to stare out of kitchen window with a dreamy look on my face and a lump in my throat

This Evening radio 2 played the top 100 million selling singles and the no 1 was Candle in the wind which was Elton Johns tribute to Princess Diane
I have not heard this song for 12 yrs and it brought back many strange memories of a strange week
I remember walking through the village to my mums on the day of her funeral and it was deserted (no cars, empty shops) and who still remembers Eltons twitching eyebrow as he played the song at her funeral

Incidentally, I was on holiday in Greece at the time of saint Di's funeral. I remember being happy because all of the Brits on the piss wanted to watch it on the telly in the bar thus leaving the pool empty.

Jasonthunderpants · 30/08/2010 20:34

sorry cupcakes
I couldnt resist

I can't really hold a grudge. Not when D H is refusing to kiss me on account of my olive eating (he hates olives) :-(

thumbwitch · 30/08/2010 20:39

A lump in your throat? You saddo.

Candle in the Wind was a great song sadly mauled for the sake of Diana, IMO. I was working on the day of her funeral along with 2 like-minded colleagues - we missed the whole thing.. I had to switch the radio off for the entire week - couldn't cope with the maudlin drivelling.

cupcakesandbunting · 30/08/2010 20:45

No flaming from me, Thumbwitch.

Is it just me or was it only a certain type of person that actually mourned Diana? How can you give that much of a crap about someone you don't know?

thumbwitch · 30/08/2010 20:47

I was actually a little surprised at some of my friends' responses - some not at all (the sappier ones) Grin - they didn't previously strike me as the sort of people who would be so upset over her death.

Quattrocento · 30/08/2010 20:48

I did remember that there was an undertone of protest at Diana's death. All those flowers, mass hysteria sadness, but underneath that a smidgeon of disapproval at the monarchy.

Unfortunately they are still in place though.

cupcakesandbunting · 30/08/2010 20:55

I think that they had a bit of a cheek turning up at her funeral.

I wonder if there was a scrap at the buffet afterwards between the Windsors and the Spencers?

emmyloulou · 30/08/2010 20:58

It's probably more to do with taking you back all that time rather than her death, music can do that to people.

It was one fo those where were you moments, I was in Paris, and it was only when we went to the Eiffel Tower we realised as the tunnel was just down from there.

cupcakesandbunting · 30/08/2010 21:02

When she actually died, I was in bed sleeping off the beer. My mum rang me, sobbing. I thought my gran had died. Was most annoyed when it was not gran but Diana.

Jasonthunderpants · 30/08/2010 21:03

emmyloulou
Thats right. I havnt heard the song for 12 years and it just took me back to a strange week.As I have said I didnt really care about her
The mood of the country was totally different for that week

cupcakesandbunting · 30/08/2010 21:03

Annoyed that my mum woke me up to tell me about Diana, not annoyed that my gran hadn't died Blush

thumbwitch · 30/08/2010 21:11

cupcakes - I too was sleeping off the effects of a heavy night out in Ireland - my friend burst into my room at 11am in a right state and I remember sitting bolt upright in bed thinking that a bomb must have gone off somewhere when in fact it wasn't anything like that serious - then flopping back into bed to sleep some more. I was most put out to come down a bit later to find said friend and other friend weeping, wailing and rending garments over the situation. Hmm

gtamom · 30/08/2010 21:11

Yanbu. Music does remind of of things, I also think of her when I hear that song. I am not an Elton fan so only occasional will hear it somewhere, on someone else's radio.
Are you other people saying you didn't feel sad when Diana was killed?

gtamom · 30/08/2010 21:12

Excuse my wording, I cut and pasted "messily"

cupcakesandbunting · 30/08/2010 21:18

Drama queens eh, thumbwitch? :)

it's also a pretty shit song. Sorry!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 30/08/2010 21:21

I was 10 the day Diana dies, i was having emergency surgery for a shattered wrist and elbow, i had just got to sleep in agony when some bitch nurse woke me up to tell me about Diana.... i didn't care tbh.

tethersend · 30/08/2010 21:27

Didn't Mother Theresa die around the same time? Elton John recorded a song for her too, you know: Sandal In The Bin.

RunawayWife · 30/08/2010 21:29

I thought her death was heartbreakingly sad for her children.
I was in London the week of her funeral and it was a surreal experience.
The death of a mother of young children is always sad (unless she was some low life no mark child beating junkie)

MarineIguana · 30/08/2010 21:30

I woke up that morning from a dodgy one-night-stand with the brother of a friend (not something I ever made a habit of I'll have you know, but I was on the rebound). Among all the awkwardness of saying farewell to this bloke I barely knew, this bombshell news came on the radio. I was really sad for her poor sons. But as for candle in the wind, I was most unimpressed that Elton couldn't pull his finger out and write her a new song, instead of rehashing one that was written for somebody else!

scottishmummy · 30/08/2010 21:32

rotten song, and i dont share your sentiment

SparklyJules · 30/08/2010 21:35

I reckon me and DH were the amongst the first people to hear of her accident and death as we were shagging in the car with the radio on after a party - it was the wee small hours of the morning. At first it was reported as her having a broken leg following a car accident and then it became more serious and then it was confirmed she had died.

I remember my mum being very upset and blaming the Queen and Prince Philip.

Ever since I have avoided saying exactly where I was/what I was doing (when asked in RL!).

fortyplus · 30/08/2010 21:44

I'm the same age as Diana so it touched a nerve for me - only because I also have two soms. But the wawkishness of that whole week was bizarre and sickening - the whole country seemed to have gone mad.

Need I remind anyone that there were four people in that car - and the only one wearing a seatbelt survived. They thought they were above everything and paid a terrible price - as did her children.

fortyplus · 30/08/2010 21:44

oops - mawkishness - not trying to make up new words..

scottishmummy · 30/08/2010 21:48

certainly wasnt a big deal in glasgow.was bemused at bbc et al coverage.some folk like to rubberneck and get histrionic.few weeks prior papers were slagging her off and her lifestyle and man choice
