MIL can't have kids to stay on my birthday night because of her 'special plant' !

Grrr.
I am am being unreasonable I think, and so is she. Basically, she offered ages ago to babysit for my birthday. I never go out, had my first drink since xmas in May!

Most of all I was looking forward to the lie in the next day. And I knew I would have a great time out cos I could relax and not worry about having to get up with kids next day (they are 2 and 3, very much early risers).

My own mum had offered to babysit a few months ago, but she lives over an hour away, and MIL only 5 mins I arranged for MIL to do it. She was round earlier today and casually said 'oh I think we'd better do it here, only I've got my plant in the cupboard, and it's so close to being ready be a shame to spoil it now!'

You know what kind of plant I'm talking about right? Anyway, I don't have any moral issues with her doing that. Actually, can't she just lock the cupboard then they can stay over? (that's where I think you lot will say I'm being unreasonable).

But I just feel like it's ruined my birthday. Sad I am probably being over dramatic, but it's so annoyed me.

In fact, thinking about it a bit more, it is in a cupboard in the spare room, she could actually have them sleep in her room!

Oh, now I'm going to get more annoyed about it.

Daftapeth- she does not 'do' mornings, eg. before 2 pm!!! I'm not kidding, she would flat out refuse.

I know it's kind of her to babysit, I don't want to be ungrateful, but seriously, I never go out, and just this once, for my birthday.....oh well

is it a 'special' cupboard?

squeaver · 06/08/2010 18:28

Oh I'm not judging, I can barely remember a good chunk of my student years...

Can't you just say, "I was really looking forward to my lie-in, please lock your plant away and have my kids for the night"

unfitmother · 06/08/2010 18:31

YANBU, do what squeaver suggests.

Well, the dss' are with her now, dp on his way back, so hopefully I can have a chat with him before she drops them off. Then he can have a word with her.

We don't have an 'easy' relationship, so I tend to let him do any other than polite chat to keep the peace.

have a midnight harvest lmao!!

sanielle · 06/08/2010 21:27

OP just a thought, could you afford a hotel for the night? Get mil round to baby sit, and then you and DP go out for night and saves you getting cab home and having to find way back.

redhappy · 06/08/2010 22:24

Oh great idea!

Have just googled, cheapest I could find would be £50 at the travelodge. Since we are literally eating into the food budget to do something for my birthday it's definitely not an option.

But I don't plan on being poor forever and look forward to doing that in a couple of years!

She just doesn't want to do an overnight. I think the plant was just an excuse. If you say about locking the cupboard/having the DCs in her room etc, she'll just try and come up with another reason.

cece · 06/08/2010 23:07

I think you should be grateful she is willing to babysit so you can go out. A lie in would have been nice but isn't essential imo. Surely your DH/DP could get up with the kids if you are that bothered about a lie in?

lemonysweet · 07/08/2010 00:45

sorry, let me just get this straight, your mother in law grows 'plants'?

that is hilarious!

id threaten to shop her as well Grin

ChippingIn · 07/08/2010 01:06

Cool MIL Grin

FFS all she has to do is put something heavy and boring in front of the cupboard - they's hardly teenagers who are going to swipe it!!
