...to think staff have to repack returned items?

OK - I know it's not very important but just annoyed me so thought I'd 'constructively waste' 5 mins posting this!!

I returned a pack of 3 school shirts to M&S, having taken one shirt out to try it on YS. I can't fold the things up so I just stuffed it back in the packaging as neatly as I could.

After the grumpy assistant completely ignored me when I said that the reason for the return was that the age 8 shirt was so tight round the collar he could hardly breathe and that I'd had to go up to an age 10 shirt [he's 7] to get a collar that fitted correctly, she then told me I should have packed the shirt back properly! Sorry but I thought that was their job, not mine...?

You should have returned it packed properly

She's being rude (unusually rude, for M&S!). If you return something, she ought to get it out of the packing and check you've returned it in the condition you said it was in - so how you packed it doesn't matter. She was being lazy.

ftm42 · 18/08/2010 12:20

usualsuspect - please tell me how to re-package shirts. I can hardly unpack the damn things, let alone pack them up again!

Was there none out on display for you to judge the sizes?

ftm42 · 18/08/2010 12:28

Nope.

It never says that things must be returned properly packed, only that they must be returned in their original packaging. It's not really worth getting worked up about a shop assistant having a bad day and being snippy though. Just be glad that you don't have a job that involves repackaging things.

I'm fairly immune to the rather feeble rudness of UK shop assistants having lived in Berlin for a while where the customer service was truly shocking.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/08/2010 12:44

Sounds like there is a mistake with the labelling if the sizes are that off. In that case it doesn't matter how it is repacked as it will just be sent back.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/08/2010 12:45

you shouldn't have to judge the sizes!

If you have what could reasonably be described as an averagely sized child it is fair to assume that the shirts for his age will fit - you shouldn't have to go around measuring him against the shirts that are 3 years older because their sizing is all wrong/

usualsuspect · 18/08/2010 12:48

If there are shirts on display I would use them to judge the sizes..maybe I just had odd sized kids ..Grin

I'm not saying that you shouldn't check - I do measure sometimes as sizes do vary from shop to shop, just that that can't be used as an excuse not to return them.

Do you think that all shop assistants are trained in shirt folding? Accepting returns of non faulty items is at the store discretion, I'm always grateful I'm able to do it as in many places it wouldn't be possible. It's basic good manners to make sure returned item is in saleable condition.

m and s always come up small on my ds

racheyh · 18/08/2010 14:00

Off topic but have you noticed posh shops like Debenhams, M&S etc (before anyone has a go, to me a place is posh if a kids t-shirt costs more than a couple of quid!)clothes are smaller than bargain shops like Primark, George at ASDA. My DS1 is 3 and wears 3-4year clothes from the bargain shops but would have to be in 4-5 or sometimes 5-6 in the posh shops. Just wondered if anyone knew the reason for this?

Sorry to hijack, as you were ladies.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/08/2010 16:39

I have always found M&S to be huge for the DC - I bought sleepsuits for DD at 9months and couldn't put her in them for another 5 months they were so big. I think that if you are returning them because you have changed your mind, or you bought the wrong colour, and they are doing you a favour by taking them back then you should fold them.
If the shirt is faulty then it doesn't matter - they aren't going to resell it.
