not buying school shoes

mumbar · 23/08/2010 16:53

OK, DS has 2 'deformed toes'.

I always buy him clarks school shoes as he wears these all day 5 days a week.

He had been given his biomechanical assessment apointment for the first Thursday of term Hmm It says to wear shorts and bring the shoes he'd normally wear.

WWYD? Buy the school shoes and hope if they give inserts etc they will fit in the £35 pair of shoes or wait until after the appointment and what shoes should I take as he'd normally be weraing the school ones!!
He also has trainers and plimsols he would wear out of school.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Can he not wear last year's school shoes, or are they much too small? Or ring the place that's doing the biomechanical assessment and ask their advice?

mumbar · 23/08/2010 17:10

biomechanical assesment people can't say without seeing him what the treatment will be. Afa they are c if he wears school shoes normally he should be assesed in them.

Last years shoes do not fit as clarks ones wore out June so bought asda ones for the last month Blush

Buy the school shoes now. Don't let him wear them for the first few days of school so they are still in new condition. Then in appt you can say 'these are the shoes he will be wearing every day' and he can wear them in the appt. If the treatment then involves having to wear different shoes you can still return these ones and not be out of pocket!

If the cheap Asda ones fit then put them in those if you are worried about any new ones not fitting if they use inserts. IF the shoes don't fit with inserts then you have to buy new ones anyway, and they should expect that?

maddy68 · 23/08/2010 18:14

send him to school in the school shoes - at my school it would be an issue if he wasnt in full school uniform and would either be sent to the isolation room or sent home - not a nice way to start the term

mumbar · 23/08/2010 19:01

thanks for advice mners.

fel1x - that is a brilliant idea Envy I didn't think of that. Thats why posting is a good idea at times Wink

mrsdo - unfortunatly the asda ones don't fit and its because I think school uniform should be worn and his school will make a fuss if not I bought the cheapies for the end of term.

maddy68 - thats what worries me. Not sure how much of an issue non school shoes would be for ds as he's only 6 but his school can be funny about the wierdest things Grin. Also I think as he is starting yr 2 and will be top of the infants (as he keeps saying) then I do want him to wear school shoes.

I think what I'll do is buy the shoes and when I take him the first day if school are happy with him to wear trainers for first week go with fel1x idea and if not change his shoes then and there and hope he doesn't need new ones 4 days later!!

i suppose I could sell the newish ones on ebay as hardly worn if thats the case. ??

Clarks do some shoes where you can take the inserts out. My ex has them for work because he wears orthotics, and they won't fit with the inserts in there as well. I'm not 100% sure that they do them for childrens shoes, but it would be worth looking.

mumbar · 23/08/2010 19:04

oh curlymama thanks for that advice - certainly worth looking into.

We have inserts for DS2. First time round I bought a pair of shoes 1/2 size too big, and 1 width fitting higher. This is what the orthotics guy recommended - and the inserts/shoes fitted great together.

I would say get him measured and buy the shoes, but keep them in the box. Take last years Asda ones that still fit, and new ones in box with you and if there are any problems you can take them back.

Would say though our 1st appointment we were just measured for inserts and had to wait 3-4 weeks for them to be made and given to us.

mumbar - startrite definitely do children's shoes with removable (different colours/thicknesses) inserts, dd1 tried some on a couple of weeks ago. HTH Smile

mumbar · 23/08/2010 20:04

Oh definatly look into the removeable insert shoes and we have a shop that doe s startrite by me too.

I usually end up having to get 1/2 size bigger because his toes overlap and also wider fit as he measures an F but has a ridiculously high instep usually gets an G or even H!!!

I did think about the time it would take for inserts to be made and as the only 'shoes' ds has that fit him at the mo (he's just gone up a size) are plimsoles style which I do not think will be at all suitable in October if cold and wet. (bit like now Hmm)

OP, possibly part of the assessment will be to look at the wear pattern on his shoes, whether he walks on the outside/inside of his feet etc., so I would not go with just unworn shoes.

mumbar · 23/08/2010 21:34

oh another good point whereyouleftit

AIBU to now think all you mners are a font of useful knowledge.

So its decided to get shoes with removeable insoles with enough growth AND take a pair he's worn lots.

I do think perhaps this could be a reason as my toes on my r foot are curled as I walk on the outside so the weight goes on my outer foot NOT the big toe iyswim. Thats what makes me think he'll have insoles.

Thanks for all the very useful advice mners. Smile
