this woman is considered a plus size model?

She's normal ffs. What does this say to young girls if someone this size is considered to be plus size?

"linkwww.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1305494/Americas-Next-Top-Model-plus-size-winner-flaunts-curves-naked-ad-campaign.html"

she's the one at the front btw

Technically she is :( Unfortunately.

She has a lovely figure though Envy

paisleyleaf · 23/08/2010 23:54

She's considered plus size by the Daily Mail.

OMG at that small waist pic lower down.

splashy · 23/08/2010 23:59

not just daily mail which classes her as plus size unfortunately.

though i agree that dm's content can be dubious

I remember her on the show. She looked a lot bigger then, so I reckon one of the following:

she has succumbed to the usual pressure and lost weight since the show

lots of airbrushing is being used

or.... The most likely.... She's exactly the same size but just looked a lot bigger on the show as she was standing next to a group of women made entirely of bone and skin! Seriously, where do these models keep their internal organs??

DetectivePotato · 24/08/2010 09:36

I'm a size 12 (or I was before baby bump) and I was shocked to read recently that I would be considered a plus size model.

Bloody shocking really as I'm actually pretty happy with my figure and don't consider it to be a plus size at all.

My friends and I were discussing it before and their DH's were all saying that size 12 is the ideal, anything smaller is a bit too thin. 10 probab'y wouldn't be too bad but we were discussing my friends sister who is a size 8 and taller than me (I'm 5'7) and she looks way too thin.

smellmycheese · 24/08/2010 09:56

potato, it's unbelievable isn't it?!

I'm a size 18 and I find it really offensive that a size 12 is considered plus size! (as the size 12 women do too I'd imagine)

what would I be then? Gigantasaurous size?

I'm losing weight at the moment, and to think I could slog my guts out for the next year, get down to a lovely size 12, and still be 'plus size' is a bit depressing Sad

SagacityNell · 24/08/2010 10:03

She will be an American 12 which is a UK16.

I hate when UK papers use US sizing to shock readers. They do it with size 0 all the damn time.

smellmycheese · 24/08/2010 10:10

Sagacitynell, I agree that papers do do that, but it is true that a uk size 12 woman, in the fashion and modelling world, is classed as plus size. Even in this country! It's ridiculous IMO

Mahraih · 24/08/2010 10:11

UK Size 12 and above is, unfortunately, considered plus-size. But it's a very in-proportion size-12 with good muscle tone and a lot of height, so it looks smaller than it is. Even at a plus-size, your body has to be 'perfect'!

Thing is, it has to be labelled something and the best thing is to take it with a pinch of salt. As someone who modelled for a bit, I'm glad that there is opportunity for people who aren't very skinny to model, and be used for campaigns.

The fashion and media are such that they will never allow people to just be people - normal 'people' don't sell, but at least this is drawing attention to 'plus size' modelling.

DetectivePotato · 24/08/2010 10:13

If my arms and ankles were any thinner, they would bloody disappear too. I just have a slightly curvy body with big boobs. Pretty pleased with it really!

CerealOffender · 24/08/2010 10:17

i think the phrase 'plus size' is hideous. but she is plus size.

PawMum · 24/08/2010 10:18

I imagine she is a size 16 if she is very tall but you can tell those pics have been airbrushed

she looks lovely though

Shirleyhandmaidenofthegibbet · 24/08/2010 10:21

A toned size 12 looks great - much better than an untoned size 10. iS UK size 12 really plus size?

CerealOffender · 24/08/2010 10:22

there is no reason why a size 16 woman can't look lovely! she is probably quite tall. i think you can get away with this when you are young but when it all starts to sag you tend to look like a bag of spuds (bitter experience)

that daily mail site is like crack. i can't stop being sucked into the vacuous stories about women in bikinis.

BaggedandTagged · 24/08/2010 10:25

Why do people find this so shocking? They are not saying that at size 12 she is plus size; simply that she is large for a model, which she is. Most catwalk models are size 8 max and above average height.

This has been the case for as long as I can remember so it's not exactly new news.

Also, remember, designers dont want you to look at the models, thinking "oh, she's pretty"- they want you to look at the clothes, and more androgneous models achieve this aim better.

Supercherry · 24/08/2010 10:44

Agree with Baggedandtagged- it's only plus size within that industry. She is undoubtedly gorgeous anyway, whatever her size.

It's just fashion modelling isn't it? I think the general consensus is that the clothes hang better on bony bodies. The women don't actually look any better for being so thin but the theory is that the clothes do, which is ultimately what is being sold.

So size 12 isn't the norm in this type of modelling but it is pretty normal everywhere else.

Whatever the statement when it comes to a woman's size/weight- there is always the potential to offend someone.

Detectivepotato- I'm a size 6/8 and nearly 5ft6 I probably do look too thin sometimes and according to your friend's DHs probably unnattractive. I'm not offended though because I know you didn't mean it in that way. See what I mean though? There's always the potential to offend someone.

wingandprayer · 24/08/2010 10:51

What I object to most actually is the mock lesbian posing of the two 'plus size' models. Is that really neccessary? Surely the whole point of campaign would be far more effective without having to bring a pornagraphic element into it? Or so they believe that 'big' girls are only attractive in sexual context?

BaggedandTagged · 24/08/2010 10:57

Yeah, I thought the mock lesbianism was a bit weird as well. Plus those photos are SO airbrushed it's untrue.

Surely if it's all about "bigger girls are beautiful too" then they should have done the airbrushing more subtley.

PawMum · 24/08/2010 11:00

The reason designers and especially high end fashion labels do not like designing or manufacturing clothes for larger women is because whenn wom,en get over a certain size (an old uk size 14) they put weight on in very different areas of their body. Some women put it on their bust more, other hips, other stomach or hips etc, but it is alot less (overall) hourglass than a woman who ius an old size 14 or less. So easier to make, fit and less wastage because clothes just don't fit curvier women correctly.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/08/2010 11:00

Why is this so shocking?

It is all based on clothes sizes, which in both US and UK have increased in recent times. So today's size 12 is far, far bigger than a size 12 would have been in the 70s.

I agree it is a misnomer when the papers started wringing their hands over sizes when it is evident that American sizes are used. So a 12 would be a 16. When everyone bangs on about teh size 0 nonsense they are actually meaning a US 0, which is a UK 4. Which, to be perfectly frank, is not necessarily hideously underweight. I imagine that a petite fine boned person could easily be a size 4 and perfectly healthy.

I am 6 foot and a size 8-10 - I would consider myself thin whatsoever. In reality I am probably an old size 12-14. It's just vanity sizing.

I also agree that a UK 12 is considered plus size, as the normal modelling size is a 6-8.

PawMum · 24/08/2010 11:01

and by that, I don't mean curvy women cannot get clothes to fit, but it is a more complicated criteria and high end design labels are just lazy and money hungry and completely and utterly vain

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/08/2010 11:02

I mean I would not consider myself thin.
