to want to return this to M&S food?

I bought a tub of guacamole, at about 5pm on Saturday. Got it out of the fridge today to have for supper, and saw the use by date was 31 July (Saturday). So I'd have had to eat it within a few hours of buying it to be within the 'use by' limit.

It wasn't marked down. I know M&S are quite bad with short date-life, and I usually check but I was in a hurry. And I'm more peeved because I almost didn't get it as I remember thinking it was quite pricey (around £3 I think).

AIBU to be thinking about taking it back for a refund? Just seems a bit bad to be selling things, at full price, with such a short shelf-life. More of a WWYD, really.

I wouldn't take it back

sanielle · 02/08/2010 19:01

If you have a receipt go for it. I never haver receipts.....

Stinkyfeet · 02/08/2010 19:02

No, I wouldn't take it back. I'd eat it today quite happily!

compo · 02/08/2010 19:03

It's most likely fine to eat though
have you smelt it?

wonderingwondering · 02/08/2010 19:06

Hmmm. No receipt. Looks a bit watery around the edge, so not sure about eating it.

Take it back for sure!!!

Rockbird · 02/08/2010 19:41

Friend took back a half eaten box of blueberries with no receipt because there was a mahoosive spider in the box. They refunded no problem.

ChippingIn · 02/08/2010 19:44

I don't see how you can jusfy taking it back. It had a 'Use by' date on it, it was still within date when you bought it - so your look out really.

However, I do sympathise! Sainsbury's is crap at rotating stock and you know that - you tend to expect more from M&S.

I'm also not a stickler for use by dates, so I'd go by look, smell, taste...

thisisyesterday · 02/08/2010 19:44

when you bought it it was within date.

not their fault you left it/didn';t check it

that said, they probably will refund if you do take it back

Jasonthunderpants · 02/08/2010 19:45

If its a bit watery just give it a good stir
What was the sell by date?
are most sell by dates earlier than the use by date?

thisisyesterday · 02/08/2010 19:48

sell by is sometimes the same as use by

MadameBelle · 02/08/2010 19:48

What can go wrong with guacamole in a couple of days after its sell-by? If it hasn't been opened, it will have been packaged in a protective environment.

I will wager anything you like that it is safe to eat. It's not like it's fish or meat or something.

Whether M and S should have had it marked down or not is a different issue, but I wouldn't take it back. Just check more carefully next time.

Jasonthunderpants · 02/08/2010 19:54

most things last longer than the dates on them. I have had natural yogourt 10 days after the use by date
I have got a packet of crosse and blackwell cook in the pot cassorole mix (turkey) in the cupboard that is bb 25 April 1992
I wont use it thought. It is just a party piece for when we have guests

CindersIsNotApoet · 02/08/2010 19:58

maybe the turkey
will go up in a puff of smoke one day..

Itsjustafleshwound · 02/08/2010 20:03

It doesn't contain any dairy or meat and has been sealed, so I think it would be okay to eat (also M&S are generous with their sell by/et by dates)

I wouldn't think there was much wrong with it, but if you are unhasppy with it, I would take it back and see what is said ...

NoahAndTheWhale · 02/08/2010 20:09

I'd use it. But I often don't really look at use by dates and rely on smelling it.

I did take back mozzarella I bought from Morrisons that was well beyond its use by date and stank.

LucyLouLou · 02/08/2010 20:18

I would take it back because you will probably get a refund, they don't tend to argue over things like this. That said, if they did say 'no', you don't really have a leg to stand on. Technically, there is no issue here. I don't think they will say 'no' though....

withorwithoutyou · 02/08/2010 20:21

I took back some fishcakes they sold me which were a day out of date when they sold them.

They didn't seem to care much.

But when I took back a corked bottle of wine they refunded me and gave me a replacement.

Weird.

wonderingwondering · 02/08/2010 20:29

Having eaten (alternative supper) I feel less irritable and less inclined to march up the road demanding to see the manager! But I do think it is bad form in a relatively expensive shop. I might mention it next time I'm in there.

I know it's not illegal, just poor customer service, I think.
