to let 14 year old dd go to Bath for the day (2 hrs away on train)?

DD has gone with a friend (also 14) to Bath on the train from Gloucester, changing at Swindon. She is due back at half 7.

Just spoke to dd and told him what dd is doing today - he has just said I am mad for letting her go, she is not old enough to change trains at a big station (Swindon is NOT a big station) and what would I think if something 'happened' to her.

I am slightly mystified - she has gone on the train to Exeter on her own before. When I said this to him he said that that didn't involve changing trains, and that was for a serious reason (to go and see her gran) NOT for something frivolous.

He is just really sniffy about it - god knows why, he is normally so laid back he is horizontal.

She will be absolutely fine. How else is she going to learn?

Decorhate · 13/08/2010 16:09

Depends on the child really but if she is sensible, with a friend & has her mobile it should be fine. Has she done the journey before with you?

TanteRose · 13/08/2010 16:09

My DD is 12 and gets the train to her dance class about 30 mins away, changing trains half way.

SheikYerbouti · 13/08/2010 16:10

She will be fine - Bath is a very nice place (cos I live there, innit?)

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/08/2010 16:10

I know.

I just said 'oh for fuck sake nothing is going to happen to her in Bath, chill out'

I now assume that the law of sod will be invoked and she fall over and break her wrist, or something.

She is having a lovely time, feels all grown up going on the train.

Anyone would tink I gave her the car keys and told her to drive herself.

I think that's a reasonable thing for a 14 yo to do. She was obviously comfortable with it herself and she's with a friend. What does your dh think might happen to her? She could miss the train back or the connection, I expect she could cope with that?

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/08/2010 16:11

No, she has never been there on the train before, just got the times etc from thetrainline.com

She has text several times to say how much fun she is having.

Yes, she could easily miss the connection, but don't think it would be the end of teh world, she could just get the next one.

It was only a fiver for a return ticket as well, was very surprised at how cheap it was.

GOML I can see Swindon station from my office window - what time's she changing? I'll give her a wave!!

She can't go wrong as there's only 4 platforms.

Good for you for letting her go.

TheCrackFox · 13/08/2010 16:15

She'll be fine, Swindon isn't a big station anyway.

TBH, it will be good for her - developing her life skills etc.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 13/08/2010 16:17

Colleague of mine's young teenage dd was mugged recently - but that could have happened in Gloucester, too.

Would you like me to go and check up on her? Am but five minutes from the centre right now. Grin

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/08/2010 16:18

Lol Jenai and Addicted.

OOOH wouldn't that be FUNNY for you to go and tap a teenager on the shoulder, say 'Hi dd, just checking up on you for your mum', give a beatific grin and walk away.

AddictedtoCrunchies · 13/08/2010 16:22

That was a joke btw, in case you think I'm a stalker..

Tracey - there is a Jack Wills in Cheltenham, every time we go into Cheltenham we spend ages - looking at tops which cost £70 and knickers which cost £15.

DD loves it

traceybath · 13/08/2010 16:26

I went into Jack Willis the other week and my face was like this Shock at the prices.

How do teenagers afford it?

QueuePosition3 · 13/08/2010 16:28

pLEASE make addicted tell you she is smoking

SheikYerbouti · 13/08/2010 16:30

I have never been to Jack Wills, but I walk -past it on my way to the Volunteer Rifleman's.

Bath is ace

[waves back to JustShagging - big up from the Newbridge posseeeeeee]

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/08/2010 16:30

teenagers can't afford it, they CON their parents into it.

Not often though, I restrict it to treats and presents.

It is full of kids who go to cheltenham college, all looking like kate Middleton clones.

Lol Queue, can you imagine - me looking all tight lipped when she comes in 'someone told me that you were stood by the river with some 20-20 and a packet of rothmans.'

TheCrackFox · 13/08/2010 16:33

Jack Wills is soooooo expensive, why are teenagers so in love with it? 'tis shite.

pointydog · 13/08/2010 16:33

yanbu, orf. I would happily wave my 14 yr old off on such a trip.
