Oh forgo to say in our local newsagents you can still get little sweets in a paper bag, they are not 1p though. My Dd3 loves to choose them, but never likes them when she tastes them. LOL.

I think some people have missed the point in taking bottles back to the shop. The point is we got money for doing so. Fizzy drinks were a rare treat in our house but we used to collect the empties from the park.

scottishmummy · 30/08/2010 20:04

but same ole pleasures remain, feed ducks, scooter, ice cream in park.they dont all stay indoors staring at a pc talkin to starngers (thats just mumsnet)

snorts at scottishmummy

OP, I'm not offended (or having a go, not really) I just hate the whole "these days", I don't know, "thing". Human nature doesn't change. There are bad things about living in 2010 and some great things. Praise God for free healthcare, the right to own property, the right to have supposedly the same rights as a man, for the fact that I can practise my own religion without fear of death, at least in the UK. And some other things are rubbish (nuclear war, pollution, ITV).

My point is, human nature doesn't change.

Will bow out now!

blimey how serious(not you SM) i was talking about the fun of returning pop bottles to the shop for money.
maybe it was more fun for me as we didn't have pop, so I helped friends and got a cut.

Actually, my kids have lots of fun collecting coke bottles atm, for the points. They found enough for the Mousetrap boardgame, and 2 dvds for us Grin Still going, but the promotion is petering out now.

mummytime · 31/08/2010 08:00

There seem to be a number of shops opening just to sell you sweets from jars in paper bags. We have one here now, on the trendy street near the restuarants. I think its cashing in on the nostalgia idea.
Not like the Sweet shop of Roald Dahl's childhood (as described in Boy), or mine which also sold newspapers, cigarettes and naff over priced toys.

invisibleink · 31/08/2010 08:10

LOL @ Littlesilver with nuclear war and ITV!

domesticsluttery · 31/08/2010 08:11

We went to an event over the summer where returned plastic glasses earned you 50p each! How much fun did my DC have collecting up all the empties from around the field Grin

I love the internet; saves time, money, and shoe leather. I was talking to DH the other day, about music on the net. Do you remember when, if you liked a chart record, you would stay glued to Radio 1 on a Sunday between 5-7, as that was the only time you could guarantee you'd hear it. Playing out in the garden on a summers day, you would hear an excited shout from inside 'Your records on the radio' and you would rush inside to hear it. I clearly remember the excitement as they did the chart rundown, and asking evryone to be quiet as I held a tape recorder up to the radiogram speaker to try and record it. I still have some of those tapes. Dad singing along, and Mum telling him 'shush' as we were recording it.
Nowadays kids bluetooth the latest hits around the playground. Does anyone feel a little sad that they miss out on that little tingle of anticipation, and joy on hearing a song they love?

Why do our children have to have childhoods just like ours to enjoy them? They will have memories just like we do and will be nostalgic for them when they are older just like we are. No big deal in my book.

My kids have lots of fun. They do some things that I used to do like making tents from sheets, they also have more toys than I did when I was young but they enjoy them too.

I don't feel sad for the childhood my kids are having. I think it is pretty wonderful actually :) I am certainly trying to make it as good as I can.
