to want to re-do my GCSE's?

I left school a long, long time ago and my teen neice is waiting on her GCSE's which i'm sure will be amazing. I left school with 11 GCSE's but they were all grades D & E. I was so ashamed at the time, but helping my neice revise before she did the exams, I realised that I knew so much and had learned so much more in the time i've left school that I ever learned while I was there.

I've therefore concluded that at almost 30 years of age, I would love to redit my GCSE's just for the fun of it, and to make myself proud that i'm worth so much more than those terrible D and E grades.

Has anyone re-sat their GCSE's as an adult?

I'm 22 do did them 6 years ago...I think Hmm!

I also got D's and E's (and F,G and U) and am desperate to redo mine!

Quite hard to find a course though (Am in London!)

Why not just sign up at an evening class-start with English Language and Maths then try a modern language,a science and maybe History or Geography-that lot would take you onward if you wanted to go on academically.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 12/08/2010 15:26

Sorry should have said it's hard to find one at a time I can do

All are about 8pm and I work until then or later unfortunately

Go for it! My mum tutors adults who've not been well treated by the school system - lots of people re-take GCSEs/update old O-Levels.

atswimtwolengths · 12/08/2010 16:00

You'll have to check out your area, but in my area adults can't take nightclasses without paying for them, and they're about £250 per year.

WinkyWinkola · 12/08/2010 16:06

YANBU.

I'd love to do science GCSEs and A levels because I seemed to have been pushed into the humanities at school... ... .. .

I'm 38 though so maybe that is just too late. After all, what would I do with them?

When is it too late to start a new career?

Why don't you have a look at the open university? I left school with only average GCSE's and Im now doing a life sciences (biology) degree. I'm hoping to use it to access medical school once the kids are older.

You don't have to do a degree, they have lots of what they call openings courses in all sorts of subjects, there's bound to be something you like the look of.

usualsuspect · 12/08/2010 16:10

Lots of people older people retake their gcse's at the college where I work .. go for it ..You will have to pay though

atswimtwolengths · 12/08/2010 16:16

Usual suspect - but are they older than 19 when they resit? As you say, they have to pay for them and it's expensive.

I'm a teacher in a sixth form college and we've been told that no students over 19 should be doing GCSEs - they should sign up for Access courses if they want to go to university.

I think it's a great shame - it stops people from carrying on with their education because so many can't do a full-time course.

usualsuspect · 12/08/2010 16:19

Yes, I work in an adult education college ..the majority are over 19 ..

mumdrivenmad · 12/08/2010 16:20

you can do an access to higher education course, that would be a level 2 qualification, and would enable you to get into university, you can do them part time or full time, just ask at your local college.

catkinq · 12/08/2010 16:21

lots of people do. The OU also do "openings" courses which are well worth looking at - all can be done at home so no baby sitter hassle.

JaneS · 12/08/2010 16:21

That's strange isn't it at? GCSEs are really useful for loads of people who've no intention of going to university.

OP - would your current work perhaps support you on the basis it's further training (slim hope I know)?

whatkatydidathome · 12/08/2010 16:27

YANBU - also look at OU "openings" courses

cupcakesandbunting · 12/08/2010 16:29

YANBU. I only got 4 GCSEs at grade B, the rest were Ds (I guess I liked some subjects more than others) School out me off education until I was 22, when I went to uni' and did my degree. Now I just want to learn and learn more. Only finances stop me.

Go for it, if you can. I still feel ashamed of my GCSEs, despite having a degree.
