A whole avacado with little bits of fruit (blueberrys, pomegrenates, banana) and some milk. Shes 13 months. Weird i know but she loves it and would have it everyday if I gave it to her. But I limit it to those days when I cant be bothered to make a 'proper' lunch, which is like twice a week. I do feel guilty for not making something proper that consists of some carbs such as bread, pasta, rice etc.
What do you normally feed your DC for lunch? Looking for some easy ideas really

Sounds fine to me

mine have pasta, fishfingers, spag bol, etc for dinner

lunch is a sandwich or cheese on toast , sometimes an omlette

they are older though: 3 and 6 and would complain bitterly if faced with just fruit for lunch Grin
I love babies the age yours is, no moaning Grin

how is faffing around with all that extra fruit easier than doing a piece of toast - genuine question! toast and mashed banana or avocado would be fine, with a few blueberries afterwards

sounds healthy, but prhaps too much fruit in one go especially the fatty avocado, might upset her tummy

ham/chicken/cheese sandwhich with apple/banana/carrot/cumcumber on the side

glass of milk /water

macorini cheese

youghut

strawberries to dip into chocolate( for me of course!)

Not weird in Brazil apparently - avocados are mixed with milk and sugar there (I had a Brazilian neighbour - she could never get over 'savoury' avocados). Sounds healthy enough to me, to be honest, and it's about balance - and she's 13 months old. I really wouldn't worry about it unless she's fussy and refuses to eat other stuff.

PutTheKettleOn · 27/08/2010 13:05

nothing wrong with it but i would add some carbs like a slice of bread/some crackers as i'd be worried it's not filling enough.

I wish my DD1 age 2.4 would eat avocado - she used to as a baby. Now her lunch everyday is either a ham or cheese sandwich, followed by a banana or an apple. Long gone are the days when I tried to be creative with her diet, now I give her what I know she'll eat!

Some quick and easy lunches: Scrambled eggs are a fave with DS and dead quick to make, baked beans/tinned pasta shapes with bits of sausage or ham and cheese mixed in, a little plate of cold things chopped up like cucumber/tomato/cheese/smoked sausage/sweetcorn/etc with some toast, sandwich, leftovers from last nights dinner.

I wouldnt worry if it's just occasionally.

Every now and again DS (15 months) decides to refuse point blank to eat whatever lovingly prepared meal I present him with Grin in this case he often end up getting a dinnr consisting of purely fruit, yogurt and whatever other bits and bobs I can find in the fridge that dont require me to start cooking all over again...

Scrambled egg with pesto or cheese stirred through it & toast.
Chunky vegetable soup (I put all sorts in ours, takes 15-20 mins).
Avocado & fruit sounds lovely though.

petelly · 27/08/2010 14:40

I think that sounds very nutritious and healthy. Lots of carbs in the fruit. I wouldn't feel guilty at all!

ILoveDonaldDraper · 27/08/2010 15:08

It sounds fine and is healthy. Avocados have a lot of fat in them though - typically 30 grams, which is more than the RDA for a child of her age, so I would only give this to her occasionally, even if she would like it every day.
Its better than ham or cheese though, which are also very fatty but contain lots of salt and other nasties.

Mahraih · 27/08/2010 15:20

If my child likes that kind of food I'll be jumping for joy!

Would perhaps only give half an avocado though, and substitute something something else so there's more variety. Maybe some veg or a bit of chicken?

CakeandRoses · 27/08/2010 15:29

Sounds fine to me if all the fruit isn't upsetting her tummy.

DS's (22 months) fave quick lunch is pitta bread, humous, olives and cucumber.

Spatz · 27/08/2010 15:32

sounds fine to me too

DS ate avocado and banana mushed together 3 or 4 times a week at that age. Doesn't touch either now :o

womblingfree · 27/08/2010 19:21

I wouldn't worry about it personally, although I'd probably do half an avocado and a slice of bread

mumbar · 27/08/2010 19:28

You do not want to know what ds 6 had today Grin and not just for lunch Wink

violethill · 27/08/2010 19:38

Sounds fine, though I would probably give half an avocado, as a whole one is quite a lot of fat. Maybe a sandwich on the side?

ilovechocs · 27/08/2010 22:40

Thanks for your replies and for the ideas, will def try some of them.

She did have ready brek for breakfast and lamb risotto for dinner so I don't feel too bad now about not giving her a 'proper' meal for lunch.

I know a whole avacado sounds like a lot but it was quite small (those Sainsbury's basic ones) but next time I'll offer her some bread with it but not too sure if she'll have the bread. I actually think its great she loves avacados as she needs the fat, she's small for her age but to me its more of a side salad/dessert thing rather than a main meal.
