To have been impressed with the fraternity I witnessed today

Was at park today with DS and witnessed two different lovely older brothers entertainingy their younger siblings. One boy (10/11yo) was in children's area with his younger brother (3/4yo) while dad was in playing fields with other boy. He was so sweet with his brother, on the swing, slide etc. but also in encouraging imaginary play.

I then went to a completely different area of the park and another boy (again 10/11) was with his younger brother (no-one else about) and they had a great time with the water feature and pipe thing. He was so good at ensuring his younger brother didn't get wet but still enjoyed himself.

I really wanted to tell these boys how great I thought they were, but didn't want to come across as a loon. I just think we so often look at boys approaching or already in teenage years as potential thugs, unruly, uncaring. But, these lads were just the complete opposite of this. I was really impressed and hope my DS will grow up to be like them.

They sound lovely. I have two sons (3 and 1) and it amazes me every morning that they are so delighted to see each other. I really hope they turn out like the boys you saw today.

I was in the park a few months ago and there was a group of young teenagers. I must admit I eyed them a bit suspiciously. My DS kicked a ball over to one of them and bless him, he kicked a ball around with my son for a good 15 minutes. Another one of the boys gave my son a load of conkers and I mentally resolved never to look suspiciously at teenagers again.

Its lovely isn't it? There is something particularly sweet about a non-related older child looking after a toddler or younger child. One of my son's godfathers is a 10 year old friend of ours (well, son of a friend) - he is so kind to littlies, looks after his own 2 year old sister all the time, and we thought it would be good for our son to have someone to look up to who was more of a peer than a parent. So far he's been the most involved of all 5 godparents!!

Michaela, what a lovely idea to have a child as a godparent. :)
