To think the Job Centre should have told me this months ago

Been on Jsa almost 9 months now, Lone parent and was on Income Support before that,
Applied for loads of jobs but rarely even got a thanks but no thanks, constant hassle from the Job Centre to find work, Havn't worked since I had my first child 18 years ago as been home with my kids so mainly applied for shop work as not qualified for anything else.
Anyway I was invited for an interview in a well known bakers, had interview yesterday, Seemed to go really well, they needed to see my birth cert or my passport and be given photocopies, My passport is 2 years out of date {didnt bother renewing it as cant afford to go abroad anymore},So took both just in case.
My birth Cert is the original but not the full one with parents name's and occupation etc.
Was intervied by the area manager who was happy with it all, she even rang me a few hours later so I could check bus times to find out the earliest I could get there in the mornings,
Well anyway, had call from their personell today to tell me my id wasn't sufficient, she is waiting to hear back from head office to see if they can accept it,
She said only a full Birth Cert or valid passport was acceptable now under new rules,
I just think the Job Centre should have told me this when I first signed on, I would have tried to sort out better id then and not be in the situation now when I may miss out on getting work cos I wasnt aware of this,

Yeah they could well be unaware, I was mainly mentioning them to make the point that anyone could've told you, not just the JC. I completely appreciate what you're saying, DGMW, so if you feel strongly enough about it, I would say something next time you go in there. It would make you feel better and maybe would even help someone else .

Thanks for your comments Lucy I really do appreciate them, as for all comments, I'm taking them all onboard.
Not due in there for another fornight as signed on today, came home to a message to call company personell, My daughter texted me whilst I was at the Jc to say they had called and I had to call back when I got home, if I had known then what I know now I would have asked the very nice lady who did my signing if in future people who had not worked for a long time could be made aware of the changes,
{by the way she was really nice and said she hoped she would see me in the said bakers as that was where all the Jc staff went to get their lunch,} 2 minutes from Jc.

I have quite a few family members nearby but I guess if they were aware of this just didnt think it would affect me, I don't know.

Hi ya
Have you heard any more about the job?

alfiethekittycat · 15/08/2010 01:01

Hi ya chippingin Sorry only just seen your comment,

I didn't get the job, Got a call a few days after to say that they were sorry but my ID wasn't sufficient, but I could apply again when I had it sorted. I got the impression from the phone call that had my ID been ok I would have been offered it.

I've applied online for a full birth cert, had to wait till my sis came back from holiday as my bank card doesnt allow me to pay online yet, much cheaper than a renewed passport, They have readvertised the job so I will apply again if its still on the website when I get the birth cert, hopefully by tuesday,

How blooming annoying for you alfie, I hope the birth cert comes in time as you stand a great chance of getting that job if it was only the id that was the prob.
Good luck!

How annoying for you!

Just been through the same thing at interview yesterday for M&S store which was held in JOBCENTRE 10 miles away.

Got up at 6am, got my child to school, travelled 10 miles (cost £5.00), arrived 30 mins early (interview at 10:30) all prepared had my long birth certificate and passport to hand.

"The very nice interviewer said "Oh you haven't got your proof of address or a passport sized photograph!!".......she said she would give me time to get one so I ran to my bank got required info, ran to photo booth cost £5.00 got required photo, ran back excited but sweating - but hey I want this job....

Brilliant the interviewer said, "but oh you haven't got proof of your National Insurance number!!!!", but we are here in the JOBCENTRE where they have all records!, I said!! "No you go home (10 miles again on the bus), get a JOBCENTRE letter and come back for 2:30pm and I'll fit you in then as your a very nice lady"!!!

No I have to pick my son up at 3:00pm as you can't just leave 10yr olds standing in the street 10 miles away, unless you want to get locked up I thought.............Talk about stress -this was inbetween explaining that the other applicants had'nt even turned up for their interview!!!, talk about stress, when I picked up my son and he asked if I had got the job I did'nt know where to start to explain what happened.........;oP

So how does that work if you have no idea where your birth was registered, and when you ask your mum the best she can come up with is 'London?'. How on Earth am I meant to get a birth certificate? I don't have a passport because I've a) never been abroad and b) haven't had a birth certificate to get one with. I don't have a driving license because I have epilepsy. How on earth would I ever be able to prove my identity?

I'm surprised some adults don't have copies of their birth certificates.
My parents gave me mine when I left home age 18 to go to university.
I thought all parents got a copy of the full cert and had the option of an additional limited cert when they registered the birth.
The only advantage of the last governments identity scheme was that it would make proving your identity easier to people who don't travel much.
