Two news channels showing it live. Most of the day.

Someone tell me why. Please.

Because it is evidence that the President of Liberia was dealing in blood diamonds during the war in Sierra Leone, creating child soldiers and illegal arms deals.

Who he gave some of the diamonds too is not that relevant, but still confirms Naomi Campbell as not a very nice person.

piprabbit · 09/08/2010 22:06

Because dealing in blood diamonds is alleged to fund the sort of terrorists soldiers who routinely chop off the hands of civilian men, women and children.

LucyLouLou · 09/08/2010 22:11

This isn't entertainment Jux and if you really think it is, I worry about your lack of access to news on a wider scale! They are showing a war crimes trial, it's not showbiz!

scottishmummy · 09/08/2010 22:13

blood diamonds sold on black market to fund guns, ammo and a bloody war,the diamonds were a source of funding atrocities

If it was on the television all day, why do you not know why??

Housewife2010 · 09/08/2010 22:15

Naomi Campbell is always doing something unpleasant. Surely it's about time to lock her up?

scottishmummy · 09/08/2010 22:17

the phone-throwing-maid-slapping screamer is a ned

smallorange · 09/08/2010 22:18

It's pretty sad that the only reason this trial got any coverage at all was because Naomi Campbell is involved.

Gigantaur · 09/08/2010 22:21

I was totally unaware of all of this as i watch very little TV.

I am appalled that even a war crime trial needs celebrity endorsement for it to be considered newsworthy.

SecurusScriptor · 09/08/2010 22:21

You're NBU to care about Naomi Campbell in itself, but the fact that it links the President of Liberia to blood diamonds is really important to the case.

Naomi Campbell is (again) doing nothing to improve how she is perceived as a person.

fluffles · 09/08/2010 22:27

YABtotallyU

because it shows how vanity can condone war-crimes

and that ignorance is no defence

and that consumerism and greed on one side of the world feeds death and torture and grinding poverty on the other

DorotheaPlenticlew · 09/08/2010 22:30

Some perspective, please, woman! YABU, but I see everyone else has already gotten in first to tell you why.

Heracles · 09/08/2010 22:35

Well, there's no way of knowing that, is there?

Jux · 09/08/2010 22:45

I knew it was a war crimes trial, but no more. I've been tangled in a web of two of my close friends falling out seriously and am suffering from soggy shoulders and brain ache. I have been listening to different stories from the pair of them for over a week, and they won't leave me alone.

I'm usually on top of the news rather better than thisBlush, and LucyLouLou, you are quite right to express worry about my "lack of access to news on a wider scale".

I was with one friend this a.m. while her child was trying to get his DVD or game working, and all he could get was BBC1 which was showing Mia Farrow (?was it her?).

Then this afternoon, I had the other friend sobbing on me with her child also plonked in front of the TV watching the same thing on Sky because he was too young to switch over.

I asked DH just now what exactly was going on and he said some bloody has-beens have been taking jewels for services and these days it's called a war crime.

In his defence, I doubt he expected me to take what he said seriously.

(I am very embarrassed, as we both really honestly and truly are more aware of what's going on in the world around us than you would believe from this.)

OP posts:
Jux · 09/08/2010 22:48

But thanks to all of you for telling me what is going on.

Hassled · 09/08/2010 22:50

Naomi Campbell has actually done Taylor's victims a huge favour. Without her "performance" the other day, the level of awareness of the trial and the atrocities committed would be even lower than it is. I can't imagine that's what she hoped would happen, though.

Goblinchild · 09/08/2010 22:53

Well, if learning about it through the news is hurting your unwilling brain, you could always watch the film Blood Diamond, with prettyboy DeCaprio in it.
My son studied this in geography last year, in Y9. He was truly horrified. However, he didn't know who Naomi was until she hit the news this time. Priorities, innit?

LucyLouLou · 09/08/2010 22:56

In that case Jux, I apologise for my abruptness with you! Well done for coping with your friends today, and yes it was Mia Farrow!

Maverick1 · 09/08/2010 22:58

I must admit - my insights into the story owe a lot to the film 'Blood Diamond'...

Jux · 09/08/2010 23:06

I think I deserve whatever sarcasm is thrown at me on this occasion, but also claim mitigating circumstances.

I will try to do better in future.

Maverick1 · 09/08/2010 23:09

Never forget wikipedia for a quick low down on something....more reliable than your dh!

Maverick1 · 09/08/2010 23:13

here we are

Jux · 09/08/2010 23:26

Thank you Maverick. I always go to MN first! Maybe I should change that now, but, hmmmmmm, no, I think I'll still come here first. Got my fingers burnt though, didn't I?

Haven't seen the film, or I might have had a bit more awareness and not been quite so stupid.

OP posts:
BarmyArmy · 10/08/2010 10:24

Let's not be naive here - this trial has been going on for 3 years.

There's no way any of us would have paid attention to its coverage over that period of time.

Media outlets dip in and out of these trials as and when things get more 'interesting'. They did with Slobodan Milosevic and with Saddam Hussein...so with Charles Taylor.
