to find this way of talking odd

'come to mummy' 'mummy doesn't want you to do that, does she' when a person is talking about themself?

Is it not really confusing for children?

We never do that with anyone other than small children, do we?

(or am I just odd?)

I was at a birthday party with a bunch of 3yos on Sunday
was offered a plate of cakes and nearly said 'well done, what lovely sharing' till I realised it was one of the dads holding them...

missmoopy · 24/08/2010 21:22

I sometimes still do that and dd is almost 6!

Psychologists call this baby language "motherese" and think it might help babies learn to speak. Given that very small babies don't really understand that they are separate from their mothers it makes sense to not say "I" as this is quite confusing itself - am I "I" or are you "I" - it depends who is talking. Obviously it might linger a bit too long in some cases.

Hairytriangle... perhaps the midwife was trying to be clever. You know, 'call her Mum, focus her on the goal' kind of thing.

Or perhaps she just couldn't be arsed bothered to learn her patient's names and called them all 'Mum'. T'is an easy cop-out, that's for sure. Grin

On another note, my DH swore he wasn't going to use 'gaggagoo' as he calls it.

Our DD is 7 months, and guess what... 'Who's a good baba, good girl DD, come to Daddy!'

Hilarious!

flootshoot · 25/08/2010 16:28

my mum still calls my dad 'Dad'. She even corrects herself if she uses his name when talking to me (suprisingly after 30 years, I know who she means....!). She is bats though.

missmoopy · 25/08/2010 16:30

flootshoot, my Mum does the same, so funny! I have pointed out that I know his name, but to no avail! My Mum is bats too.

Right, I take it ALL back. I am visiting my Bro, SIL and lovely, lovely nearly two year old neice.

I am speaking 'Auntiese' - "Bring it to Hairytriangle", "Shall Hairytriangle do that?"

I am now convinced that it's definatley something instinctive to do :)

Typical post I guess from someone 'looking in from the outside' and then getting some perspective when on the 'inside' LOL
