Went to see GP today about an ongoing cardio problem (nothing major been ongoing for years). I asked for rereferral to my cardiologist as my symptoms have worsened and last letter of discharge said "I have advised mrs lisad123 to see how her symptoms are for atleast year but if she is struggling to manage to referal via GP".

So went to GP as recently changed my exserice routine and its causing some problems.
So I go in and ask for referal back to cardiologist and given huge lecture about how primary and secondary caretrusts are battling over budgets and he refused to let them cash in further by another referal Shock his sent me off with some heart meds I have never had before and told if it slows my heart too much to "just take half dose instead"!!
Im a little worried about taking them agrrr

Crikey!I bet you just got a grumpy one on a bad day, no excuse I know.

1st - go back and see another dr in your practice
2nd - if you can take a friend or family member with you (2 against 1, it's just what lawyers do!!)
3rd Stand your ground. Explain you are unhappy, worried and unreassured.

You don't deserve a lecture about budgets. It's not your problem. Let us know how you go :)

Shock

Go and see a diffrent gp

diddl · 13/08/2010 17:54

That´s awful.

Didn´t the GP do any tests at all?

What are you taking atm, and what has he given?

matumble · 13/08/2010 18:06

go and see a different GP and complain to the practice, something so important surely shouldn't be left to chance

LilRedWG · 13/08/2010 18:11

I'd be tempted to call the Consultant's secretary and explain the situation, emphasising that you are concerned about the prescription and ask her advice, or - if you don't feel comfortable doing that write to the consultant.

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 13/08/2010 18:30

Im not on any meds at the moment as I could tolerate the beta blockers or the channel blockers so was told to see if i could live with the extra fasr rate and skipped beats (my hearts in pretty good shape considering). Dont think I will takig the drugs prescribed and good idea about ringing consultant directly.
No he didnt do any tests, just checked how quick pulse was going

We had a similar situation recently with my mum - she was having a symptom that the cardiac consultant had told her could be a sign of problems, but the GP refused to refer her. I contacted the consultant myself via e-mail (address from the departmental secretary) and got an appointment that way. The GP was presented with a fait accomplit, as it were. Luckily, the symptom turned out to be something else altogether, but the consultant thought we had done the right thing by getting in touch and told us to do the same thing again if necessary.

GPs are largely ignorant on cardiac matters and shouldn't have anything to do with it, to be honest. It's a field for specialists only.

SecretNutellaFix · 13/08/2010 18:33

That is shocking! it's not your fault that they can't manage their money properly. You need appropriate treatment not a pointless exercise in self-absorbed ranting!

diddl · 13/08/2010 18:36

Has the GP given you something that isn´t a beta blocker/channel blocker?

How fast is your heart without medication?

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 13/08/2010 18:42

without med my resting rate is about 125-130 bpm and when exsercising upto 300 bmp. His given me some drugs they use for angina treatments? Confused

I´m probably lucky as I´m on Bisoprolol & it´s OK for me.

But I thought that there were a few medications that could be tried without suggesting nothing?

Am Shock that he is directly going against a consultant.

I thought GPs treated consultants as gods!

RunawayWife · 13/08/2010 18:55

Shock can you go and see a different Dr?

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 13/08/2010 18:56
