to a bit put out at what the woman said to me at the theatre?

We've just got back from a dance performance at the Festival Hall.

As everyone was leaving, the woman who had been sitting behind me said "next time you go to the theatre, go and sit at the back".
I was really bemused and she then said "I couldn't see anything because you're too big".
Now I am 6 feet tall and size 14 (and weigh 11 stone 4)
I was absolutely gobsmacked, and said that if she'd tapped me on the shoulder before the performance started, I could have swopped places with dd.
"Well she's big too"
DD at 13 is 5 feet 9 and like a stick of rock.

Now I can't do a lot about my height, and wonder if she would have said that if I was size 20.
DD said on the way home the woman should have sat on one of the booster seats they provide.

she didn't mean fat she meant tall - it's incredibly annoying (and totally normal) to be sat behind someone 6ft tall - population is getting taller

I'm practically a midget so always it on the aisle (and it's my responsibility to do so)

she was very rude and you could have retorted with "well sit on the aisle then short stuff" Grin

deaddei · 07/08/2010 17:09

Normally I would do that Laurie, but had the dcs with me. Could just imagine dd exaggerating it to everyone as" mum had a punch up at the SouthBank."
And this woman was older than me and posh Wink

YANBU, how bloody rude Angry

PavlovtheCat · 07/08/2010 17:10

Laurie - does not matter how annoying it is, it is still rude to comment so horribly about it. If it was a problem, she could have asked to swap at any time, not at the end. deadei cannot help her height!

SacharissaCripslock · 07/08/2010 17:11

How rude of her! Shock

I am 4ft 11in so know what it's like to have taller people blocking my view and I might have a wee sigh but I would never say something. I usually end up sitting on my knees and ending up with pins and needles. Grin

sanielle · 07/08/2010 17:12

I'd have told her where to go... How dare she say that to you..but especially to your daughter. I remeber being her height at that age.. I always felt uncomfortable with it :(

Lauriefairycake · 07/08/2010 17:14

Well obviously she was incredibly rude to comment on it Hmm

which is why I said that in my post Pavlov

and I can't help my midget height either (which is also why I said it was my responsibility to buy an aisle seat)

Are you only able to read the first sentence of every post on your computer? Grin

expatinscotland · 07/08/2010 17:16

should have told her to sit at the front next time, and just to tell the booking agent she would like the midget seats :o.

violethill · 07/08/2010 17:18

If you'd had your wits about you, you could've stared around you and commented loudly to your dd 'Did you hear something squeaking down there?'

Very ignorant rude woman

ColdComfortFarm · 07/08/2010 17:18

She's a raving lunatic. There are surprising numbers of them about. I would probably have said, 'It's not my fault you are so short, you nutter', but you are obviously much more polite/tolerant than me!

Most men are around your height, but I bet she would never have dared speak like to a man. Anyway, she's crackers, try not to let it bother you. I think you sound very svelte. I would have thought at your height and 11 stone you were barely a 12.

bronze · 07/08/2010 17:18

tell her she should bring a cushion

(I too grew up very sensitive about my height)

deaddei · 07/08/2010 17:22

(has new best friend in ColdComfortFarm)
I am definitely a size 14.
I was so taken aback, because I thought she was joking at first.
I wish I'd done some outrageous dance moves in my seat now (it was a street dance show). And called her motherfucker.

GypsyMoth · 07/08/2010 17:22

arent seats allocated??

i'm also 6ft....not alot we can do about it deaddei, is there?? i dont wear heels.....but i hope you looked down your nose at her..

deaddei · 07/08/2010 17:23

Anyway I'm off to open the wine. Anyone join me ????

MmeLindt · 07/08/2010 17:28

Was she English?

A lot of Germans muddle "big" and "tall" as both are "gross" in German.

I am 5ft2 and when I get stuck behind someone taller than me sit and huff and puff inwardly. I would never say anything.

Cheeky mare.

PheasantPlucker · 07/08/2010 17:34

deaddei, the woman was incredibly rude. Enjoy your wine, and forget her. Cheers! (Love the image of you calling her a mofo!) :)

Very good point ColdComfort about if she had beena guy and not tall for her gender.. it would have been a non issue! people just want excuse though dont they?...

kickassangel · 07/08/2010 17:58

perhaps theatres should do like the school photographers do - line everyone up by height then make people stand/sit accordingly? then short people like her could sit at the front & look after the little kids, while you sit at the back undisturbed. i'm sure she'd enjoy that.

LynetteScavo · 07/08/2010 18:00

You should have told her to use a kids booster seat. Most Theaters have them.

BuzzingNoise · 07/08/2010 18:03

what a rude woman. She must have been seething all the way through. It's her problem, not yours.

Surely the problem is not that you are 'too big' (by which she clearly meant 'tall') but that she is 'too small'. They should introduce those height restrictors like they have a theme parks. 'Sorry, but if you're not as tall as Coco the Theatre Attendant, you can't come into this theatre'.
