So, feminist organisation The Fawcett Society is taking the government to court to argue that the Emergency budget is effectively illegal because it so disproportionately affects women:

story here

So my question is, why is it just the few campaigners rather than 50% of the population who are up in arms about this? AIBU to think that we all need to pay a bit more attention and rouse a bit more rabble??

(I totally accept my own culpability in this, and would be very grateful for any pointers towards rabble-rousing that I can join in with)

Hmmmm

Having read only the article - I don't think that they are arguing that the budget is illegal because it disproportionately affects women - but that proper process wasn't followed by assessing the proposals for gender impact assessment and that this wasn't made available publicly to allow decisions to be made with all the evidence.

There really isn't enough information here to understand whether the budget will actually disproportinately affect women, and what the cumulative impact of financial and non-financial changes would actually be.

The important thing is not the budget anyway - it will be the full impact of changes to be felt in the spending review. I would have thought more impact could be made by foccusing on ensuring this is taken into account before the announcements in October, rather than dragging Government through court to try to change something which has been announced and is unlikley to change.

Anyway, as far as I am aware it is not illegal to go ahead with policies that disproportinately affect certain groups - I believe the law states that you have to conside the impacts, and consider what you can do to reduce them within the policy, or with other policies you intend to produce.

That being said. I don't disagree with you that being more politically active would be better for all of us. I have never heard of the Fawcett society before - just heading off to have a look now!
