because i am in so much pain?

I moved a heavy old fashioned chest of drawers 2 days ago and am now in total agony having pulled a muscle between my lungs and rib cage.

I need to yawn and i can't because it hurts so much when I try that i keep stopping myself. Sad Sad

Oh dear. Silly questionb but have you seen a doctor or taken any painkillers?

Perhaps ibuprofen if you haven't already tried that?

Hope you feel better soon. Call NHS Direct and ask for advice perhaps?

TheLadyEvenstar · 10/08/2010 23:59

Maylee yes saw dr today have Diclofenic and co-codomal to take as well as my asthma pump (not sure why he told me to take that though when he said my lungs were clear) but they don't stop it hurting enough for me to have a reallllly big yawn lol.

oh....sorry it's still hurting so much then

hope you get some sleep tonight x

NiftyGeranium · 11/08/2010 00:12

it hurts hon, because everytime you breath it stretches the muscle. Take analgesia regularly, at the maximum dose. take your asthma pump. rest, inhale steam, and if the analgesia is not sufficeint then go back to the doc and ask for something stronger

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 00:16

Nifty Dr gave me co-codamol and diclofenic to take meant to take 1 diclofenic and 2 co-codamol 4 times a day and 2 puffs on ventolin 4 times a day.....how long you think it will take to ease off?

oh god TLE, I really feel for you :(

Definitely take the full / top dose of painkillers for two or three days, whatever they've told you to do. Muscle will start to fix itself quite quickly, but assuming that you've pulled your intercostal muscles, they're a bugger to try and rest properly (on account of us having to breathe, obv...)
I had tons of painkillers a few months ago when I had pleurisy, what they want to avoid is letting you do silly shallow breathing - understandable because it hurts - but that could cause you to get a chest infection or similar due to you not breathing properly.

Rest whenever you can in a position that's comfortable, but don't restrict your breathing and take all those painkillers. If it isn't doing enough then go back and get more codeine (by that I mean stronger). You can take paracetamol, codeine and diclofenac together iirc. My tactic was to take the paracetamol and codeine 6 hourly and the anti-inflamatory stuff in between, so there was a decent level of pain relief all the time. Good luck.

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 00:32

Giggle thanks for that!!!
I will remember about the paracetomol because it is in between I am struggling.

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 00:34

all Dr said was the muscle between rib cage and lungs....sadly I am not up on the names!! just the pain lol

OP posts:
gigglewitch · 11/08/2010 01:31

ouch.
pity with all those painkillers ... you can't get p1ssed instead Shock

Ilovemangoes · 11/08/2010 04:20

Co=codamol already has paracetamol in it, so you cannot have "extra" paracetamol, and diclofenac is normally 3 times a day, not 4 - check with your Dr about this if you are not sure, or if it's not enough.

Hope you feel better soon.

ClimberChick · 11/08/2010 04:35

(hugs)

I once pulled my diaphram (sp?) and it was really painful. Took nearly a week for me to start feeling normal and contemplating going drug free.

Though my doc didn't tell me to take my inhaler, just gave me loads of codeine. I found they didn't reduce my pain, but they stopped me caring quite so much and managed to carry on with most of my weeks actities, but I also needed to just sit and cry at night

Hope you feel better soon and that this hasn't just depressed you more.

ClimberChick · 11/08/2010 05:35

by this, I meant my post. I didn't mean that I think you depressed Blush

TheLadyEvenstar · 11/08/2010 09:40

So far this morning the pain is not too bad but I have got out of bed and sat on the sofa lol you can tell I am working hard atm haha

ClimberChick · 13/08/2010 05:28

how you getting on?

gigglewitch · 13/08/2010 12:30

oi, TLE - how are you doing?

TheLadyEvenstar · 13/08/2010 21:15

My body lulled me into a false sense of security yesterday and the pain eased off totally, so i carried on with my normal everyday life shopping cleaning etc and guess what???

I am back in the same amount of pain today Sad

ClimberChick · 13/08/2010 21:31

tut tut tut

well you know what to do (or not to do)

Give yourself at least a week of light/must do duties

gigglewitch · 13/08/2010 23:04

what climberchic says. Just because it's not killing you ... well you know the rest. That doesn't qualify as 100% fit and ready to abuse your muscles again Shock

More rest this time then? Wink and back to the luverly painkillers.

bluejeans · 13/08/2010 23:10

YANBU

I fell downstairs a few years ago and pulled/tore a muscle or ligament or something in my knee. Until then I didn't think anyone over the age of 10 actually cried from pain

Wishing you a speedy recovery
