I am trying to shift a piano into the other room and one castor is stuck solid and it's just too heavy for me.

I am so annoyed. I hate it when this happens. I hate being so weedy. And I know that if I keep trying and use every ounce of my strength I will only manage to get it right in front of the front door, and there it will get stuck fast and we won't be able to leave the house (have not forgotten the sofa 8 years ago )

So AIBU to hope some unsuspecting man knocks at the door so I can ask him to help me with it?

If he had a can of WD40 as well I would be in seventh heaven.

Thought this would be a dirty thread. And we would all recomend toys.

I can't help on the moving pianos front.

BalloonSlayer · 03/08/2010 15:03

Toys might help actually. If DS had a skateboard I might be able to put it on that.

Oh bugger. I was doing so well too.

How old is DS? Can't he do a little lifting? (assuming he's not 6).If all else fails go next door. I would. I am always loaning my husband next door.

BalloonSlayer · 03/08/2010 15:14

He is ten but not at all brawny, blessim. And I can only move it a bit using all my mighty muscles.

DH will help me when he gets home. But I wanted it to be done to surprise him. And also so he couldn't say "What do you want to move that for?"

I have already emptied, moved, and re-filled two big bookcases so was feeling flushed with success.

< clutches back and groans >

very disappointed. was all prepared to post a link to Ann Summers...........

tokyonambu · 03/08/2010 15:39

Do you mean the castor is stuck as in the wheel won't turn on the spindle or the whole unit won't swivel? As opposed to having fallen down a crack in the floor of something?

If it moves, and shouldn't: Araldite. If it doesn't move, and should: WD40. With the pack of the former (not the heretical "rapid" and "instant" nonsense, proper 24-hour Araldite) and a spray can of the latter (do not lose the little red straw) you can be as manly as you want.

BeenBeta · 03/08/2010 15:46

Following on from tokyonambu we have some heavy furnture and shifting it on castors sometimes means getting down on hands and knees and manually turning the castors so they are all pointing in the right direction before shoving.

If the castor is turned sideways againts the direction of travel you will be struggling.

BreevandercampLGJ · 03/08/2010 15:46

Metal jam jar lids under castors make them easier to shift.

What fab ideas. Thank you.

Am off to the industrial estate in a moment so will buy some WD40.

A large HGV delivering something pulled up outside my neighbours' house half an hour ago. I gave the men a long appraising stare, but decided not to ask them to help me.

"Am off to the industrial estate in a moment so will buy some WD40."

I love the smell of WD40 in the morning...it smells of victory.

And, seriously: Araldite. If you have any truck with lesser adhesives, improve your life with epoxy resin.

BeenBeta · 03/08/2010 15:59

As an aside a good squirt of WD40 in the air intake of any vehicle on a cold day while the engine is turning will also guarantee a start.

tokyonambu · 03/08/2010 16:02

And WD40 on the plug leads if it's damp, too.

Poledra · 03/08/2010 16:02

tokyonambu, you sound like a woman who Knows Her Glues - what should I use to stick a plastic flower back on the plastic strap of DD2's flip-flops? DH muttered something about epoxy resin not being the material for the job, but has not yet done anything about the right materials, so I'm making like the Little Red Hen..........

tokyonambu · 03/08/2010 16:10

Evostick.

BeenBeta · 03/08/2010 18:33

WD40 also good for getting those infernally sticky labels of household goods. Also good for spraying under your freezer if it is in an outside garage to stop it going rusty underneath.

I like WD40.

BeenBeta · 03/08/2010 18:35

Tip for not losing the little red straw is to put a postmans rubber band round the can and stick the straw under it while out of use.

tokyonambu · 03/08/2010 19:27

WD40 also works quite well at shifting chewing gum off shoes.

BeenBeta · 03/08/2010 19:31
BalloonSlayer · 03/08/2010 21:49

Ah no I am not.

DH rode in as my knight in shining armour and with liberal applications of WD40 and much huffing and puffing we managed to get the job done to my satisfaction.

The piano did let out one outraged plink as it went over the metal strip between rooms but seems unscathed.

I'm impressed pianos are really heavy
