In the local authority pool this afternoon there was a little girl (6 or 7), with pustules all over her arms. Saw her standing up and squeezing one, it burst, pus came out - her dad swam towards her and said

"do you want me to do that?"

She shook her head and kept squeezing. Standing in the pool!

I know the chlorine would kill most nasties but it just made me feel ergh

A while ago a young girl of about13 cut her foor pretty badly at the swimming pool and I was a bit disgusted to see the life guard swishing down the poolside with water to flush the blood back into the pool.i was told that I was BVU as the chlorine would kill anything.maybe so but still yuk!

grapeandlemon · 30/08/2010 07:52

DD was 3 before she went in a public pool and I sooo stand by that, and people dunk little 3 months olds in that shit. Yuk!

lolapoppins · 30/08/2010 08:05

This is why I have not set foot in a swimming pool since I was 7 years old and will never go near a swimming pool again as long as I live. A baby sneezed and his mother swished the big river of green snot into the water, ever since that day, even the thought of a pool has made me nauseaous. All that water in peoples mouths and then they spit it out...the stray hairs...yuk.

I used to get into terrible trouble for refusing to go to swimming lessons at school it caused me no end of problems but I cannot bring myself to share water with anyone, chlorinated or not.

Emo76 · 30/08/2010 09:50

YANBU that is disgusting and her dad shouldn't have encouraged it in a public pool. It;s not the little girls fault though I agree as she clearly hasn't been helped by her parents in understanding why it isn't appropriate.

QS · 30/08/2010 09:57

It is not the little girls fault.

I have not set foot in a swimming pools since I saw an elderly lady in the communal changing area with a large wound on her leg oozing green goo. She was chatting to her friends about how she had been on two courses of antibiotics already and nothing seemed to clear it up. And she went in the pool with out showering, green goo oozing from her. Angry

It?s definitely a bit gross to actually see something like that occurring, but honestly, the chlorine will make the water safe for users. I do think it?s a real shame, though, when people say they don?t take their children into a pool for this reason - it?s totally safe, and such a great and healthy activity for children and adults. The sooner babies are in the water, the better? and like anything, the more they?re exposed to chlorinated water, the less chance there is of them getting ill or having some kind of reaction

Desperatelyseekinginspiration · 30/08/2010 10:08

You should never squeeze pus filled pustules because of the danger of spreading infection. If they are around the mouth or nose, you run the risk of spreading the infection to your brain.

Obviously a child won't know any better. That's what parents are for Hmm.

breatheslowly · 30/08/2010 11:31

Ugg. I am not sure that chlorine kills things instantly, surely it takes a while.

FranSanDisco · 30/08/2010 11:40

My local pool is cleared if any child vomits during lessons. They then fish the vomit out with a giant ladle and wait 30 mins, testing the water regularly, to see if the water is OK. This suggests chlorine isn't an instant killer perhaps.

werewolf · 30/08/2010 13:53

When my kids came out the water after swimming lessons once, they told me they'd seen a poo on the bottom. I reported it and they cleared the pool of swimmers and closed it for an hour or so.

misdee · 30/08/2010 14:12

depends on the skin condition really.

i used to get hacked off at one pool which stated that people with eczema shouldnt be using the pool. and took dd1 in regardless.

NoahAndTheWhale · 30/08/2010 14:41

DD has molluscum and goes swimming. Wouldn't squeeze the spots though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/08/2010 15:51

pus in a pool

yes she can go swimming, the chlorine will kill anything Grin

no she shouldnt be squeezing the spots - as usual the parents are to blame - children learn from their elders and not her fault

my ex dc has pooed in the pool, was a toddler and was in a swim nappy, pool was closed and cleaned for an hour

i have seen a rounded bobbing turd in the carrribean waters - i avoided it Smile tho was at an adults only hotel, so no kids to blame lol

belgo · 30/08/2010 15:58

Agree with misdee, it does entirely depend on the skin condition.

I have also taken ds swimming despite his eczema. If people don't like it, then it's their problem. It's safe, not contagious but there will always be people who get grossed out even seeing these things from a distance.
