I was a bit Shock when MIL came back from town today with a make up set from Claires accessories for DD1, age 2.3. It has lipstick, lipgloss, eyeshadow and nail varnish. DD was with her when she bought it and very excited about using it so I couldn't confiscate it there and then.

MIL is staying to help out with new baby, so far she's been a great help so I didn't want to say anything to upset her but honestly, would you?? Am I just being old-fashioned? I don't really mind the nail varnish, but the eyeshadow and lipstick is way too much imo!

erk, I wouldn't like this either.

I would throw it out, yes..

SolidGoldBrass · 06/08/2010 15:01

Read the label and check if it is safe for under 3s - if not, put it in a cupboard till she's older. I don't see anything wrong with kids mucking about with toy make up any more than with toy irons/cookers/screwdrivers/mobile phones (my DS loves having his toenails painted).

I think you've either got to get rid of it now or accept it - it would be very mean of you to let her use it while your MIL is there then confiscate it as it would be like a punishment.

MathsMadMummy · 06/08/2010 15:03

2 is a bit young IMO, you could put it away for when she's bigger, I don't think there's anything wrong with playing with it really.

you're not serious about actually throwing it in the bin are you? surely you can give it to charity at least...

SacharissaCripslock · 06/08/2010 15:05

Let her play with it - she'll want to put in on you probably and make you look like a clown. Lots of giggles to be had. Grin

Fibilou · 06/08/2010 15:06

And fwiw I agree with solidbrass, I don't see any more harm in makeup toys re stereotyping than nurses outfits

yama · 06/08/2010 15:07

Actually, it would be my dh who would throw it in the bin.

yama · 06/08/2010 15:07

So, YANBU.

LilRedWG · 06/08/2010 15:08

I'm a bit anal about children and makeup too, tbh, but have no qualms about DD decorating herself and me with facepaints. Go figure. Hmm

BlingLoving · 06/08/2010 15:08

A friend's 28 month old insisted I apply my lip gloss on her. I was a bit uncomfortable, but her mother thought it was quite funny.

I think it's okay. As long as it's seen as a fun thing and nt a sez thing.

PinkyMe · 06/08/2010 15:09

Totally reasonable. I'd do exactly the same thing. Just make sure your 2 yr old doesn't slip up and tell her later.

birdyperson · 06/08/2010 15:09

Actually, what MMM said. Put it away for when she's older.

MillyR · 06/08/2010 15:10

If it has nail varnish in it, then it obviously unsuitable for a young child. Put it away and let her use it when she is old enough to do so safely.

sapphireblue · 06/08/2010 15:10

I wouldn't be happy either and it's not something I'd buy for DD......I wouldn't throw it out however. I guess I'd probably let her play with it at home and hope the novelty wears off quickly so I could accidentally "lose" it Grin

lifeas3plus1 · 06/08/2010 15:13

Oh I'd let her play with it. I mean it's not like your going to let her out the house dressed up to the nine's is it!

Besides, she's 2yrs old once she's dug out the contents the first time to decorate herself, you and your MIL it will be unfit for purpose and can go in the bin Grin

PinkyMe · 06/08/2010 15:17

My dd is 2 (well almost 2). If I gave her makeup she'd just eat it.
She's oblivious to makeup and I'm quite happy for her to stay this way for as long as possible.

tingelingle · 06/08/2010 15:17

See it as a face painting kit, that's how your DD will. Plus she probably already copies you with other things like cleaning and brushing hair....? In her mind, it's no different.

It's not the same as bringing her up to believe she has to wear make up to be pretty etc (pageant style). My DD likes to play with / ruin my make up. Clearly I don't put mascara and lip gloss on her and she certainly doesn't leave the house like this and hope she remains beautifully cherubic and make up free forever.

proudnsad · 06/08/2010 15:31

I think there's a lot of hysteria about this topic, as tinglelingle says it's only dress up/face paint. It's not a sexualising issue if you don't make it one and within the context of the rest of her influences etc.

On t'other hand, my tomboy dd would HATE such a gift and throw it in the bin herself!

Onetoomanycornettos · 06/08/2010 15:38

I've had this gift a few times from the MIL, I just let them play with it at home once or twice, then as someone else said, I bin it on the grounds that it's all messed up (and gunky with hairs in it). I don't allow the children out with make-up on, but see no harm in playing mums at home, given that I do indeed spend 10 min everyday putting my make-up on and they are intrigued by it.

Livingbytheriver · 06/08/2010 15:44

Keep it at the back of the cupboard for another few months?when DD starts using her crayola felt tips as 'lipstick' because she's seen you put yours on you can get the makeup and use it to have some innocent face painting fun!

(I thought the joker was in the house after DD had finished,I only popped out of the room for a moment)

Sanesometimes1 · 06/08/2010 15:44

I actually don't see what the fuss is all about - it;s just a bit of make up to play around with - as some of the others have said it's more than likely she;ll want to put it on you/her dolls/ the walls ! lol, do you allow dress up games at all ? my dd used to love putting on my scaves/neklaces/shoes etc she's 13 now and a perfectly normal kid. Is make-up something that was banned when you were growing up ? perhaps that's why you feel so angry ? who knows, but at the end of the day each to their own. x

prozacfairy · 06/08/2010 15:47

YANBU to not be happy at yourDD using make up even though it's just playing. My DD similar age loves it when I paint her nails and has ruined countless lipglosses by smearing it all over her face to be "just like mummy". I don't mind that but draw the line at any other make up or applying her lipgloss "properly" myself. My DD is also not allowed out with make up on.

SqueezyB · 06/08/2010 15:48

she already opened it so can't give it away as someone suggested...

finally got off my high horse and let her paint my face and hers, i admit it was quite funny, though i still won't be buying her makeup again! I'll let her keep the lipgloss but might 'lose' the rest in the bin while she's asleep.

can't quite explain why there just seems something wrong to me about kids and makeup! i guess i'll have to get used to it with 2 DDs though Confused
