to be annoyed with this lorry parking in our road every day?

I genuinely can't decide whether I am or not.

One of our neighbours a couple of doors down must have recently become a lorry driver and he parks his lorry (big long-haul type thing) on the road every afternoon / evening. It's usually gone by the morning and then reappears sometime in the afternoon.

It blocks the road down to a single width. Is this ok to do with a commercial vehicle on a regular basis? On the one hand I don't mind as it acts as a bit of a traffic calming measure, but it's also annoying as it's right next to our drive so can be a bit awkward getting in sometimes and, dare I say it, spoils the view a bit! (no houses opposite, just fields). There's no pavement either so to walk past it you have to walk around it in the road.

There are no other cars parked on the road generally as everyone has drives but obviously he couldn't get his lorry on the drive.

It's branded with a haulage company name so presumably not his lorry. Shouldn't it be kept at their yard and he drive to the yard in the mornings in a car?

It's not a problem that's keeping me awake or anything but I heard someone shouting at him to get it off the road and banging on the side of the lorry yesterday which made me realise I'm not the only person bugged by it a bit.

There's not really anything I can do about it anyway, I'm not about to stick a note on his windscreen, but at the same time I really hope it's not still there if we ever want to sell our house.
Am I being a NIMBY?

Check out VOSA website and that will give you guidance about what to do. There are restrictions about lorries on highways overnight but certain rules apply.

Starbuck999 · 25/08/2010 16:01

Are there any parking restrictions there? If no then YABU, it's not illegal to block your view of the fields! Surely if it's there overnight and gone in the morning then it's blocking a night view of the fields- which I presume isn't such a great view anyway! Also, if there is no pavement then surely parking any car there would mean you need to walk onto the road to get round it, so the fact that it's a lorry doesn't really make a huge difference, does it?

Why don't you just go round there and talk to him if it bothers you that much. Although, not quite sure what you would say. "Excuse me - do you mind not parking your large lorry outside your house... it... er... block my view of the fields in the dark" ?!?

I think YABU, give the guy a break it's his new job and perhaps he is just keen to make his deliveries on time! My friend is a lorry driver and at the end of the day he sometimes collects the nexts day's load and drives home, then goes direct from home with it the next morning. If he is doing long distance the trip tot he yard and back may put him over his driving hours and mean he has to stay on the road overnight.

YANBU - it's very tiresome having HGVs parking outside your house.

Here's a document that I found.

I think you could stop this on the grounds that

  • it is causing an obstruction
  • it is parked on the verge
both illegal for HGVs.

You can also check with your council whether there are any specific Traffic Regualtion Orders applying to your area (prob unlikely unless this has been a problem in your road before) and or any specific conditions on the haulage company's operating licence relating to parking (eg their licence might specifically require them to park their lorries in their depot)

Well it's there from about 2pm, so not just in the dark, but the view bit was a bit off the cuff.
Yes a car would block just as much, but like I say there aren't cars parked on the road as a rule, hence the lorry sticking out like a sore thumb. It's not a problem just because it's a lorry, no.

No parking restrictions, no.

It's not bothering me that much either, as I said, so I certainly won't be knocking on his door about it, I was just wondering. It has been going on a few months now though so it's not temporary. The haulage company address on the side of the lorry is not very far away so it wouldn't be adding to his hours too much I wouldn't think, no doubt easier to just go straight out though, yes. Possible he hasn't got a car to want to drive to it every day too. I certainly don't want to see him out of a job or anything!

YANBU - it would irrationally irritate me.

scurryfunge · 25/08/2010 16:13

If it is a haulage company it is likely he has to park at the depot.

PrivetDancer · 25/08/2010 16:14

Interesting, stubbornhubby, thanks.
I'm not sure I'd want to report him though, would be worried about him losing his job..

YANBU. HGV's, high work vans etc all cause restricted views and often obstructions, which can be dangerous. I'm sure there are regulations re HGV's and stubbornhubby has given good pointers.

When we are pulling out of our side road onto a very busy main road these high vehicles parked along the road restrict our view of traffic so much we often have to push into the middle of the road to see what's coming.

princesspuds · 25/08/2010 16:18

I would be more concerned whether or not it actually obstructed the route of emergency vehicles, would it be difficult for an ambulance or fire engine to get past for example, if so then I would be tempted to report it to the company.

mrshess · 25/08/2010 16:20

As long as hgv is taxed and not causing an obstruction then it can be parked whereever.
My pet hate is people going on about parking in front of their houses, you can park as long as taxed and not blocking drives but people seem to think you cant park in front of their house

LostArt · 25/08/2010 16:22

One of my friends husband used to park his lorry outside their home (and one or two other peoples homes) in the evening. They eventually got a call from either the police or the council to tell them to move it. So it obviously wasn't there legally. That was in a housing estate though, i don't know if that makes a difference.

scurryfunge · 25/08/2010 16:23

Doesn't always apply to HGVs though mrshess, check VOSA website.

LaBellaSantaCatarinadiSienna · 25/08/2010 16:32

I know this is a bit different, but I live in a gated development of 8 houses and in the deeds for the house it states that no commercial vehicle over 2 tonnes can be parked in the car park. At least those measurements might give you a starting point?

PrivetDancer · 25/08/2010 16:47

You could definitely still get a fire engine past it. Does that mean it's not an obstruction?

I've got no idea what two tonnes of lorry looks like :)

the army trucks with benches through the middle you see troops sitting in, they are called four tonners hope that helps

DomesticG0ddess · 25/08/2010 18:28

It would really annoy me too, but I don't think he can't do it. Is there anywhere along the road where he could park where he wouldn't make it awkward for anyone going into their drive?

mumdrivenmad · 25/08/2010 18:30

oh just thought I'd add, my car is an Estima, and is 1.3 tonnes, so 2 tonnes is not that big a vehicle

DomesticG0ddess · 25/08/2010 18:30

"but I don't think he can't do it", I mean I don't think he is in the wrong - 7 1/2 months pg is obviously causing me to think like my 3 yr old and then type it straight out Hmm
