To use the DC's "old" trainers for PE?

DS1 and DS2 both have trainers which still fit them but are very scuffed and grubby looking, with worn soles. They have new trainers for wearing at weekends, but I am tempted to put their old ones in their PE bags to use in school. PE is only 1hr a week. AIBU to do this, or should I use their new ones (running the risk that they will be left in school and so they have to wear their school shoes at weekends) or buy another new pair each?

(FWIW I have just put both pairs in the washing machine, which might kill the trainers and/or the machine, or possibly both, solving the problem instantly...)

No, this is exactly what you should do! Old ones for school, new ones for home. Then you will never forget to take them in on the right day, and they will never forget to bring them home for the weekend. Job done.

They don't have a gym hall. In good weather PE is outside, in bad weather it is in the school hall (which doubles as the dinner hall) and they don't wear shoes.

That was my thinking Rather.

The new trainers will be scuffed and worn within weeks anyway, I only bought the "old" ones at Easter.

and don't forget domesticsluttery, that if there is a Christmas production, special assembly etc PE is cancelled anyway!!

I buy DD cheap trainers for school - this years were £5 from Asda. She always forgets to bring her PE kit home, so I buy a cheap pair for school and a decent brand for her to wear at home.

AgentZigzag · 31/08/2010 16:45

Just bung 'em in the washer, who cares what they think at school, you're not going to be there Grin

brassband · 31/08/2010 16:46

they won't wear trainers on gym apparatus surely?

domesticsluttery · 31/08/2010 16:47

I'm not keen on them wearing non leather shoes, and it is hard to find cheap leather trainers.

DS1 is a crafty beggar and tends to change into his trainers as soon as he gets to school on PE days (they aren't supposed to wear them but the teachers do turn a blind eye, I prefer him to wear his school shoes though) so he could end up wearing them all day. I wouldn't be happy if he was wearing synthetic trainers for that long.

AFAIK they are only for outdoors Grin

Sounds like a great idea to me, if they still fit why not, better than those stupid black pumps my Dd3 has to wear.

Ideal for running cross country and the like. Football/rugby/hockey will be in boots surely? Are you sure they do all indoor PE with nothing on their feet? Might be worth including a pair of plimsolls just in case?

domesticsluttery · 31/08/2010 17:04

The DC are only in Yrs 2 and 3.

I bought plimsolls when DS1 started and they were never worn, so I haven't bothered since.

They have football boots for football and hockey, but they are after school activities and not done during normal PE lessons.

Ah, I see! In Yrs 2 and 3, my DC didn't have PE kit, much less PE shoes!

BarefootShirl · 31/08/2010 17:16

I bought DD plimsolls when she first started but as soon as she found out that she could do PE in bare feet she never wore them so I haven't bothered since. DS has an oldish pair of trainers for outdoor games - usually covered in mud!
