Do I keep it???

DH reckons if I hand it in to the police it'll just make it into one of their pockets, but I can't help thinking it might be some little old lady's gas money...or not!

WWYD?

well done Berri. You did the right thing

RubyBuckleberry · 18/08/2010 19:13

can't believe the amount of people saying hand it in! keep it fgs. you snooze you lose Grin

RubyBuckleberry · 18/08/2010 19:14

off Blush

Headbanger · 18/08/2010 19:14

That was supposed to be quoting the DH - too pissed off to proof-read!

berri · 18/08/2010 19:15

I made the report over the phone in case anyone rang tonight, going down there tomorrow - did you think I was fibbing sorrento?!

OP posts:
RubyBuckleberry · 18/08/2010 19:15

don't you get to keep it if noone claims it

sorrento56 · 18/08/2010 19:18

Maybe, tbh.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 18/08/2010 19:20

You did the right thing :) Now you have a nice glowy feeling of good deedness, and you might still get the £90 Grin

scurryfunge · 18/08/2010 19:20

Why would you keep something that doesn't belong to you Ruby? That would be theft.

If no one claims it within a time period, then you can get to keep it. You don't have to hand it in to the police but you must take reasonable steps to trace an owner before you can keep it.

prozacfairy · 18/08/2010 19:22

Hand it in. Karma can either be your best friend or your worst nightmare. And your DH's justification for keeping it is pathetic Hmm

AprilMeadow · 18/08/2010 19:26

How on earth is it theft??? Good lord you lot are full of crap! She found it on the pavement, she didn't take it from someone's pocket/purse!!

I wouldn't have handed it in to the police, instead I would have popped it in a charity box.

belgo · 18/08/2010 19:27

Can't believe the this thread - wouldn't any of you be tempted, just a little bit, to keep it?

You have done the right thing berri but I would have hesitated as well.

4madboys · 18/08/2010 19:29

same here belgo!

i did find £30 on the pavement and kept it, would prob hand in a larger amount, but if its not in a purse etc

berri · 18/08/2010 19:30

Cheers Sorrento - why would I start a thread and then lie on it?!

OP posts:
RubyBuckleberry · 18/08/2010 19:30

theft haha silly silly!

elliemental · 18/08/2010 19:30

Arpil, it's not theft, as in taking it from someone, but it is 'intending to permantently deprive someone of their property'

And it is dishonest

And yay you! Yes, Put it in a charity box so that 70 per cent of it can go towards administration costs and you can feel all self-righteous - meanwhile, a struggling person (a mum? And elderly person?) could be distraught by the losss of their money - food money, bills money, rent money...

I tell you what, this time last year, me losing £90 cash would have tipped me over a precipice.

Headbanger · 18/08/2010 19:32

Isn't the definition of theft about taking something which you know not to be yours, with the intention of permanently depriving the owner of it? If so, it would be theft.

Headbanger · 18/08/2010 19:33

x with elliemental.

I am genuinely horrified that so many of you would keep it. Nice one. I hope you bring up your respective children to have better morals Hmm

Mowgli1970 · 18/08/2010 19:35

You did the right thing, I can't believe so many people would keep it either!

scurryfunge · 18/08/2010 19:35

It is theft by finding......AprilMeadow...theft has a broad definition.Look it up.

AprilMeadow · 18/08/2010 19:37

Whoever it was dropped it... annoying yes and could cause a whole heap of issues for them as £90 is a lot of money BUT in no way is it theft or depriving them of it as they had LOST IT. It's not like Berri saw the person drop it and then picked it up rather than catching up with them to give it back.

So not theft and not dishonest as she has done nothing wrong.

Seriously Berri, you did a really good thing by informing the police of your find.

scurryfunge · 18/08/2010 19:39

AprilMeadow....it is theft, like it or not.

berri · 18/08/2010 19:40

Thanks AM, am seriously feeling a lot better knowing I have!

MiladyDeSummer · 18/08/2010 19:40

I remember my Mum finding a money bag full of notes on the pavement when I was a child. She handed it in and it did turn out to be someone's pension.

RubyBuckleberry · 18/08/2010 19:41

no its not. its finding something cool on the pavement. hang around and look for the owner. ask in local shops maybe. stick around for an hour to see if they come back. but fgs if you lost £90 would you go to the police to ask if they had it? really? well this thread is an education! maybe losing £90 would make you look after your cash better next time.
