to feel gutted that dd2 chipped her (adult)front tooth, which has barely been there six months!

She will be 7 on Friday. She was diving in the learner pool today and collided with another girl's forehead - must have been a hard forehead, because she lost a corner of her tooth. She is so upset about "breaking" her adult tooth, which she hasn't had that long!

Please tell me the dentist will be able to work miracles...

Oh no, I understand completely. My DD chipped her baby tooth and it died (the tooth!) so looked kind of grey and dentist said it might damage the adult one behind it. I was devastated. Totally torchured myself for 'letting' it happen to her.

SloanyPony · 10/08/2010 21:53

The dentist can build it up with something, without needing a full on veneer, I think, someone, who knows more, please confirm?

I remember them offering to do it to mine where I ground it at a funny angle...

SheelaNyGig · 10/08/2010 21:54

that is exactly what i did with mine. i was 8. i chipped a chunk off the corner.

the dentist filled it in with a toothy plastic bit - like a jigsaw and glued it in place. first repair lasted about 10 years, then since it's lasted 3 or 4 years.

last time i had it fixed he said 'you could leave it, it's just cosmetic' Confused yes - cosmetic in that i have half a front tooth missing - i know i'm no supermodel but....

I feel sorry for the poor 'hard foreheaded' girl your daughter dived on top of.Has she got half your offspring's tooth embedded in it?

ratspeaker · 10/08/2010 22:27

One of my kids did something similar, 10 years ago.
The tooth is still nice and white
The chip didn't extend into the pulp
It was built up for a while, sort of white filling material I think.
It was recently knocked again so the chip is showing, (must visit dentist soon)

Go talk to your dentist to assess damage

emkana · 10/08/2010 22:29

Forehead girl didn't even cry! Must have a very solid forehead indeed! So spare your sympathy for my dd please Wink

Hi emkana - my son (8) also chipped his adult front tooth, only we have no idea when it happened Blush - it actually looked like it grew in that way Confused

Although we know it did not - as his dentist was able to look at the x-ray from previous visit and see it - and it was perfect.

He of course is not at all bothered by it ? in fact I think he is quite proud. Anyway the dentist said its no big deal and she will fix with a putty substance (as the other posters described). But she said she will not do till all his adult teeth have grown in.

It took me a while to get used to it and not be horrified every time I looked at him ? but now I hardly notice it

fluffles · 10/08/2010 22:33

SIL chipped hers recently and had a wee bit of white filling material put in and you can't see it at all.

ItsGraceActually · 10/08/2010 22:38

YANBU, she must have been so cheesed off! Forehead girl sounds very brave :)

I broke mine snogging violently Blush It's been built up as described before, but looks disgusting now because I can't get it re-done on the NHS.

Once her grown-up teeth have all settled, she might want to think about having one of those fake screwed-in teeth. They last as long as real ones, I'm told.

Jux · 10/08/2010 22:42

Happened to me too. Really crap dentist filed both of them down to points, put gold backs on them and uneven cement on the fronts, which discoloured almost immediately. Never had anything but trouble with them ever since, even though they've been capped since. It was far too late to affect my confidence as I haven't been able to smile unself-consciously since I was 8. If I had the money I'd have something sensible done.

I'm sure dentists do much better things these days, though, but make sure you don't go for that option if it's offered!

I have always envied my classmate who chipped her front teeth at about the same time as me, and whose dentist said to leave them until she was 12. My dentist had been struck off by then.

katiestar · 10/08/2010 22:44

'I broke mine snogging violently '
ROFL at this! (Sorry)

ItsGraceActually · 10/08/2010 22:45

Jux Angry on your behalf.

ItsGraceActually · 10/08/2010 22:47

I know, katie - trouble is, it reminds me of him every time I see it! Can't wait to find a Very Kind NHS dentist ...

This happened to me when I was about 11, I slipped over on a wet changing room floor after swimming and chipped a massive chunk off my front tooth. My mum was so upset, she was almost crying, so I can understand how you feel. The tooth was capped and more than 20 years later it's still as good as new and it looks just like my real tooth. Good luck with getting it fixed.

MumNWLondon · 11/08/2010 11:41

Happened to my nephew when he was 8. Feel off his bike. Dentist has done temporary repair and will get permanent repair once he's had orthodontics.
