To think Landlord should've replaced our cooker by now?

It's 5 weeks tomorrow since they came around to measure up for a new one. AIBU in thinking it should've been replaced as we don't have use of an oven?

How can I go about complaining, I don't want to fall out with them? Hmm

They may have had to order one in to fit the space. So I guess the time isn't that unreasonable but what is is not keeping you informed as to when you can expect it.

What have they said? And do you have other coking facilities like hob / microwave?

mampam · 31/08/2010 09:37

Yes we have the hob but I find it really hard to think of a variety of meals that can solely be cooked on the hob alone without using the oven, especially with 2 dc's to feed.

They said 2/3 weeks.

Just looked on the Curries website and you can get cheap cookers, delivered within 4 days for free!!

Ask for an update, pointing out that you would like to make some different food, entertain, and so on. It's quite acceptable, as well, to point out that you have looked at Curry's and the delivery times are very short. Nothing rude about that at all.

However, as we're talking honestly here, are you afraid they are short of money and trying to "save up" for the cooker?

If tey said 2-3 weeks then I would have been in touch with them on the dot of 3 weeks to ask where it was.

Have you asked them what is the hold up? Agree it sounds a lot of they had said that initially. Also although you have found ones on Curries they might not fit the gap (trying to give your landlords some slack -adn having had experiences of landlords taking 3 months to sort out hot water during the winter once I am not sure why!!!)

mampam · 31/08/2010 14:18

No they are definitely not short of money, so I don't think saving up is the problem.

I think the problem is the same as it normally is when we need something done, they draught in friends to do it cheaply or for free so we then go straight to the bottom of the list. An electrician friend of the LL is going to fit it so I guess if he's going to make little or no money out of it then it's not a top priority for him.

Last summer, for example, LL had the house painted and guttering and fascia boards replaced by a firm owned by someone he's friends with. The scaffolding went up in July, the workmen would come for an hour or two, here and there between their other jobs. We couldn't use our drive or even leave a window open when we went out, plus we share a drive with our next door neighbours so they didn't have use of it either. The scaffolding went down over 12 weeks later! And just to rub it in our next door neighbour had their house painted, new fascias and guttering as well as new double glazed windows put in whilst we had our scaffolding up. Their's was up and down within 2 weeks!!!!

Think I need to get DH to phone them up, if I do it I'll get irrate and narky with them!! It's not cheeky is it to ask what the hold up is?

Of course it's not cheeky! You are putting things on hold to await the resolution of this.

"friends to do it cheaply or for free so we then go straight to the bottom of the list. An electrician friend of the LL is going to fit it so I guess if he's going to make little or no money out of it then it's not a top priority for him."

So true! And very unprofessional, in every way.

Have just had a phonecall from LL who has said he hasn't done anything about our cooker yet!! He's chosen one he thinks will be alright so can we go onto internet check the dimensions etc and let him know the he'll order it. He had absolutely no sense of urgency at all.

The joys of renting!

That's awful mampam. When our tenant's cooker blew up (honestly exploded), we were on to managing agents and builder who installed it every day trying to sort it out. There were issues between the manufacturers saying it was down to the installation, and the builder saying it was down to the manufacturers. In the end it took about two weeks to replace, which we felt awful about, so we gave the tenant a discount for that period. After all, he didn't have full use of everything we'd claimed the flat was equipped with.

So no, I don't think you're being cheeky at all just to chase it.

What does your contract say about this sort of thing?
Do you think it may be worth asking the CAB if they have any advice as to how to get this situation moving. I'm sure if it were the LL waiting for YOU to do something there would not be a 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 'whatever', 'whenever' attitude?

mampam · 03/09/2010 19:29

Think DH is on the case now! He's a bit narked about LL's lack of urgency attitude.

YANBU at all!
Contact CAB or check out the Shelter website. You can send a letter stating that you will be with-holding rent after a certain time if it is not replaced.

Good luck - landlords have always been shite in my experience too Angry

pluperfect · 05/09/2010 22:26

Yes, yes, MamaChris, a former landlady of mine gave me a hefty discount for the period the boiler was leaking in the winter! She replaced it as soon as she could, while I ran it as little as I could, in order to not have the drips overflowing the plate I had put underneath. I was really moved to co-operate because she had always done right by me and my flatmate, as quickly as possible.
