To move to Scotland?

We have sold our flat in london, we'll be moving out on Thursday. We've not found a house to move in to yet, but the options are to live in Scotland to live near DH's family or to move to the west country to be near my mum. We'll have to move in with Mum for a while as we'll be homeless.

We were buying a house near Mum but it fell through. Mum was delighted we were going there, and saw her future being near her grand children and with us nearby to help her with the house and garden.

DH has always wanted to go back to Edinburgh. This would be better for work for us probably and there is quite a lot to offer for DS as he grows up. I was always a concerned about moving so far away from my family, and wanted to be nearer Mum as she got older. Mum hates Edinburgh and has an unreasonable hatred of things Scottish due to a bad experience in her youth with an ex boyfriend. She swears she'll never visit.

AIBU to move there even though it would break Mum's heart?

You need quite a lot of cash to move to edinburgh, that's the thing.

scottishmummy · 23/08/2010 20:53

the new town and grange/morningside ££ all else affordable esp if moving from london.

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 20:53

Salt and sauce on your fish and chips just isn't right.

pointydog · 23/08/2010 20:54

London flat, didn't see that.

I'd disagree with all other areas being affordable though. Affordable to how many exactly?

Habbibu · 23/08/2010 20:57

Pshaw. Come and live in Fife. And meh to English bashing - been up here 20 years and never anything other than welcome. It's magic. Flights Bristol-Edinburgh pretty good, aren't they?

scottishmummy · 23/08/2010 21:00

pointy coming up from london most of edinburgh will be affordable to her.

and as for anyone else, well its all personal circumstance isnt it

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/08/2010 21:03

Salt and sauce are the DB's - nothing better than hot soggy chips covered in brown vinegary sauce. My mouth is watering here...

Actually, I confess - I've got a new contract at the west end of Glasgow near Kelvingrove Park, and I love it - weegies n all!

pointydog · 23/08/2010 21:04

yes, it is indeed personal curcumstance, it's just that the majority of people will not have the personal circumstance for many areas of edinburgh. But of course, moving from london will make thigns ok.

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:06

A fairy dies every time you put salt and sauce on your chips.

MichaelaFinnigan · 23/08/2010 21:06

I thought the west country would be better for me originally because I'd be nearer my family and in easy reach of all our friends in London. I can work in nearby cities like Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham, Oxford. It sounds fine. I don't have any friends there now though but in Edinburgh we'd have a ready made social life and not to mention DH's 3 brothers and sister and DS would have 8 cousins nearby. No cousins on my side of the family.

I'm in such a fluster about it I think I'll just have to let the best house decide. DH is being really reasonable about my and my mother's foibles, but he'd prefer Scotland.

And I quite like a white pudding supper with salt and sauce. I had one in Aberlady last week and it was yum.

i love salt an a sauce on chips.

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:08

Think of the fairies.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/08/2010 21:08

As long as it's a weegie fairy it's OK Grin

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:08

All fairies are Edinbuggers.

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:09

Actually in that case, make it a double helping of salt and sauce.Grin Down with fairies!

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:10

Michaela. You can make this decision based on the most important question.
How do you like your chips?

MichaelaFinnigan · 23/08/2010 21:10

OMG I never realised my house move would affect the fairies too. Perhaps I should stay in Gloucestershire and stick with salt and vinegar.

Things are more complicated than I could have imagined.

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:12

It's ok.They're Edinburgh fairies. No need to feel guilty.Grin

I'm craving chips now and I don't even like chips all that much.

Chips and curry sauce would be lovely right now, or chips and cheese.

MichaelaFinnigan · 23/08/2010 21:17

Do fairies die if you eat mushy peas? Is it just the brown sauce?

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 23/08/2010 21:18

chips and curry sauce mmmm student treat

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:19

Mushy peas are fine, perhaps even good for them. It's just the brown sauce.

scottishmummy · 23/08/2010 21:20

i like white puddin supper with curry sauce

Aitch · 23/08/2010 21:23

cousins swings it. i see how much joy my dds get from their cousin.

LetThereBeRock · 23/08/2010 21:25

I've never tried white pudding. Should I?

MichaelaFinnigan · 23/08/2010 21:26

We were there for a week last week, and DS went from having a slight london twang to his accent to sounding Scottish. He is 2.8 years old. That is thanks to his cousins.

He'll be written out of Mum's will for sure if he speaks funny Smile.
