DRUG driving test kits.

This mornings news said the police are experimenting with a "drug testing machine"
at police stations.

I do go to courts, and I knew the charge was "driving under the influence of drink or drugs." But they apparently had no test for the drugs part.
Well, they had in America, so we are copying them (not for the first time)

Well, will this test machine pick up the
legit drugs our doctors give us.?

Barbara Castle did a good job on drink driving. Before some of us were born. cheers.

Er, of course they test for drugs already
A blood test
They don't just guess

expatinscotland · 06/08/2010 11:19

'Legit' drugs that doctors give you that impair your ability to drive are labelled as such. 'DO NOT OPERATE MOTOR VEHICLES WHILST USING THIS DRUG' or some such.

If you chose to do so, then you should be held liable under the law.

Plenty of people are addicted to 'legit' drugs prescribed to them. These drugs are often opiates. They are still controlled substances and can impair a person's ability to drive.

If a person is caught driving whilst using them, they should be prosecuted.

Wouldn't you feel that way if your loved one were killed or injured by a person driving under the influence of such drugs?

LittleSilver · 06/08/2010 12:38

I don't understand your point?

Mowiol · 06/08/2010 12:45

Not sure I understand the point of the post either but yes, they have had tests for various drugs for ages. It's presumably the MACHINE that's new and something the police can do "on-site" and rapidly.

PatriciaHolm · 06/08/2010 14:45

You just don't GET AIBU, do you Gabby? Grin

Oblomov · 06/08/2010 14:56

they know how to test for drugs already. theres that advert where young lad is driving with two or 3 other passengers, boy and girls. and their eyes are kind of popping out.

not sure which drug that is supposed to represent. none of the ones i ever took, i don't think.
Do you look like that on an '2' ?

Oblomov · 06/08/2010 14:57

i meant on an 'e' ?

proudnsad · 06/08/2010 14:57

Quoi?

Is this just a stream of consciousness?

Fibilou · 06/08/2010 15:15

This is what happens when someone is arrested at the moment for s4 RTA:

  1. Brought to custody. Blood sample is taken by forensic nurse practitioner and put in the freezer. Suspect is interviewed
  2. Suspect is bailed for tests on blood. This takes months - so matey boy as able to go back on the streets driving UTI as we have no power to take someone's driving licence off them, only the courts can do that.
  3. We await statement from FSS. Suspect then answers bail (or not, more likely) and is charged depending on the result

A machine in custody would be brilliant and would enable s4 prisoners to be charged, remanded in custody overnight and appear the next day for their first hearing rather than be able to go round driving for months and then fail to appear

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 09/08/2010 22:48

Oblomov-
'not sure which drug that is supposed to represent. none of the ones i ever took, i don't think.
Do you look like that on an e?'

ime ( in distant youth naturally) of staring into nightclub loo mirrors, sadly yes

nowherewoman · 09/08/2010 22:52

Oblomov, I look a bit like that after a couple Grin

nowherewoman · 09/08/2010 22:53

Obviously wouldn't dream of driving in a million years in that condition.

GabbyLoggon · 14/08/2010 12:55

MOWIOL you got it dead right. Its a NEW police machine.

FUTURE? could not they fit up a car so a
flashing light on the roof would activate
if the driver was drunk or drugged? (Dont laugh it may come.)

In the 60s there was an irresponsible attitute to drinking and driving. People who were a bit sozzled said "I drive better"

Few dare say that publicly now. It was a nonsense.

Would you lot welcome a "zero rating" for drivers of cars?

absolutely a zero rating. That way there's no confusion or argument.

Dinkytinky · 14/08/2010 13:16

Of course zero would be best. I don't know what's wrong with people - if you physically must have a drink then I think there's something wrong with you.

Heracles · 15/08/2010 23:38

I thought they just kept the lights flashing when they pulled the car over. If the driver gets out and starts dancing you have him/her bang to rights...
