Selling children's t shirts saying 'mum
says I'm on the short bus because I'm special' and 'I keep telling you I'm not a retard'
what do you think- should I fire bomb the place or just write to the md. Or both?

link to the T shirts. Trouble is I can see why the kids like them - several of them are very funny, especially the Rock is Dead one. And I have to confess I had to give myself a stern talking to for laughing at the AD/HD one. Blush

I will write to David and Goliath tomorrow, and to the Manager of Bluewater - please will others do the same?

You've linked to the american david and goliath site- the UK one is here I'm not sure whether there's another one, or which would be best to contact.

Right I've contacted the UK site.

Perhaps both? The t-shirts are on both sites.

The founder,Todd Goldman, was also responsible for the 'Boys are Stupid, throw rock at them' range it seems.

According to Wikipedia...

'In December 2003, radio-host and masculist Glenn Sacks started a campaign against the T-shirts, on the grounds of misandry. This raised national attention and led to the removal of the shirts from several thousand retail outlets.[2] The debate between Sacks and the clothing designer, Todd Goldman, was covered by hundreds of television and radio stations. More than 300 publications in half a dozen countries ran articles covering the issue. These included TIME, Forbes, The Washington Post, and The Guardian in the United Kingdom.'

I bet there won't be the same outcry over these t-shirts. But why shouldn't there be?

Not pithy enough, BuzzingNoise - but I have no brain after a day at Bluewater so I can't improve on it. Let me think.......

the "I keep telling you, I'm not a retard" one, it doesn't seem the same level of offensive to me, or is it just offensive because the word retard is used? the message seems to be the same as "stop picking on me" or "don't call me stupid" etc

i agree the other one is really near the knuckle

on a positive note I was in M&S the other day when a lady come in with a young girl (13 ish) to try on several bras all of the underwired push up padded clevage enhancing lacy type. The assistant very tactfully pointed out that they were not recommended for young girls and gave her some more appropriate ones.

Some of those T-shirts are v. funny but there's no excuse for the retard or short bus ones.

Report
LetThereBeRock · 18/08/2010 20:36

Well I see they still have their 'Boys are stupid' range available so I'm not holding out much hope that they'll remove these t-shirts from their range, but perhaps they can be removed from the Bluewater store at least.

yes i suppose i am being dimwitted thinking retard is acceptable on a children's t-shirt
it isn't making fun of learning difficulties in quite the same way that the other one is, so i guess i found it less immediately offensive

Report
LetThereBeRock · 18/08/2010 20:39

I don't think it'd be acceptable on an adult's t-shirt either.
It's really no longer acceptable,or it shouldn't be to use the term to describe people with cognitive/learning disabilities.

Report
CoupleofKooks · 18/08/2010 20:45

no i agree
what i meant to convey was that it is especially offensive on a child's t-shirt (IMO), as the child is unlikely to have chosen it themselves or to fully understand the implications of the 'joke'
