Don't get me wrong, they don't swear, but often use words like Flid, Heifer lump, Stupid, Shutup, Fat, etc.

Everytime they do I make a big fuss about how I do not want my dd repeating such words, but it makes little to no difference.

I've even tried to use the, "How embarrassing will it be if she repeated this at nursery" argument, but again, doesn't seem to make much difference.

In case you're wondering, not my parents, they'd be horrified if they heard anyone speak like this. And no I don't think they're very nice people either.

Then again maybe I'm just a bit prudish.

never heard of flid
are the rest used as names or in conversation?
You're stupid, not ok but that was a stupid thing to do...

PueriSimilisCanis · 08/08/2010 15:49

I have heard folk use flid

Sad
PinkyMe · 08/08/2010 15:52

I had never heard of Flid until I met my inlaws. Apparently it is a term which used to be used to describe Thalidomide babies. They use it to tease one another.
Stupid in both senses you described. And FAt to describe people we pass on the street or see on telly, etc.

Like I said I don't think they're very nice people, but I also think (not that it's much of an excuse) but they are a product of their upbringing.

Children are going to hear a lot of colourful/non-PC/offensive words along the way, whether from GPs or not (and for a second there I thought you meant your doctor was making the surgery air blue). It is 'U' to expect people to know that you find the word 'fat' horrifying. So you have to explain to your child that 'xxx' is not a nice word and that we don't say that even if granny does.

Besom · 08/08/2010 15:58

The only thing you can do is to keep explaining to dd why you don't want her to use these words and to continue to challenge gp's (as nicely as you can) when they do it.

Naetha · 08/08/2010 16:02

Oh grandparents!

I thought you meant your family doctor too Wink

thumbwitch · 08/08/2010 16:02

I was wondering why you had such unprofessional medics there for a while as well!

Depending on how old your DC are, I would say to them that the words GPts use are not nice, should never be repeated as someone might get :( about being called those things and that GPts are getting on a bit so don't always remember to be polite.

If you have already had a word to them and they are not co-operating, then I don't think there's a lot you can do, tbh - except talk to your DC afterwards.

Sorry, GPs was me trying to be clever and obviously failing miserably Smile..

I call my dd's it when they are doing there 'I am going to stand right in your way like I have lost the ability to move, like a stuffed toy' thing.

Otherwise YANBU, the rest are not good though. I have stopped BIL being racist in front of DD's by lightly commenting 'Oh, can we have less of the casual racism please' or 'goodness me, doesn't uncle BIL know some disgusting words' so as not to make a big thing out of it in front of dd's.
I also use 'oh, that's not a very nice thing to say is it?' to let DD@s know it is still unnacceptable but without actually confronting IL's
