It is actually illegal, though not many people realise. The law was bought in when TB was much more widely spread because spitting one of the ways it can be passed as it's an airbourne infection. This is why TB is on the rise again, in inner cities, people are spitting in confined areas allowing the infection to spread.

They need to start fining people again because it's bloody grim, unhygenic and a health risk.

I also think footballers who spit make it seem acceptable to young boys...i'm sure that playing sports is no excuse...we never used to gob on the field when playing hockey, netball or tennis at school...just imagining the teachers(and school friends)reaction if someone had!..eeewwww

One I've thought about. I spit when I'm playing football or running sprint drills. The reason being that when you are breathing so hard and rapidly to try and swallow as often as you are producing saliva messes up your breathing rhythym. However if I'm training in doors I wouldn't . so I've always wondered if it is a psychological thing or if it's the fact that I only compete outdoors so am naturally going to be running harder and faster than when I am in doors.

vile absolutley no need Angry

kreecherlivesupstairs · 31/08/2010 09:47

OP, I am with you. DD was running around a park a couple of weeks ago. She fell over and skidded in a pool (or at least a lot) of phlegm. Her clothes went into the nearest bin. I am actually heaving as i type this.

smellmycheese · 31/08/2010 11:37

Eww it's so vile! There's absolutely no need for it. I'm sure people do it just to look obnoxious

ShrimpOnTheBarbie · 31/08/2010 11:41

It is VILE! And I say this as someone who ran 10 k this morning with a cold and could very easily have done so - but chose not to. Because I am not feral. And because there is no actual reason to do so. If I need to use the toilet, I find one - i don't go in the street. If I need to clear my nose I find a tissue, I don't go in the street!

Poledra · 31/08/2010 11:48

It's disgusting. My grandfather suffered from pneumoconiosis, emphysema and had had TB. He did often have to clear phlegm, but always used a tissue.

ccpccp · 31/08/2010 11:58

Footballers have made this common, and dare I say it, foreign ones are the worst. In some countries spitting is socially acceptable.

I've seen people gobbing on the floor in supermarkets. Its revolting.
