to think that £20 +£12 delivery is a lot to pay for cupcakes?

Brought to you by a "WTF?" I work in London and a work colleague bought cupcakes for her party, from a bakery called Lola's - £22 for the cakes and £12 for the delivery!

Am I the only one who thinks this is MAD to pay for some cakes and surely they could go in the post?

It all depends on how many cupcakes there were. Two dozen? That's fine. A half dozen? Madness.

2rebecca · 24/08/2010 22:11

If people are prepared to pay that much it's not mad but appropriate pricing for the market.
I wouldn't pay that. Cup cakes are just Americanised fairy cakes. Agree number of cupcakes is relevent.

StuckInTheMiddleWithYou · 24/08/2010 22:12

That's £34 for cakes. There must be at least 34 cakes?

I bloody hate cupcakes.

QS · 24/08/2010 22:13

The going rate for proper cupcakes these days is between £3.50 and £4 per cupcake.
If they are hand crafted and individually made.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/08/2010 22:14

Hmm. A picture is needed here.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/08/2010 22:15

Ohh, these are lush!

I'd pay £34 for them.

NeverPushWhenItSaysPull · 24/08/2010 22:15

Seriously? I've been giving them out for nothing at birthday parties.

Am going to introduce a cover charge at the next DCs function. Grin

QS · 24/08/2010 22:15

Jane Asher charges £4 per bespoke cupcake.

here

It is a shame I need 80 cupcakes.

whatagradeA · 24/08/2010 22:16

Google it. They're beautiful and they're £2.25 each. Not bad..

cakewench · 24/08/2010 22:16

I'd have to know how many cakes, I suppose.

but.. the post?? You're suggesting they go in the post? It would be icing everywhere! (assuming they're American cupcakes with mounds of buttercream frosting etc)

laumiere · 24/08/2010 22:16

10 cakes at £2.25 per cake (plus the delivery charge). I think the charge is the Hmm bit for me! Apparently you can pick them up next time you're in Selfridges (and who isn't always popping in?)

QS where do you buy these proper cakes? I wanna see!

wildfig · 24/08/2010 22:17

You can't post cupcakes with buttercream frosting - the icing would go all squashy and clag up the lid of the box. If it was in London, it means sticking the cupcakes on the back of a courier bike and biking them round, hence the £12 charge.

No, it's not really value for money, but the 'oooh!' rating is pretty high on Lola's Cupcakes. They're v pretty. I suppose what you're paying is an 'ooh!' tax, on top of your basic 50p cake value.

Now, £4.95 postal delivery charge for Hotel Chocolat seems a bit steep to me, but on the plus side, it's saved me from several lardy hip disasters impulse buys.

laumiere · 24/08/2010 22:18

Hmm I wonder if Jane actually makes them!

QS · 24/08/2010 22:18

Thanks for the link to Lolas bakery.

Loshad · 24/08/2010 22:19

but they are horrid to actually eat - far too much icing, and even at £2.25 each they're a lot of money for a basically a pile of sugar.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 24/08/2010 22:19

Nooo, I am being tormented with cake!! Sad

laumiere · 24/08/2010 22:21

I like the idea of an 'oooh' tax!

OP posts:
laumiere · 24/08/2010 22:23

Loshad I haven't tried a Lola (or a Jane for that matter) but I must admit to a bit of Shock at the prices of 'high end' cupcakes!

I do very beautiful bespoke cupcakes for £1.00-£2.00 each with free local delivery in returnable boxes. And I make a respectable profit.

God knows how much these people are making!

consumerofladypetrol · 24/08/2010 22:26

oooo loving Lola's cupcakes, but have a feeling that if I can get rid of entertain DD for an afternoon I could do something similar for a lot cheaper than £34.

If anyone fancies I can put them in Royal Mail special delivery and have a mushy but yummy mess delivered to your door inside a week Grin

splashy · 24/08/2010 22:27

Humingbird cupcakes are lush :)

Got them for my wedding and they were far cheaper, and tastier, than a traditional cake :)

seeker where are you based?

OP posts:
kickassangel · 24/08/2010 22:41

round here cupcakes cost $2.50, cheaper by the dozen. i have worked out that i can make about 4 dozen in a day (about $80 income) with ingredients costing about $15.

an income of $65 per day seems quite good to me, i am seriously tempted!
