Yes, bring back Buffy.

Shuffles off to find Buffy DVD.

mollycuddles · 04/08/2010 22:44

I love a bit of escapist fantasy but agree totally. The relationship between Bella and Edward is seriously disturbing and not something I would want my dds emulating. You are so NBU.

laweaselmys · 04/08/2010 22:54

I was just going to say True Blood kicks Twilight into sparkley last place.

Although the books also have some pretty dodgy issues with the whole rape, what rape? Thing. At least the girl doesn't go back to being friends with the guy though... ( mentioning no names spuffy fans are mad)

Valpollicella · 04/08/2010 23:00

It's an emotionally disturbing relationship on so many levels. Mortly, jokingly, but also seriously described in my link above.

On a v basic level, I hate the whole premise that a clumsy girl, who doesn't fit in, finally does when she has become 'like him', which is all she can focus on from2nd book on.

She adores him as a God, almost. Whereas pretty much the only reason he 'loves' her is that because she is so tempting...his 'cantante' (her blood 'sings to him')

rosieposey · 04/08/2010 23:12

this: community.sparknotes.com/index.php/2010/07/15/blogging-breaking-dawn-part-4/ Is the funniest thing i have read, my DH found it and this guy HATES Twilight - i cant wait for him to blog the next chapter when they have sex

rosieposey · 04/08/2010 23:13

I meant the guy who wrote that blog for all the books hates Twilight (mind you so does DH).

pointydog · 04/08/2010 23:14

it's a teen thang. I don't see why adults are bothered. In the same way that I don't see why adults are bothered about potter.

NeverPushWhenItSaysPull · 04/08/2010 23:14

Actually, that's another good reason to read the books/watch the films. You can really appreciate all the Twilight parodies

For those of you who've seen the film, may I present the musings of Cleolinda Jones

Valpollicella · 04/08/2010 23:19

Pointy, I know it was jokey but my link above kinda had some pertinent points about what teen girls get reinforcement about in RL

pointydog · 04/08/2010 23:24

There are lots of stories that reinforce a rather negative relationship between men and women. Vampires are often portrayed as dominant and incredibly sexual creatures. That is one of the main reasons twilight is so appealing to teen girls, I get that.

However, I feel confident my dd will not be adversely influenced by twilight as we talk about lods of things.

Valpollicella · 04/08/2010 23:31

No matter how much people tak though Pointy, it's not necessarily going to affect completely how someone reacts to something..

Ie I could tell DS at length that Matisse's Snail was rubbish..he may have a diff POV (I know arts and relationships not really comprable...best example I can thing of right now of free thinking!)

NeverPushWhenItSaysPull · 04/08/2010 23:37

Do teenagers not study Romeo & Juliet any more? Is there a link between reading about the suicide of the characters and people taking their own lives? Should we censor all books that portray negative relationships?

I think the bigger issue is that Stephenie Meyer is a terrible author and we should be discouraging impressionable minds from reading such turgid shite.

pointydog · 04/08/2010 23:47

of course dd will have her own opinion and will be influenced to some extent, completely independently of me or anyone else. I am aware of the issues but I am not going to spoil the enjoymemnt she gets from the story.

And I know it is poorly written. So are most of the Potters and she loved them too. We have also had the odd conversation about Rowling's writing. But how pompous it must sound for a parent to bang on about the poor quality of Meyer's/Rowling's writing to a child who just loves the stories. How very irritating.

SlartyBartFast · 04/08/2010 23:49

i wouldnt read the books, but the films, grr, and anyway, i dont think its pompous, i am sure dd prefers it that i hate her taste in films... being a teen and that. rather than enthuse about twilight with her

OP posts:
pointydog · 04/08/2010 23:51

I don;t enthuse with her (I am not a teen) and I don't slag it off. There are other ways that I am much happier with.

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/08/2010 23:54

YANBU.

fucking hate hate hate it. maudlin warped seedy pathetic crap!

give me buffy anyday! i like girls in love with vampire types to kick ass, not mope about for england, looking insolent and pouty

makes me mad!

Valpollicella · 05/08/2010 00:02

And if you want to get highly judgemental...

All Bella wants is to be the same as Edward.

She doesn't want want kind of career, or to be a mother. No She just wants to be the same as her husband, because she's so infallible as a human?

Errrr

Lots of us manage it

Valpollicella · 05/08/2010 00:07

As in lots of us can be judgemental

Sparkleplenty2308 · 05/08/2010 00:15

I really enjoyed the books (as long as I ignored the whole bullying boyfriend thing , but the first film was absolutely dreadful, just unbelievably slow/dull. Really don't understand the hysteria around them, completely over my head.

midlandsmumof4 · 05/08/2010 00:19

have watched the first film & read the book . Read the second book but not seen the film . Very full of teen angst-lots of wanting but no doing & very badly & boringly done. Think the only redeeming feature filmwise are the male leads-Edward & Jacob providing they float your boat .

Mamumu · 05/08/2010 00:21

Twilight makes Anne Rice seem like Tolstoi in comparison.

SolidGoldBrass · 05/08/2010 00:42

I just had a bit of a pop at one of my friends for reading 'lame misogynist shit'.

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 05/08/2010 00:48

Lucy Mangan on Twilight (apologies if someone linked to that already; I didn't see a link).

SolidGoldBrass · 05/08/2010 01:47

What annoys me the most is that there is so much better vampire smut out there. Up until Laurell Hamilton went completely cuckoo, the Anita Blake novels were great fun, with a smart-talking and tough female narrator (sample line: 'I don't date vampires. I kill them.'). Kelley Armstrong's books are also full of assertive, interesting, clearly-defined heroines. Charlaine Harris is a far better writer and, again, has better characters (disclaimer, have only read the first Sookie Stackhouse book, though have just discovered her other paranormal series, the 'Grave' books, which I like even better). Even the rather naff and cheesy Christine Warren has her female characters take the piss out of the over-protective and too-macho males.
I'm a little with Lucy Mangan here - adults encouraged young girls to read the Twilight books because they're all about not having sex and overlooked the vile misogyny (women must erase their personalities and sacrifice everything, even their lives, to please and appease their beloveds; abusive stalkers are the most desirable partners in the world).
