Leisure centre offerings :

  1. Facilities aimed at helping people of all ages to get fit and to enjoy exercise - check.
  2. Weight management advice and plans - check.
  3. Healthy eating advice - check.
  4. A cheap short-cut to giving yourself skin cancer - check. wtf?

YANBU - totally reprehensible.

However, I do think that the privatisation/ out-sourcing of local sports centres has had lots of negative effects.

When I was a kid your local sports centre was full of activities like basketball, badminton, trampolining etc. Now, the majority of them have a weights gym, and an aerobics room (plus swimming).

The focus is entirely on looking good and living longer, which is fine for adults but wholly inappropriate concerns for children, who should be learning to enjoy using their bodies.

worse than this a couple of years ago I wanted go use the sunbeds at my local leisure centre to get brown before a holiday (stupid I know).

As part of their health and safety records I had to complete an assessment form about my skin type and how I normally tan. I have very pale skin, lots of moles and burn easily so of course the assessment advised that I absolutely shouldn't use sunbeds.

When I returned the form the receptionist said "oh I wouldn't worry about that" and filled in another form for me for their records with made up answers so I could use the sunbed.

I declined to use the sunbed in the end (I'm stupid but not that stupid) but remember being shocked that the centre was so happy putting profit before safety.
