Are you a fronter or a reverser ?

Last week we were out for a walk, when a near neighbour reversed straight out almost into us.
I had to pull our 8 yo away and slap the back of their Audi.

When the driver realised the situation he was naturally apologetic.
We didn't make a big deal, but when I suggested that it was best to "reverse in, and drive out", rather than "drive in, and reverse out" and that then such accidents/incidents would be significantly less frequent, I was met with rather a blank look and told politely that he would of course do his best to be careful, but otherwise it wasn't really my business which way he parked his car.

I feel that in 90+% of driveways, it is very definitely safer to "reverse in and drive out", and that safety is everyones' business. Clearly, however, as a "reverser" I am in the minority as I've noticed since that about 75% of people round our way are "fronters", many in driveways where it is clearly IMHO dangerous.

C'mon all you "fronters" I really want to know what your opinion/excuse about this is!

Is nobody else sniggering at sloanypony, third post in, with "I'm a fronter because of bush positioning"?

Livingbytheriver · 25/08/2010 23:06

I think it was a big wet bush actually molly. Yes I did laugh.

I reverse like to reverse park everywhere, I usually get half way through my manoeuvre and remember that I have a double buggy in the boot so have to faff about and front in so I can get to the boot. I bet I look like a right twonk to anyone watching.

I never used to think about this at all until we got the f*ing great big van to fit all the kiddies into, and I realised the window was so far up I could run over several small children and their mothers before I felt the bumps and stopped! So now I 'reverse in' whenever possible, and often go right to the back of the car park so I can have a nice big space and room to get out without worrying!
But, cumfy, I think yabu to say it so bluntly to your neighbour.

BitOfFun · 25/08/2010 23:26

I think all people should have double-entry driveways so you can just drive in one side and out the other.

Scuttlebutter · 26/08/2010 00:14

As a general rule, I always reverse into our drive (as the rather squashed lavender bush will attest), and drive out. I also do this in car parks. Was taught this on a personal safety course many years ago, and have also spent a number of years driving vans that had no rearview through doors so relied entirely on side mirrors - excellent practice for improving my reversing. In general, is safer and easier. But think YABU to lecture neighbour on his parking. Smile

I am totally anal about this and always reverse park, everywhere."

I reverse into every parking space. I find it easier.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 26/08/2010 01:14

I am a fronter.

But if we're talking parking them I'm a pedestrian.

Tarenath · 26/08/2010 21:49

I always drive in forwards and reverse out. We live right on top of a roundabout and it's the only safe way to do it. It's a busy road and I can't just stop in the middle of the road to do a major reversing maneuver.
I would cause more of a hazard reversing into my driveway than I do reversing out it. Reversing out I can see both ways up the road before I leave the driveway and it's much safer and quicker to just reverse out and go.

skintbint · 26/08/2010 21:55

drive in, reverse out.

but we haven't got a driveway.

i am utterly shite at reversing and it would be far more dangerous for me to attempt to reverse into a parking space in any normal situation (supermarket/ hospital/ library)

i'd definitely hit other cars despite having taken 8 or 9 attempts to miss them.

most pedestrians spot me a mile off however, so i've never actually hit a person.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 26/08/2010 22:08

I was taught that you should always reverse into a space - less chance of problems such as the OP's, also in winter windows might be misted up & it's easier then to drive out rather than try to reverse without visibility.

However, two problems - 1) in the supermarket, reversing in means leaving the trolley at the front of the car & squeezing through with everything (or risk hitting your own/another car with the trolley as can't drive that properly, and 2) Have difficulty reversing Blush.

Actually, the day I drove into a multi-storey and reversed into a space without consciously thinking about it was the day I knew I'd cracked driving! (It was last year and I'd been driving for 19 years Blush)

TiggyD · 26/08/2010 22:51

I always thought it was illegal to reverse form a smaller road/drive onto a larger one.

If you ever do something in a car that involves 'going for it' and hoping everybody else sees you, works out what you're doing and gets out the way, you shouldn't be doing it.

TiggyD · 26/08/2010 22:55

And if this thread had been about sex: I'm a fronter AND reverser. Sometimes I don't go in at all and stick it on the road instead.

Think I'm getting muddled up now.

jomorgan · 27/08/2010 16:41

I sooo love this post...espec Mollychambers idea of installing a turntable, which has literally made me howl with laughter (complete with tears!).

For the record, when it comes to my drive, i actually have a drive in, drive out drive (like a semi circle) so i am lucky enough not to have all these problems!

However, when parking in carparks or other peoples drives, I always drive in and reverse out. My dad tells me off all the time, as its not the 'correct' and 'logical' way, bt im soo apalling at reversing, there is no way im risking it! (for the sake of my car, other cars, and of course my dignity!)
