liked her!

DD and I laugh over the little info. bits between rounds. I love job titles like 'bread historian'Grin

MorrisZapp · 01/09/2010 13:39

Mary Berry is basically god.

diddl · 01/09/2010 13:41

Miranda is the blonde one with the teeth

Dark haired one said she would use the machine at home.

Lovecat · 01/09/2010 13:52

I got invited to apply for this via my local amdram group - I suppose they thought we'd make good telly - however me and the other lady who bakes had no 'funny' baking-related anecdotes to offer on our application forms so we never made it... what a pity :o

EgyptVanGogh · 01/09/2010 22:28

I was LMAO at Mel absentmindedly eating Miranda's chocolate. WTF?

Baldy 'entrepreneur' - overcomplication distracting from mediocrity, classic tale.

Miranda just has to be a MNer. Don't you think?
