argh! Toys R Us and their moses baskets!!!

Two years ago we bought a basket for DS from Toys R Us. We're now expecting our second baby so DH went back to the store to buy a replacement mattress.

It would seem he bought the wrong size so I popped back yesterday to swap it for the correct one. Nope! They sell two different types of mattress for the moses basket but they're both the same size ie far too big for our basket.

A lovely girl at customer services agreed with me that it was daft so phoned head office. Apparently head office have recently identified the problem and their solution is to make new baskets to match the size of mattress they're selling Hmm, that's a great help to those of us with baskets already!

Seriously, why do stores do this??!!

and don't get me started on the rude customer..... I had DS with me and given the amount of time we spent at customer services, he was being really good. Yes, I agree, he wasn't right next to me for every second but, I had full sight of him and what he was doing at all times. At most he was 3metres away from me

Anyhow, there was a woman with her husband and daughter looking at the baby stuff near where I was sitting. As she walked off she came over to me and said 'you'll have to watch your own son now because we're leaving'

did she seriously think i was relying on her to keep an eye on my son for me??

The girl on customer services asked me if she'd said what she thought she'd said. Neither of us could quite believe it!

And in case she reads this and recognises herself...shame you didn't see what your daughter was doing with the blankets behind your back

so the moral of the tale is, make sure your child is behaving perfectly before you start questioning the behaviour of others!!!!

Ikea did this with their mattresses/cots, but they had the sense to offer a refund on the 'wrong' size old cot on the purchase of a new size mattress and cot. Toys r us should do the same!! Mothercare do loads of different size mattresses though, you should find something there.

wonka · 05/08/2010 14:33

Have a cuppa sit down..
Did you get your money back for the new matress? Order on line! x

montmartre · 05/08/2010 14:33

John lewis sell the matresses in about 6 different dimensions- that's whrre we got our second one.

Lulumaam · 05/08/2010 14:35

you can get matressess made to measure. also, when i looked at moses baskets , it seemed more cost effective to buy a new basket and matress etc when compared to the cost of just the mattress

stores are entitled to change the dimensions of what they sell over two years. they want to make more money and profits, so they will do what they can to maximise them surely?

i had a cot for DC1 that was discontinued by the time I had DC2 so had to get mattress made to measure on line. it was no more expensive than buying one off the shelf

MrsMiamla · 05/08/2010 14:47

wonka... I got a credit note for the mattress i was returning. thought they would be able to give me my money back but apparently not and I didn't have the energy to argue it.
and genius idea re tea...i've just put the kettle on, fancy joining me?

the girl's suggestion was to buy a new basket but i've already got all the sheets etc for the old size

Lulamaam... i do take your point about they just want to maximise profits but they're still selling the exact same basket that we've got now. So, there are going to be many more people in the same situation as me for years to come.

oneofthosedays... i have indeed now ordered from mothercare but of course to get the free delivery i've had to buy lots of other things including a new changing bag that i really don't need!

Were you ordering online because you haven't got a local Mothercare, or because the local one is too far away to get something like a mattress home? If it's the second, you can take the stuff you didn't really want back to Mothercare, and get a refund voucher.

When I need something bulky from Mothercare, I order other, less bulky stuff that I'd been dithering about, like clothes, and then sometimes I take the other stuff back. (I've kept more than I've taken back, and I always except credit notes, therefore I am not dishonestly taking advantage. 'Kay! gives entitled stare)

terryble · 05/08/2010 15:41

That last bit wasn't supposed to be emboldened.

MrsMiamla · 05/08/2010 21:11

terryble...what a genius idea! i'd never have thought of doing that!! its only really the changing bag that i'm dithering about. there weren't any photos of the inside of it so i feel like i'm buying blind but from the outside photo it looks lovely. but now i don't need to worry if i hate it, so thanks for sharing your cunning plan!

the reason i ordered online is because i couldn't face another shopping trip with a 2yr old DS whilst i'm 37weeks pg! also, i think the mattress i bought was only available online

OP posts:
malteaserpearl · 05/08/2010 21:40

also mrsmania you can order online form your local mothercare and have it delivered into the store for free!

MrsMiamla · 05/08/2010 21:43

really? arse! didn't realise i could do that! at least i know for next time

at the moment the baby and mattress are in a race to see who gets here first...i really hope the mattress wins!!

wonka · 05/08/2010 23:55

MrsMiamia would love to join you for a cuppa.. but with all things imminant, I may leave it a while.. Hope your baby's not needing to sleep in a drawer and the matress gets there soon [family lore has me sleeping in a cardbord box for 3 weeks till my cot arrived]

MrsMiamla · 06/08/2010 08:01

wonka... you're as big a chicken as my friends/family! geez, what do they think i'm going to do? go into labour and leave them looking after DS? as if Wink

wonka · 06/08/2010 08:32

LOL! Grin Some large ass chickens live around you! Ha Ha!

misdee · 06/08/2010 08:36

mattresses dont need to be replaced between siblings do they?

Gibbon · 06/08/2010 08:44

I just replaced mine for DD2 as people scared the life out of me re mattress re use.

Gibbon · 06/08/2010 08:46

Apparently the sky will fall in and the earth will implode and the suchlike.

MrsMiamla · 06/08/2010 09:13

Gibbon, that's exactly what i've been told!

wonka, your webcam's obviously working if you can see them too!

misdee, apparently so. poor DD is getting everything else that her big brother had so we figured a new mattress was the least we could do (esp since there are concerns about reusing mattresses)

OP posts:
Gibbon · 06/08/2010 09:26

Same here MrsM - DD2 should have a T shirt made 'I was born and all I got was this lousy mattress'

MrsMiamla · 06/08/2010 09:35
Smile

i am at least going to applique some pink flowers or something onto her inherited blue babygros. I feel otherwise I"m going to be continually explaining that no, she is a girl but yes she's wearing blue Grin

OP posts:
tethersend · 06/08/2010 09:37

MrsMiamla · 06/08/2010 09:41
