No silly hats involved I'm afraid!
Dp wants us to drive across America in a van in some sort of thelma and louise camping-come-piss up -he has already startedplanning the route....

I want to fly first class to Venice, stay in the palace and be hand fed truffles in a jacuzzi while making friends with the boss of john lewis, who will subsequently offer me everything in the shop free of charge...sigh.

IANBU.

Oh I'd love to do a proper east to west American road trip. Some of my best times visiting the States have been the journeys and I love road movies.
So I'm going to have to say yabu.

bruffin · 15/08/2010 00:03

I would love to do the road trip as well!

thelunar66 · 15/08/2010 00:03

ooooh... torn

Both holidays sound fab.

Do your DP's one first, followed by yours the year after.

Is that a plan?

cupcakesandbunting · 15/08/2010 00:05

My dad and stepmum have just done the Route 66 trip and loved it. Live a little! I wish my DH would suggest anything half as exciting!

Oh no Dinky, I would love a free-form drive round America.

Prefer that to Venice any day.

But yes, compromise, do his choice of holiday one year, yours the next.

Or on your road trip go to Vegas and stay at the Venice-themed hotel, they have gondolas and everything

Dinkytinky · 15/08/2010 00:09

Damn you all. Did you not read the john lewis part ??(although I suppose there is no guarentee mr john lewis will be there-will phone ahead to check)

OP posts:
TheCrackFox · 15/08/2010 00:20

Even with the John Lewis thing I would lurve to do a road trip across America.

Ozziegirly · 15/08/2010 02:22

The USA one is a kind of dream trip of mine too, so I'm with your DH!

We did a similar trip a couple of years ago down the east coast (NY, Washington, through the appalachians, North Carolina, Charleston, the barrier islands, Savannah, Georgia and the top bit of Florida) and it was the BEST holiday we have ever had, absolutely amazing.

I agree with the others - do DH's one year, yours the second.

tilbatilba · 15/08/2010 02:35

Road trip with Mr Dinky tinky any day!!!!!!

kickassangel · 15/08/2010 02:36

how are you going to have a van to drive in? one way hires are vvv expensive & if you buy a car you'll be lucky if you can get insurance - tell him to resolve this little problem first, then look at the routes

BaggedandTagged · 15/08/2010 03:08

Kickassangel- one way rentals are not prohibitive in the US, especially for SUVs or campers on the touristy road trip routes which are popular in both directions. Sometimes (if you go in the less popular direction) they can be cheaper than "return to same location" because the car hire companies are pleased to have someone drive the vehicle back.

eg If you do Highway 1 from SF to LA, it's cheaper than doing LA to SF because more people want to start in LA.

That is an awesome route btw, OP.

Ozziegirly · 15/08/2010 05:26

We hired our SUV in NYC and dropped it off in Atlanta with no drama at all, and it wasn't expensive. We went through Budget actually and they were excellent. Not sure if they do vans.

LtEveDallas · 15/08/2010 06:13

We Are doing this in 2012. Taking a month (Aug) and driving from Ohio to Florida, sorry, but I'm with your DH!

proudnsad · 15/08/2010 07:07

Totally with your dp! Sounds amazing. We 'did' America last summer, though not in fab camper, and it was fabulous.
Went to Venice few years ago, was beautiful but obviously not child friendly (not for my uncultured lot anyway). Or are children not involved?

Isawthreeships · 15/08/2010 07:11

Can see the attraction in both holidays. I would have preferred your DPs before my DS came along (we did something similar on bikes and had an awesome time). Post-child though, your holiday sounds like my idea of heaven.

I'm afraid compromise is the only answer - his one year, yours the year after. Or do the camping trip but end it with a few days of luxury in a fabulous hotel.

Morloth · 15/08/2010 11:05

YANBU, I have seen everything I want to, now I want to lay by a pool with a book and full bar service whilst the kiddies frolic.

Have seen enough museums, castles, mountains, deserts etc to last me a lifetime thanks!

kickassangel · 16/08/2010 02:35

if you can get a one-way hire (or do a big loop) i'd do the US. spent 4 days in venice & feel i've 'done' it.

i live in the US & there's still a looooong list of places i want to 'do'. mind you, alaska & hawaii are on the list. not so easy to drive to.
